AITKEN, Jean (nee Rose) 1913-2002 Jean Aitken passed away on to the other side on Monday, May 20th, 2002 at the Marycrest Home for the Aged in Peterborough, Ontario. She was in her 89th year. Jeanie Rose was born in 1913 in Peterborough, the daughter of Reverend Wes and Annie Rose. Her mother was a descendant of the Irish immigrants who first settled in the Peterborough area in 1825. In 1939 she married Bill Aitken and moved to Toronto and latterly to Port Credit in Mississauga where she worked as a store clerk, pharmacist’s assistant and Registered Nurse’s Aid. She was active in the Eastern Star, the Home and School Association and as a tireless worker for many Progressive Conservative candidates in the provincial and federal elections. She was a gifted seamstress and a member of the United Church of Canada. In 1976 she moved back to Peterborough when her husband retired and continued to be active in many church and social service organizations. She was strong-willed and hardworking and pushed her husband Bill through an honour’s programme in history at Trent University. He became Trent’s oldest graduate at age 74 in 1986. Jean is survived by her son the Reverend Dr. Brian Aitken of Sudbury, daughter Dr. Wendy Scott of Oakville, grandchildren Sheila Aitken of Toronto and Adam Scott of Oakville, and niece Betty McHale of Georgetown Ontario. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s United Church, Walford Rd. on Tuesday, May 28th at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations will be used to create the Jean Aitken Memorial Banner honouring the work of women in the church.
