A traditional native funeral service for Constance Lake elder Mary (nee Sagutch) Longpeter, 89, was held Nov. 21-23, 2002 at Constance Lake's community complex. She died Nov. 19 at Notre-Dame Hospital from a lengthy illness. Her death occurred hours after that of her granddaughter Sandra Mattinas from a highway accident, so that the traditional service was held for both. Born June 30, 1913 in Attawapiskat, she lived most of her life in Cochrane before moving to Thunder Bay and then Constance Lake earlier this year. She was predeceased by her husband John Longpeter in Cochrane, parents Janet and John Sagutch of the James Bay coast, young sons Xavier, Gregorie and Eli Longpeter, a daughter Phemi Longpeter of Moosonee, sisters Maggie, Angela and Madeline, and a grandson Charles Sackaney of Cochrane. She leaves her daughters Jean Sackaney of Cochrane and Rita Mattinas of Constance Lake, as well 20 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
