SCOCCHIA, Venicio 2008-12-11 Mr. Venicio Scocchia, age 59 years of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hospice Unit, on December 9th, 2008 with his family at his side. Born in Castelli, Italy on October 21, 1949, he immigrated along with his mother to Port Arthur in 1953, reuniting with his father who had come to work one year earlier. Venicio began his working career on the custodial staff at Confederation College in 1972, and had enjoyed working there until December 2007, showing dedication and a tremendous work ethic. He always had a wonderfully positive attitude and kept his sense of humour, even through the more difficult times. His passion was to cycle. He cycled year round throughout the city, often making trips to Kakabeka during the summers. Another favourite pastime was bowling. In his earlier years, he played in leagues, accumulating many trophies for his fine play. Over the years, he enjoyed extensive travelling with his immediate family-going to Hawaii, Mexico, Florida, New York, the East and West coasts of Canada as well as making several trips to Italy to see the sites and visit relatives. Venicio will be sadly missed by his mother, Ida, as well as his brothers, Sergio (Diane), Tulio (Beverley) and Jesse (Debra). He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Laura, Daniel, Gregory, Andrea, Natalie, and Dante. He is also survived by numerous cousins in Thunder Bay and aunts, uncles, and cousins in Italy. Venicio was predeceased by his father Santino and by his grandparents, most recently by his grandmother, Nicoletta DiCarlo. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 12th, 2008 leaving the Harbourview Funeral Centre at 9:10 a.m. to St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, 123 Hilldale Road, for Funeral Mass to be celebrated by Rev. Lino Santi, c.s., beginning at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, where the Vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations in Venicio’s memory may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation - Northern Cancer Fund or to a charity of your choice.
