JELENIC, Robert M. - 58 years, former chairman and chief executive officer of Journal Register Company (“JRC“) died Wednesday, December 3, 2008, in Newtown, PA after a long courageous battle with cancer. Bob was the architect and driving force behind JRC before his retirement in November 2007 after 20 years with the Yardley, PA based Company. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joy, of New Hope, PA, his parents, Tom and Dana Jelenic, of Sudbury, Ontario, his children, Lee M. Jelenic and his wife, Bethany, of Philadelphia and Laine A. Nakfoor and her husband, Jeremiah, of Los Angeles, CA, his sister Marianne Jelenic of Sudbury, Ontario, and his grandson, Chase M. Jelenic, a of Philadelphia. Bob's friends and family describe him as a devoted husband and father, loyal, honest, diligent, thoughtful, brilliant, encouraging, generous, fun, driven, and a passionate leader. Bob always made time for his family and friends. Bob's three-plus decades of newspaper experience included 12 years with the Toronto Sun Publishing Group. An all- around good athlete known for his vivid personality, he grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and graduated at the top of his class from Laurentian University in Sudbury with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree. Robert starred as a quarterback for the Laurentian University football team in 1968 and 1969, and played semi-pro football for the Sudbury Spartans in 1970 and 1971. Bob was chairman and CEO of JRC since its inception in 1990 and led the Company through its initial public offering in 1997. Bob was instrumental in developing the clustering strategy, which became the industry standard adopted by many of the leading media companies throughout North America. Under Bob's stewardship, Journal Register Company grew from a newspaper publisher to a multimedia company that reaches 472,000 subscribers with its daily circulation. It owns 22 daily newspapers, including the Register, Connecticut's second largest daily and Sunday newspaper, and The Oakland Press, the third largest daily in metro Detroit. With 300 non-daily publications owned by the company, over 5.3 million people get their news and sports from JRC. Relatives, friends and colleagues are invited to call on Monday evening, December 8, 2008, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.)Richboro, PA and on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2008, at St. John's United Methodist Church, 820 Almshouse Rd., Ivyland, PA 18974 from 10:00 AM until his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to The Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111- 2497. 11347508
