John William DRUHAN

John William Druhan HALIFAX, NS - John William 89, passed away peacefully in QEH Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, September 17, 2002. Born in Westville, NS, he was the son of Patrick J. and Catherine M. (Chisholm) Druhan. He received his early education in Westville. At the age of 16 he qualified as a telegrapher for the C.N.R. During his early railway career, he worked as a trainman in New Glasgow, Truro and Sydney as well as Winnipeg, Jasper and Edmonton. In 1931 he enlisted with the Pictou Highlanders and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant when the Pictou Highlanders were mobilized for active service. He attended Royal Military College, Kingston and volunteered for Canloan Service with the British Seaforth Highlanders. Capt. Druhan served with distinction as a Canloan officer until discharge in 1945 having been severely wounded during service. He returned to the C.N.R. in 1946 as a brakeman in Pictou, then Stellarton, then as trainmaster in Stellarton. He was appointed asst. superintendent with CN in Moncton and then Fredericton and then superintendent of operations in Halifax and eventually superintendent in Moncton. He was seconded from C.N.R. in 1970 to serve in Kenya, Swaziland and Ghana as an operational advisor and consultant through C.I.D.A. He married Evangeline (Vange) Chisholm of Mulgrave, NS, 1940, who accompanied him on all postings and travels and who passed away June, 1994 after 54 years of a devoted marriage. He is survived by his daughters, Joan and husband William Curry, Halifax, NS, Karen and husband David McBeath, Victoria, BC, Mary Catherine (Kay) and husband Andrew Crawford, Stouffville, ON and Genevieve (Gene) and husband Tony Sabatino, Oakville, ON. He will be fondly remembered as "Keeper" by 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. May Shepard, New Glasgow, NS, Mercedes, Mrs. Edward O'Reilly, Hopewell, NS and Mrs. Isabel Ingarfield, Halifax, NS and brother Jerome and wife Inga, Que. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Evangeline Chisholm and a son Kenneth (in infancy); a sister Kay, Mrs. Larry Herzog, Everett, Wash, USA; brothers, James and Lonnie of Westville, NS, also two brothers and a sister in infancy. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Snows Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Visitation hours from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on September 20, 2002. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., September 21, 2002 in the Parish Church, St. Pius X, Halifax, NS., Rev. Father Albert Cosgrove officiating. Interment to follow in the Holy Name Church Cemetery, Westville, NS at 2:30 p.m., September 21, 2002, Rev. Father Donald Boudreau officiating. No flowers by request.
