Born in Grand Falls, NL, on November 6, 1921, she was the eldest daughter of the late Naomi and Herbert Ivany. Dorothy cared for her seven children on her own during the extended periods while her husband Harold served his country in France, Korea and Vietnam. After many years of postings, the family settled in Halifax, where Dorothy was a member of St. Agnes Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and was an active member of their C.W.L. Her favourite volunteer activities were with the Halifax School for the Blind. Dorothy instilled her love for song and dance in her children and was known in Northwood Manor for her friendly smile. Despite a stroke that robbed her of much of her ability to communicate, she was often spotted at a Newfie sing-along singing the words to a favourite tune, "you can take the girl out of Newfoundland, but you can't take Newfoundland out of the girl". She was a loving mother to her children, Beryl (Austin) Jessome, Dartmouth; Harold, Thailand; Dianne (Thomas) Corkum, Halifax; Lynda (Ronald) Killeen, Bedford; Sylvia (Donald) Ritcey, Bedford; David (Janice), Dartmouth; Michael, Halifax; Cathy (Paul) Whitlock, Ottawa; Yemane Muzey, Fredericton. She was the beloved grandmother to 16 grandchildren. They will all miss her spontaneous hugs and kisses. special love from all of Dorothy's children is sent to all of her relatives and especially her sisters and brothers on the loss of their eldest sister. She was predeceased by husband, Harold; son, John; youngest sister, Yvonne. Arrangements are entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral mass 2 p.m. Friday in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Interment to follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
