Peacefully at 72 years on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 of complications arising out of her valiant battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family - husband Russell Smith, daughter Terry Fenton (Gordon) of Halifax, daughter Allison Smith (John McDowell) and son Greg Smith (Sybil Stymiest) all of Ottawa. Eldest daughter of Thelma Emms and the late Jack Emms of Montreal. Dear sister of Beverley Pidduck (Doug) of Ottawa and Travers Emms of Montreal. Beloved grandmother of Paul, Alexandra and Emily Fenton of Halifax. She attended MacDonald College and Sir George Williams College (B.A.), and taught in Montreal and Beaconsfield, PQ. Former President of the Montreal Presbytery United Church Young People's Union and of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference YPU. Lived two years in Wingham, ON and settled in Ottawa in 1960. Involved in volunteer activities with Planned Parenthood, Oxfam, the Riverside Hospital, and the Billings Estate Museum. As a teacher at the Museum of civilization she gained an interest and expertise in Canada's First Nations. Barb was an avid traveler, by canoe in Algonquin Park, and to the three coasts of Canada, the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and China. Her interests included art history, music and cross-country skiing. Founding member of the Canadian Centennial Choir. Private cremation. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2002, location to be announced. Arrangements in the care of Tubman Funeral Homes. donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
