Josephine Houk-Mason (née Dyment), died at the Timmins and District Hospital on Dec. 13, 2002. She was 97 years old. Mrs. Houk-Mason was a piano teacher for over 75 years, and the director of many choirs. She was the president of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association in Brantford and the president of the Kiwanis Music Festival in Brantford. Josephine won many trophies for ballroom dancing, which she began at the age of 80. She also won medals for running in competitions at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Madison Square Gardens in New York City and the 1925 British Empire Games in London, England. Mrs. Houk-Mason also held the record of 11 seconds for the 100 yard dash for over 50 years. Mrs. Houk-Mason was predeceased by her husbands Herbert Mason and Wesley Houk, brothers Albert, Nathaniel and Harvey and sisters Amy Payne, Meta Spitler and Carrie Lee. She is survived by her son Gerald Mason of Hamilton and daughter Barbara (Andy) Boudreau of Timmins. Also surviving are grandchildren Heather Quevillon of North York and Sue Perkins of Michigan. A memorial service will be held in Brantford at Beckett Glaves Funeral Home on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the St. George Cemetery in St. George
