Frederick Joseph Whitty (1919 - 2005) MIRAMICHI, NB - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick Joseph Whitty, loving husband of Katherine Whitty (Regan) of Miramichi on Sunday, November 6, 2005. Born in Chatham, October 8, 1919 Dad was the son of the late William and Louise Whitty (Cunningham). He was a devoted member of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Basilica all his life. A fourth degree Knight and member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dad's love for music was well served with the Fireman's Band, the Choral Society and as a tenor with Saint Michael's Choir for more than twenty-five years. He enjoyed curling and embraced a pleasure for golf for more than twenty years. After forty-four loyal years of service with the federal government he retired. He served overseas with the North Shore Regiment from 1941-1945 as Monsignor Hickey's assistant. He brandished no metal, only the word of God. He played music to sooth the soul of the weary soldier and provided aid to many on the battlefield. A man of strong moral character, Dad will long be remembered as a loving, compassionate gentleman with tremendous respect for his fellow man. Along with his wife Katherine, Dad is survived by one son, David Whitty (Carole) of Calgary; five daughters, Barbara McLaughlin (John) of Miramichi; Kathy Burchill (Derek) of Miramichi; Mary Susan Gregan of Halifax; Patty Brennan (Paul) of Miramichi; and, Carol Campbell of Miramichi; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters Mary Louise "Babe" Daley (late Joseph) of Miramichi, Carmel Laderoute (Bernard) of Hamilton; brother, Merlin Whitty (Mary) of Calgary, as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins. Dad was predeceased by his parents; sister, Marie Kerr and brothers, Arthur, Frank, Nicholas, Henry, Thomas, Patrick, and Richard. Resting at Maher's Funeral Home in Miramichi, visitation will take place Tuesday, November 8th from 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass with Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11a.m. from Saint Michael's Basilica with Father John Fraser officiating. The Knights of Columbus Branch 1219 will form the honour Guard. Saint Michael's Choir accompanied by organist Norma Sugden will offer music and hymns: Lift High the Cross, Lady of Knock, Shelter Me O God, Songs of Angels, Psalm 140 and Jerusalem My Destiny. Granddaughter Patty Pederson (Burchill) will sing What a Wonderful World and Only a Shadow. Scripture readings will be offered by son-in-law John and daughter Carol with prayers of the faithful by Barbara. Refreshments will follow in the parish hall. Dad's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: Jason Whitty, Jeffery Whitty, Michael McLaughlin, Andrew McLaughlin, Michael Brennan and Matthew Brennan. Flowers, donations to Saint Michael's Restoration Fund or a charity of one's choice are accepted with most sincere appreciation. An honour guard will be held at the funeral home by the Knights of Columbus and a Legion Tribute Service will be held Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m. "Never say good-bye…it's too final, say Cheerio, until we meet again." Frederick Joseph Whitty. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Maher's Funeral Home Miramichi. [Times & Transcript]
