WEGLO, John Karl Born: October 23, 1924 Died: August 09, 2002 Ending this unique life experience and his courageous struggle at the end, John Weglo Sr. passed away on August 9, 2002 in Sudbury, Ontario. John was born in Elm Creek, Manitoba on October 23, 1924. His father was Adolph Carl Weglo who was born in Trondhiem Norway and became a naturalized Citizen in 1913 and his mother was Esther Staker born in Whitehaven, England. John met and married Dorothy Jean Clendenning on August 8, 1945. John’s father Adolph a carpenter by trade helped build their first home, a log cabin, which they hewed from logs from the bush. John and Dorothy moved to Falconbridge Ontario in 1953 where they lived most of their life until Dorothy Jean passed away in 1988. John was brought up with his three siblings, Martha, Dick and Eddie Weglo and spent a lot of time growing up in the Weglo Homestead near Bissett Manitoba, a gold mining area. Only John’s brother Eddie and his wife Kay Weglo of Ottawa are living. He also has his brother in law Ris Keregeris, of Winnipeg and Frank Brisbin, and wife Sue Scottinwood of Toronto, sisters in laws, Dorothy Weglo of Vancouver and Dorothy Clendenning of Edmonton. John’s remaining Norwegian family grew from Uncle Sigard a brother of his father and stepmother who was born the day John’s Father set sail to come to Canada. In looking at work opportunities, after having worked as a labourer in the mining mills, John went back to UBC and graduated as a Metallurgical Engineer. That path took him to Falconbridge Nickel Mines where he worked in management of the milling / flotation operation, mill construction & design, smelter operation, management of surface operations and finally as Director of Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety. In this area he grew an industry around doing things that make sense for business, for people and for global conservation, John was ahead of his time in this thinking so he was instrumental in providing needed input and direction for governmental policies and procedures when they finally caught up to his thinking. All of this was done in John’s own pioneering, proven and inimitable style. John lived a full life probing & exploring at many varying and diverse occupations. He was successful in the multiple fields of Engineering, Supervising, Finance, Management, Environmental/ Medical, New Age Health, Metaphysical Studies of Yogi’s & other cultures. Although starting from humble beginnings, believing there is no such word as "can’t", he progressed beyond his expectations in creating the world around him yet was still comfortable with the workingman. He was a man of action who liked to help and improve things and in doing so spent many of his years in the service of others. That was his way of giving love, as a service in doing things for others. He excelled in anything he set his mind to an as he transitioned from management to environmental, he threw himself into many community venues in the area of Health in the service of his community, which included, ¥ Board of Directors of Sudbury General Hospital 1975-1989 ¥ Co-Founder, Chairman, Board of Directors The Northern Recovery Home for Women 1974-1986 ¥ Chairman of Sudbury Branch of Directors of St. John’s Ambulance 1976-1983 ¥ Chairman of Training & Honorary Chairman St. John’s Ambulance 1984-1992 ¥ Past Chairman of Sudbury District Victorian Order of Nurses & Board of Directors 1970-1975 Awards that John received: ¥ 1977 from St. John Ambulance, Serving Brother ¥ 1981 from St. John Ambulance, Officer of St. John ¥ 1989 from St. John Ambulance, Commander of St. John He is survived by his children, John Weglo and Susan Chevalier. Their families include John’s wife Maria, grandson, Alexander Jasen, and granddaughter Kylie Jean Weglo. It also includes Susan’s spouse Graham Scrimgeour, granddaughter Jenna Brooke Chevalier, granddaughter Stacie Alexis Chevalier and Darryn and Krista Scrimgeour. John had many long term friends, but in the later years Bill and Irene Morrison have been John and Dorothy’s fabulous friends for 50 years. He was loved and will be missed but his life spirit will be carried on in the organizations, memories and actions of those who knew him. A Celebration of his life will be held at JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL CHAPEL on Monday August 19, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. and every one is welcome to join the family afterward for refreshments, John will be cremated and buried in a private family ceremony beside his wife Dorothy Jean in a plot in Sudbury.
