Funeral services for longtime Hearst forestry technician Sergio Alfredo Perin, 58, of Boucher St. are to be held today, (Oct. 23). He died at home, Oct. 18, following a year-long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) since last year. Born Aug. 14, 1944 in Cordenons, Italy, he came to Fort Frances in 1949. A 1969 graduate Lakehead University's forestry program, he was a Hearst Ministry of Natural Resources forestry technician until his retirement in 1997. He then did forestry consulting work until 2001. An avid angler and hunter, he particularly enjoyed the hunting camp built in Split Rock with his father. Predeceased by his mother Dina Perin of Ft Frances in September 2001, he leaves his wife Marguerite (née Turbide) Perin of Hearst, his father Enrico Perin of Ft Frances, and sons Stefen of Toronto and Richard Perin of Hearst. Also surviving are his brother Alberto (Donna) Perin of Winnipeg, and two nephews. Rev. Jean-Marc Pelletier is to officiate today's service at 10:30 a.m. at Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral. Interment will be at the Monsignor Grenier Cemetery. Funeral director is the Salon Lafrance Funeral Home. A luncheon is to follow at the Église St-Pie X Church. In addition, a memorial service will be held, Oct. 26, in Ft Frances.
