Dr. At his winter residence in Sarasota, Florida on January 9, 2002 at 79 years of age. Beloved husband of Eileen M. Mitchell. Dear father of Scott (Vera), Stephen (Carol) of Ottawa and Mary Deborah (Jean-Noel Pouget) of Cabestany, France. Loving grandfather of Chelsea and Courtney of Ottawa and Manel, Lucain and Bastian of Cabestany, France. Dear brother of Robert Gonyer, June McFall and Effie DeFasio of Ottawa. Son of the late Frank L. Willis and Mabel MacLeod. Dr. Willis served in the Royal Canadian Navy on Atlantic convoys in WWII, and in peace time as Lieutenant Commander (Reserves). Earned degrees from the universities of Ottawa, Western, Toronto, Harvard, with post graduate studies at McGill. Taught high school in Toronto, Lakehead, and in Ottawa at Fisher Park, Commerce, Vice Principal at Ottawa Tech and Principal at Glebe. Superintendent and Director of Education for the Ottawa Board of Education. Served on Board of Governors at Carleton University and at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Founding secretary of the Harvard University Club of Ottawa. Founding president of Ottawa chapter, and elected Fellow of the Canadian College of Teachers. Author of numerous publications. Taught at Western, Carleton and Bishop's universities. Retired from the University of Ottawa as Associate Professor. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday after 11:30 a.m. until a service to Celebrate Hal's life in the Chapel at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the West Chapel Lounge.
