TIKKANEN, Helen Lahja (Lehto) In loving memory of Helen Lahja (Lehto) Tikkanen, 89 years, of Sudbury, who passed away Thursday morning, July 4th, 2002 at the Extendicare-York. Born in Toronto, ON where she enjoyed her early years, Helen moved to Beaver Lake where her family took up farming. There she met Eino whom she married in 1930. They took over operation of the farm in the 1940’s when ill health beset her father Carl. They continued until the early 1950’s by which time Eino had returned to mining with INCO. A devoted daughter, wife and mother, Helen provided home care for several years to her ailing mother, Vilma while raising her boys. Although life was especially demanding in those times, Helen was active in her community and participated in amateur theatre, rhythmic gymnastics and bowling all of which provided her with many good memories. In their later years she and Eino, on their respective snow machines, could be seen scooting off to Penage or Elbow Lake to get some fresh fish for supper. Eino would often remark as to how hard he had to lean on that throttle to keep up with Helen out there on the lake. A loving and cheerful soul, Helen will be remembered for her ready smile whether it was for family, friends or a stranger. Beloved wife of Eino Tikkanen predeceased 1999. Loving mother of Paul (wife Viola) of Newmarket, and Ken (wife Nancy) of Langley, B.C. Cherished grandmother of Karen, Leila, Jeffrey and Lisa; great grandchildren Emily, Alison and Susanne; step-great-grandchildren Shane, Jenine and Chayce. Dear sister of Irma predeceased. Special thank you to the Extendicare-York Staff for all their excellent care and help. At Helen’s request there will be no visitation; no service; cremation. A private family committal service will take place at Beaver Lake Cemetery at a future date. Donations to the Alzheimer Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
