Wilfred Joseph Simmons May 01, 1931 - January 05, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth) SIMMONS, Wilfred Joseph - 73, North Preston, passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2005, surrounded by his family. Born in East Preston, he was a son of the late Edward and Florence (James) Simmons. Wilfred worked for Perisoda Construction and operated the cement plant, L.E. Shaw, as a cement finisher for Trynor's Paving, Halifax Paving, and supervisor for Twin City Paving before starting his own paving company in 1973 which he and his wife Gloria incorporated in 1975. Simmons was the first black paving company incorporated in Nova Scotia. He was a former captain of District 8 Volunteer Fire Department, chairperson of The Child Medical Centre, chairperson for the daycare board, trustee for schools and served on the Recreation Association, all in North Preston. Wilfred was a member of Watershed Association Development Enterprise, member of the Preston Board of Trade, Dartmouth Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Independent Small Business, one of the founding members of the Black Business Consortium, member of the Ostomy Society, George Washington Carver Credit Union, member of the Better Business Bureau of Nova Scotia, and member of the finance funding committee and a board member for the Black Culture Centre. He was a deacon of St. Thomas United Baptist Church and a member of the senior choir, Men's Brotherhood, Sigma C Boys Group and other committees within the church. In addition to various activities, Wilfred enjoyed camping with his wife Gloria and friends. He was nominated for the Harry Jerome Award, was on the W.P. Oliver Wall of Honour, Black Cultural Centre, and several other awards. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Gloria; daughters, Shirl (John) Lee, New York; Barbara Ann Simmons, Westphal; Maxine (Ron) Miller, Ontario; sons, Wilfred Jr. (Jean), Calvin (Anne), Winslow (Lynn), Carlo (Loretta), all of North Preston; Edward (Rhonda), East Preston; brothers, Leon, Victor, Gilbert, Ernest; sisters, Blanche, Sheila, Stella, Olga, Cora, Mary, Lois, Julie, Juliette; 31 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; Godchildren, Elaine, Ontario; Zelma, Alvin, Alfred, all of North Preston; Sherman, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by brothers, Eric and Edward. Visitation will be held today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 8, in St. Thomas United Baptist Church, North Preston, Rev. Wallace Smith officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
