EVELYN JEANETTE WAGNER It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother and grandmother, Evelyn JeanetteWagner, nee Giauque, age 81, of Rivers Edge Villa, International Falls, MN., who passed away on Sept. 19, 2001 at Falls Good Samaritan Center, Int’l. Falls, MN. Evelyn was born March 18, 1920 in Crookston, MN and in her younger years was raised in the Baudette area moving to Int’l. Falls in 1932. She attended Falls High School and was united in marriage to Clifford Wagner on March 16, 1940. Evelyn was a housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was always known to everyone for her kindness and great meals--no one ever left her home hungry. She belonged to Girl Scouts, St. Thomas League, Ladies Wednesday afternoon bowling league, Women of the Moose, VFW, and various card and birthday clubs. Danusia will be fondly remembered by her husband Bolek (Bill), and her daughter Alexandra (Wayne Daugherty) and her grandchildren Shannon and Geoff (Nepean), cousins Marynia and Stachna (Warsaw) Irene (Australia) and other family members world wide. She will be greatly missed by her "extended family" in Kingston and all over the world. Danusia took part in the Warsaw Uprising, was taken to a concentration camp in Germany, and late emigrated to Canada in 1949. Danusia’s humanitarianism and example of Christian love and charity was immeasurable. She loved to travel and explore, meet new people and make new friends. She was a tireless member of the Polish National Union Branch 5 and the Kingston Polish Refugee Committee. Her energy and talents were constantly admired as a volunteer in Guatemala, Poland or in her beloved city, Kingston. Her folk art is a part of so many homes. She catered to the needs of foreign students, new immigrants, community members and neighbours. "Danusia was everywhere." Friends will be received at the Central Chapel of Gordon F. BONNELLI Jean-Pierre Je me suis battu autant que j’ai pu, mais j’ai perdu le combat. Comment, à 54 ans, accepter de laisser derrière moi, surtout la veille de son anniversaire, celle qui a partagé 30 ans de ma vie (Rita Lemelin), aussi de laisser mon fils Gino Bonnelli et son épouse Jill. Comment ne pas penser à ma mère Marguerite Bonnelli qui vit l’épreuve la plus difficile pour un parent (la perte d’un enfant). Je t’aime et je vais t’aider, crois-moi. Je suis aussi déchiré de laisser mes frères Mario (Marie-France), Michel, Claude (Line) et ma soeur Lise, mes neveux François et Jean-Luc, mes nièces Tania, Julie et Sandra. Je laisse aussi celui que je considérais comme mon fils Dany Lemelin (Pascale Roy), celle que j’appelais ma petite amour Fanny et mon autre petite-fille Annie Pelletier Lemelin. J’ai une pensée spéciale pour mes beaux-frères et belles-soeurs de la famille Lemelin, Denise (Robert), Maurice (Micheline), Jean-Louis (Micheline), Huguette (Jean-Guy), Normand (Odette), Gilles (Lise). Je laisse aussi dans le deuil mon ex-épouse Jocelyne Tremblay et les membres de sa famille: Monique, Carole, Jocelyn et leurs conjoints. J’ai aussi beaucoup de peine à quitter mes amis intimes Mario et Karen, France, Diane, Christian, Serge, Yves, Gervais, les employés du Métro Courville et de la pharmacie Laurier et Lavoie qui ont su me réconforter durant les 2 dernières années. STEPHEN ALLAN MATHEWS Steven Allan Mathews, 52, passed away Sept. 6, 2001 in Palmer, Alaska. Steven was born Jan. 12, 1949 in Bemidji, Mn. He graduated from International Falls High School in 1967 and attended two years of college. Steve served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, retiring in 1992. His Alaska residency began June 5, 1983 at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where he lived until 1987. He lived in Anchorage and Chiguak before moving to Wasilla in 1993, where he lived until the time of his death. Steve had been employed by the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1992. He also worked as a school bus driver for Laidlaw Transit from 1994-2001. His hobbies and special interests were hunting, fishing, R.V. camping, snowmobiling, leather and woodworking crafts, and reading. Steven was predeceased by his father, Robert L. Mathews of International Falls, Mn.; and stepfather, Ed. Joe Podgorski of Fort Frances, Ont. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Virginia; daughters, Stephanie (John) Jessen, and Jennifer (Michael) Spindler; son, Benjamin (Amy) Mathews; grandchildren, J.J., Judy, Joshua, Kaylynn, Tanner, and Nikki; mother, Angie Podgorski of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother, Leroy (Sandra) of White Bear Lake, Mn.; and sister, Melody (Keith) Bolin of Duluth, Mn. Also surviving are his father- and mother-in-law, Clarence and Ester Bishop of Badger, Mn.; half-brother, Tim Mathews and half-sister, Cheryl (Virgil) Bishop; and “Toots.” Many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles, and many good friends also survive. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and all who knew Steve. He always was there with a helping hand, making you laugh. He could turn bad days into good. Funeral services were held in Wasilla, Alaska on Sept. 10, 2001. Cremation followed. Prayers and a memorial mass were held Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 in Fort Frances. MARGARET MARIE BALLARD (Peggy Anderson) Peggy was born on September 5, 1922 in Spooner, Minnesota, and was raised as a Canadian in Fort Frances, Ontario. Peggy lived a cheerful and loving life at 19-600 Nashville St., Chatsworth, CA., 91311, until her sudden, but peaceful passing on September 20, 2001. Peggy married Harlan “Hub” Ballard, also of Fort Frances, on June 6, 1952. Peggy followed her husband, with his banking career, from Fort Frances to Vancouver, B.C. before returning to the United States in San Francisco, CA. Hub’s banking career saw Peggy, Hub and their three children (Ron, Ian and Beth) move from the San Francisco Bay area to Santa Rosa, to Los Angeles, then to Brussels, Belgium before returning again to Los Angeles, and finally settling in Chatsworth, CA. in 1975, where she lived happily for the rest of her life. Peggy was a devoted wife and mother to her family, and tended to their every need all these years. Our mother was a Saint, and she is dearly missed. Peggy is survived by her husband, Hub of Chatsworth; her son Ron, along with his wife, Wendy, of San Diego; her son Ian, and his wife, Cindy, and their children, Keith and Brianne of Claremont, CA.; her daughter, Beth Delmonte, and her husband, Frank, and their children, Jack and Kayleigh, of Lakewood, Colorado. Also surviving is her brother, Ron Anderson, and wife, Elaine, of Fort Frances; her two nephews, Blair and Doug Anderson, and niece, Cheryl Armstrong, all of Fort Frances. Peggy was predeceased by her mother, Mrs. Betty Anderson, on April 16, 1995. Peggy loved and was devoted to her family, and in kind, her family loved their dear mother. Laurent Joseph Albert Nolet , of Mattice Death: September 27th, 2001 A memorial service for pioneer Mattice-Hearst area resident Laurent Joseph Alfred Nolet, 81, of the Foyer des Pionniers Nursing Home was held Sept. 29, 2001. He died Sept. 27 at Notre-Dame Hospital. Born Oct. 8, 1919 in Ste-Germaine, Dorchester, Quebec, he came to Mattice in 1921, moved to Kapuskasing in the late 1960s as a salesman for Uptown Motors, and then came to Hearst in 1973. A town employee beginning in May 1975, he retired in October 1984 as a Hearst Recreation Centre icemaker. A handyman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and making bird houses. He was predeceased by wife Mariette (née Brousseau) Nolet in 1999, a son Bertrand in 1957, and infant sons Marc G. and Marc A., brothers Marcel and Thomas Nolet, both in Mattice, and sisters Maria Plamondon, Victoria Plamondon and Roseanna Nadeau, all in Mattice, and Simone Leclerc, in Kapuskasing. He leaves sons Donald (Lise) of Opasatika and Aimé (Hélène) Nolet of Hearst, and daughters Annette (Tom) Purchase of London, Gemma (Dave) Gale of Calgary and Bella (Louis) Laflamme of Hearst. Also surviving are Georgette (Amédée) Tanguay and Laurette Bizier, all of Kapuskasing, brothers Rosario Nolet of Toronto, Simon (Jeanne D'Arc), Victor (Thérèse), and Luc (Denise), all of Kapuskasing, as well as 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Cremation was done at the Hillcrest Crematorium in Matheson. Rev. René Grandmont officiated the service at the St-François-Xavier Church. Interment followed at the St-François-Xavier Cemetery. Funeral director was the Lafrance Funeral Home. The family has requested that commemorative gifts be made to the Foyer or Canadian Diabetes Association. Published on September 27th, 2001

Born July 10, 1930 and raised in the town of Castellamare Del Golfo, Italy and a 36 years resident of Ottawa. Vito, beloved husband of 35 years and best friend of Rosaria Scaffidi Argentina. Loving and proud father of Santo (Mirella), Maria (Tom Gallivan) and Antonino. Cherished "nonno" of Michael and Vittoria Gallivan. Predeceased by parents Santo and Francesca Pecorella and brother Antonino Pecorella and sister Maria Sottile. Vito is survived by his sister Paolina, brothers Francesco, Vincenzo and Andrea. Quietly, on September 25, 2001, at the Villa Marconi LTC Residence in Ottawa. Mara Pany, M.A., M.Ed., loving mother of Marko Wolf-Pany and his wife, Kathryn Jast. Mara, daughter of the late Captain George Pany of Rijeka, Croatia and the late Wanda Vio of Fiume, Italy, and sister of the late Lily Pany of Montreal, was a remarkable citizen of the world, speaking seven languages fluently. She was born in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1924 and lived at various times throughout her lifetime in Switzerland, England (where her son Marko was born), Brazil and Uruguay. In 1969 Mara and Marko immigrated to Ottawa, where she obtained her Masters Degress in Linguistics and Education from the University of Ottawa, pursued her love of classical music and was employed as a professor of English at Algonquin College for over 18 years. Mara is survived by many relatives including Dr. Paulo and Marie Louise Vio and family in Holland, Dr. Olaf and Zuza Vio and family in Brazil and the U.S., Livia Vio and family in France, the Reverend Don Romeo Vio and family in Italy, Vesna (Ruzic) Draxler and family of the U.S. Switzerland, England and France, Leila and Igor Vio (daughter and son of the late Dr. Ivo Vio) and family in Croatia and her dearest lifelong friends, Ilse Weiler of Uruguay and Yolanda Seelinger of Venezula.
