December 19, 2001, in Ottawa, of cancer, age 47. Born in Collingwood, Barb grew up near Stayner, then obtained a BA in Honours French from UBC and an MA in Translation from the University of Montreal before working as a language instructor. She next joined the Canadian Forces as a Logistics officer, serving at sea and ashore, and obtained an MBA from Dalhousie University before moving to Ottawa and earning a PLog designation. Predeceased by parents Eric and Mollie, she is survived by her husband Lawrence Surges, sisters Pat and Jennie, and brothers Chris and Tim. Thanks to the extended families, medical personnel, and friends near and far who were so caring and supportive these last three years. "Family" matters. A memorial service was held at a military chapel December 21st to celebrate Barb's life. Charitable as always, she gave of herself and asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Arthritis Society. The Ottawa Citizen, 16-01-2002
