JAMES, Florence Elaine (Nee Dickson) In loving memory of Florence Elaine James (nee Dickson), 96 years, Saturday evening, July 27th, 2002 at the Extendicare - York, Sudbury. Beloved wife of Wm. John James (predeceased 1966), dear mother and friend of John Airth (wife Pat) of Whitefish and Patricia Kaireen Morrison (husband John of Wawa). Proud and loving grandmother of Kent James, Laurie James (husband Ed Mathewson), Johanna Rowe (husband Sam) and Matthew Morrison (wife Annette). Big Grandma to Nicholas James, Katie and Aidan Mathewson. Eldest and loving sister of Donald Dickson and Patricia Sancartier both of Sudbury, and predeceased by brothers Jim, Stuart, Douglas, and Robert Dickson. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and by former staff members at Adamsdale Public School for whom she had special affection. Daughter of John Lent Dickson and Patricia Florence Orr, Florence Elaine Dickson was born June 8, 1906 in Cache Bay, Ontario, moving to Larchwood in 1915 where her father was partner in the Haight and Dickson lumber mill. Educated in Larchwood and Sudbury, Florence became a teacher after attending North Bay Normal School, her first schools being rural ones in Spring Creek in 1924, and nearby Loring from 1926-1928. Following that she taught for seven years at the old Central Public School in Sudbury, located where the Sudbury Arena now stands. Florence was an athlete, excelling at softball, basketball, and paddling throughout her younger years, and a life-long artist and musician. Her marriage to William John (Jack) James took place in April 1935 at St. Andrew’s United Church on Larch Street and her teaching was curtailed until Sept. 1941 when war shortages allowed her to teach at McKim #6 in Minnow Lake (later Welland S. Gemmell) until 1947. In 1950 she became principal at Neelon #3A (presently Adamsdale Public School) where she remained until retirement in 1965. An original member and long-time supporter of St. Luke’s United Church on Bancroft Drive, Florence served as choir director for a number of years and assisted in other duties to the best of her ability. Her husband died in 1966 after which she sold their Ramsey Lake property and moved to St. Andrew’s Place where she lived for several years until the Westmount Retirement Home became available. Her final years were spent at Extendicare York graciously engaging all she met. She was a treasure. Resting at the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch St., Sudbury. Funeral Service in the R.J. Barnard Chapel on Wednesday, July 31st, 2002 at 2 p.m. Interment in the Parklawn Cemetery. Donations to St. Luke’s United Church Memorial Fund or the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated. (Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday or after 1 p.m. Wednesday.) 7/31/2002- ID655407 - Sudbury Star
