Richard David Hotchkis September 15, 1952 - November 30, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Campbell's Funeral Home Richard David Hotchkis, beloved son of Dick and Darlene Hotchkis, Amherst NS, died at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, AB, on November 30, 2005. Born September 15, 1952 Amherst NS, he was an Honour Graduate from the Amherst Regional High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB, Richard did his Graduate Study at the Catholic University, Sociological Institute Nymegen, The Netherlands. On his graduation with Doctorandus, Richard received an award of merit. He was noted for his contribution to the development of empirical religious sociology. He was employed with the University Outreach Institution for Sociology & Social Psychology in Apeldoorn. He returned to Canada and was employed with the Athabasca University, Athabasca, AB as a Research Analyst. In his youth he was a member of the Sr. Hi-Y Group; YMCA Leader Corps; he attained his Queen Scout Badge in Boy Scouts Canada; worked as a Counselor, YMCA Big Cove Camp in the summer. His interests were oil painting, drama, swimming, lobster fishing with his dad, canoeing and biking. He is survived by his C/L May Melnyk, her children, Tanya, London, England and Dr. Anthony Melnyk, Abilene, Texas, his ex-wife, Lydi van der Burg and their sons Dion, Jore and Wikke, The Netherlands. Sisters Anne Hotchkis, nephews, Jason and Josh Lindsay, Cornwall, PE; Janet and husband Stephen Lowe and daughter Meredith, Halifax NS. Special Uncles Rev. G.B. Hotchkis and Kathleen, Yakima, Washington, T. Cyril Hotchkis, Montreal, Gerald McKay, Trenton ON, David McKay and Frances, West Brook NS. Special Aunts Barbara Gilbert and Michael, Isobel Sauder, Islington, ON, Great Aunt Lillie MacDonald, New Glasgow NS. He was predeceased by his loving Grandparents, Dr. Thomas and Marguerite Hotchkis and John and Jean McKay. The Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church, Amherst on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 2 p.m. with The Rev. Glenn Eason officiating. Interment will be held privately. No flowers by request. Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906).
