OLYNYK, Michael 2009-07-24 It is with great sadness that the family of Mr. Steven Michael Olynyk, age 55 years, announce his unexpected passing on Monday, July 20, 2009 at his residence in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Steve was born January 6, 1954 to Michael and Mary Olynyk, he was raised and educated here and spent his growing years on Prince Arthur Boulevard. Being a plumber by trade, of which he was very proud, he was one of the founding members of Boreal Mechanical Contractors and had worked with and employed many of the local tradesman. Steve could only be describes as a "workaholic" who just didn‘t know when to stop and could always be counted on to be fair. Steve‘s pride and joy were his three sons, Ken, Brian and Kris. He could always be counted on to support "his boys" in any of their chosen endeavors and always gave fatherly advise – like it or not. His paradise was his camp on Gilbert Lake in Atikokan. There he enjoyed camping, fishing, puttering and getting together with his good friends John and Donna Rowell. Steve is survived by his wife, Marjory (Vibert); sons Ken of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Brian (Brenda) of Markham, Ontario and Kris; sisters Elizabeth Hoszu and Ann (Morris) Tarnawsky and niece and nephew Dana and Matthew Tarnawsky. Numerous relatives also survive in New York, Chicago, Winnipeg and the Ukraine. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary Olynyk; brother in law Steve Hoszu and nephew Michael Tarnawsky. Funeral services for Mr. Steve Olynyk will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2009 in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James with the Rev. Deborah Kraft officiating. Private interment will take place in Mountainview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Westfort Chapel. MILLER, Edward 2009-07-24 MILLER Edward Miller entered eternal life on July 22, 2009 at St. Josephs Hospice Unit in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Edward was born in Viscount, Saskatchewan on April 12, 1936. He worked for C.P. Rail until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement Ed kept himself busy by volunteering for several organizations. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Catholic Family Centre and D.O.O.R.S. He enjoyed traveling, sharing coffee with his retiree friends, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He loved sports, especially hockey and baseball, and he enjoyed watching his grandsons play hockey and going to local hockey games at the Fort Williams Gardens with family and friends. He enjoyed driving and picking up his grandchildren after school, giving them a good time and treating them. Ed is survived by his wife Shirley, his sons Dwaine (Cathy), Steven (Dawn), and Rick (Kathie); grandchildren Courtney, Cassandra, Jordan, Maxwell and Anthony. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Martin (Betty) Chilliwack, B.C., Albert, Edmonton, Alta., Sr. Rita, Chatham, Ont., Bridget Wolfe, and Sr. Elizabeth Anne, both of Saskatoon, Sask., as well as his mother-in-law, Pearl Petrushak, Thunder Bay, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Myrt and Peter Hayward, Thunder Bay and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Elizabeth Miller, seven brothers Leo, John, Joe, Bernard, Anthony, Benedict and Peter, and two sisters, Magdalen (in infancy) and Betty German and father-in-law Steven Petrushak. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre, St. Joseph‘s Hospice Unit, as well as his neighbours, and friends for their care, support and compassion for Ed during his illness. Respecting Ed‘s wishes cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick‘s Cathedral celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G.. Final interment will follow in St. Andrew‘s Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. Josephs Hospice Unit, St. Patrick‘s Cathedral, or to the charity of your choice. FULTON , Jody Lee Jody Lee Fulton at the Montreal General Hospital, July 16, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, beloved daughter of Captain J.D. (Doug) Fulton and Marion (Kerr) Fulton. Born at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, August 5, 1956, she held our hand, sometimes following, sometimes leading as we pursued our dream. Growing up in communities throughout northern Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, in 1973 she graduated from Lachine High School. In 1974 she graduated from the Institute Videmanette, Rougemont, Switzerland, with honors in French and German. Discovered at Expo 67 she made her TV debut as co-host with her brother Kerry for several weeks on Tween Set a popular CBC teen program. She was drawn to modeling but her real love was aviation. She joined Execaire reservations in 1977, and then in 1983 her adventuresome spirit took her to Goroko, EHP, Papua New Guinea where she worked with Talair, a regional airline serving outposts throughout this fascinating country. After thirteen exciting years she rejoined Execaire at Montreal from 1996 until her passing. Predeceased by her grandparents and an aunt Shirley (Fulton) Rutledge. Left to mourn are her parents Doug and Marion Fulton, Portage la Prairie; brother Kerry and his wife Roberta with children, James, Thomas and William, Calgary; aunt Marjorie Fulton, Ottawa; uncle and aunt, Jack and Loretta (Kerr) Carmichael, Winnipeg; and her many cousins and friends. The family is grateful for the help and support Jody received from her many friends around the world during her six year fight, especially her friends and co-workers at Execaire. At Jody's request Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life was held at the il Centro Restaurant, Bord du Lac, Pte. Claire Sunday, July 19, with remembrance and Interment in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie at a later date. LYE, Leslie Ernest November 18, 1924 - July 21, 2009 Peacefully at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital at the age of eighty-four. Born in Toronto, Les attended Withrow Public School, Riverdale Collegiate and the University of Toronto. He pursued post-graduate studies at the Lorne Greene Academy, setting him on course to forever change the Ottawa radio and television world. Les served in the Canadian Air Force, and after D-Day remustered into the army and volunteered Pacific. Les had a lengthy, prolific career in radio, theatre and television in both Toronto and Ottawa. He also taught Speech and Diction in the broadcasting diploma program at Algonquin College. He contributed countless volunteer hours to many local charities. His greatest feat, however, was being the best husband, father and friend one could ever hope to have. Les is predeceased by his parents Marion and Edward Lye, his brothers Donald and Kenneth Lye, and his daughter Jennifer Lye. He is survived by his wife and love of his life Jonni Marshall Lye, his children Daralyn Steele (John), Brett Lye, Emily Lye (William Hopkins), grandchildren Josh, Ben, Zac, Chelsea, Chase, Sophie and Jack, and great-grandchildren Katie, Megan, Ella, Cooper and Alexander. OBITUARY Fr. JOSEPH CLEMENT JOHNSON, S.J. Peacefully, after a long period of illness, at the age of eighty-six, Fr. Johnson died at home Rene Goupil House, (Jesuit Infirmary) Pickering, Ontario on Wednesday, July 22, 2009. He was in his sixty-ninth year as a Jesuit and fifty-seventh year as a priest. He was the Pastor of Canadian Martyrs Parish (Halifax), from 1958-1973. He then served as Pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Toronto from 1973-1982. In 1982 he moved to Winnipeg where he was Pastor of St. John Brebeuf Parish until 1992. From 1992- 2007 he was an Associate Pastor at St. Ignatius Parish in Winnipeg. In 2007 he asked to retire at Rene Goupil House in Pickering, Ontario, where he lived out his remaining days praying for the Society of Jesus and the world. Joe loved being a priest, and people responded to his dedication, warmth and prayerfulness. ATCHESON , Harold January 28, 1929 - July 15, 2009 It is with sincere sadness we announce the passing of Harold Atcheson. Harold was born in Athelstan, Quebec on January 28, 1929 and passed away at the Red Deer Hospital on July 15, 2009. He came to Alberta in 1948, liked the potential there was in the west and decided to spend most of his life in Calgary and Strathmore. Harold was predeceased by his brother George. He is survived by his wife Margaret of fifty-four years; children: Cindy (Sheldon), Debbie, Brent (Mary), Tim; grandchildren: Lindsay, Wayne, Tania, Kim, great-grandchild Daegan; sister Elsie Sparrow; sister-in-law Margaret Atcheson and all his nieces and nephews. DUGGAN , Charles Dominic November 4, 1930 - July 21, 2009 Charles Dominic Duggan, beloved husband of Marguerite of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Charlie married Marg in Strome, AB on August 13, 1956. He was a committed and ethical businessman serving Calgary Co-Op for thirty-two years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Besides his loving wife Marguerite, Charles is also survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Debra (George Eden) of Calgary, AB, and Cherie of Vancouver, BC; and by sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers, brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mary Duggan of Fenelon Falls, ON. Charles came from a large family of thirteen, with four sets of twins of which Charlie was one. FINKLEMAN , Emily 1916 - 2009 Heaven just got a little nicer. Much loved mother, sister, wife, aunt, friend, cousin and Bridge afficionado, Emily Finkleman (nee Shulman) lived a long and rewarding life, raising nine children, making hundreds of friends along the way. Raised in Calgary, she married Sam on New Year's Eve 1938. In addition to being Mom to all those kids, Emily always found time to help others, volunteering with "The Friendship Circle" and operating the NCJW's Bargain Bazaar. As a senior, she was vivacious, always ready to get up and dance. Her smile and goodness will forever adorn the lives of all who had the privilege to know her. She is survived by her children Irv, Laura, Donna (Morley) Kiss, Harold (Beth Hedva), Paul (Deb), Monte, Ronna (Ruth), Rena (Steve) Richards, her loving sisters Jean Libin and Nettie (Maynard) Sarvas, best friend Eta Gardos, as well as ten grandkids and five great-grandchildren. Emily was predeceased by her loving husband Sam and devoted daughter Sharon. The family would like to thank the wonderful team of caregivers at the Chinook Hospice for the comfort they provided Mom during her final days. HARRIS , Virginia (nee Lee) It is with sadness, that the family of Virginia Harris announces her passing on Sunday morning, July 19, 2009 of complications from a recent illness. She is survived by her husband Art, her daughters Jocelyn Wilson (Stuart) of Calgary, Karen of Strathmore, and the most important loves of her life, her grandchildren, Cayla Wilson Saby (Jon), Tom Wilson, Kate and Luc Harris. She was especially thrilled with the arrival of her great-granddaughter - Dylann Saby, and loved to be beckoned with the call "GG"! She was predeceased by her sister Marjorie and brother Jack and is survived by her brother Bill. Virginia was born in Chinook in April of 1931. She completed her schooling in this small village school, and often proclaimed to have the third highest math mark in her class (there were only three in class!) She then went to Calgary to complete her teacher's training. She taught in several small schools where her students were either almost the same age as her, or taller. She met Art while she was teaching in East Coulee. They were married in 1954 and moved to Canmore where Art worked for Calgary Power. Jocelyn and Karen came along and kept them very busy. Virginia taught in Canmore for many years and looked fondly back on her time in the classroom. In 1975, Art was transferred to Calgary and Virginia looked forward to shopping at the malls and eating out at a variety of restaurants. In 1977, Virginia was diagnosed with breast cancer, and beat it!! She was a thirty-two year survivor. As Mom never did "goodbyes", there will not be a Funeral. We would invite you to come celebrate her life at the Calgary Winter Club, 4611 - 14 Street N.W., on Tuesday, July 28 at 1:30 p.m. Please come with stories to share! In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her victory over breast cancer, donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. Mom left a little note for each and every one of us, and it ended with this statement: "If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you.". Helen was born in Tiszaadony, Hungary and immigrated to Canada at the age of eleven years. She first settled in the Lethbridge area until moving to Calgary in 1942 where she remained until her passing. Helen raised a wonderful family, worked at Woodward's Stores and travelled extensively.
