LONG, Ernest James - It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing away peacefully of Ernest James Long (age 81) Tuesday March 03 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elliot Lake. Beloved husband of Irene Marie, loving father of Terry (Lisa), Brad (Rhona), Janice (John), Jane and David (predeceased). Loving father of Micheal (Elaine Menard) of Ottawa, Cydney Deslaurier (Claude) of Brampton, Pamela Swayne (Pete) of Newmarket, Jeffrey of North Bay, Paula Last (Peter) of Sarnia, and Lori O'Farrell (Steve) of North Bay. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Matthew, Laura, Jordan, Kathleen, Carly, Jason, Anthony, Mallory and Adam. John was predeceased by his infant son, parents Edwin and Margerite Swayne, and sisters Norma and Doris. Dearly loved brother of Harold Swayne of Nanaimo, BC, Margery Fryer (Bud) of North Bay, and Richard Swayne (Lois) of Mesquite, Nevada, USA. Forever remembered by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. COGHLIN, Patricia "Pati" Anne Patricia "Pati" Anne Coghlin of Lethbridge passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the age of 58 years, after a seven year struggle with Viral Encephalitis which left her with severe loss of her short term memory. Pati leaves to mourn her, son David of Calgary; sister Arlene (Tom) Price, and their sons Jason (Ildiko) and their daughter Ashlyn Price, and Jeffrey Price; brother Ron (Judy) Coghlin and their children, Stephanie, Deana and Stuart of Whitehorse. Pati was predeceased by her mother Stephanie (Briosi) Coghlin and her father Del Coghlin. Pati specialized in Gastroenterology and in 1992 obtained the Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse designation. Pati had all of the qualities of an excellent nurse according to long-time associate Dr. Jim Shepherd of Calgary. Pati was a dedicated mother and very proud of her son David. One of her favorite life experiences was a trip to Scotland that she took with David. Having no short term memory meant that every day was an awakening into the "same" but totally unfamiliar world. Despite this handicap Pati endured courageously for seven long years aided by the relentless love and support of her sister Arlene. Stanley was born and raised on the farm near Middle Lake, Saskatchewan. After marrying Muriel in October 1954, they moved to Calgary where they settled and raised their family. SCHLENDER, Alvin Fred May 4, 1932 - March 4, 2009 Alvin Schlender of Crossfield, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2009 after a long battle with illness at the age of 76 years. Alvin was born May 4, 1932 in Trochu, Alberta, son of Otto and Anna Schlender of Essen, Germany. Alvin enjoyed a long and prosperous career as a welder, electrician, construction contractor and aviation mechanic. He later began a waste removal company, which the whole family operated for over twenty years in the Airdrie and Crossfield districts. Alvin was a dedicated member of the Crossfield Lions and Odd Fellows Clubs as well as many other organizations. Alvin is survived by his sons, Kevin and Heidi, Colin and Marti-Joe. Granddaughters, Dominique, Danielle and Kylie. He was predeceased by his wife, Rhoda; brother, Kurt and sister, Elfrieda. URBAN, JULIUS Julius Urban passed away on March 4, 2009 in Edmonton at the age of 80 years after a brief illness. He will be deeply missed by his sons Vic (Tara) of Calgary, Mark (Rosalie), Ron and Arnie all of Edmonton, and his loving companion Rose Danyluk. He leaves grandchildren, Brendan, Amie, Kurtis, Ruth, Ethan, Bethany and Lucas. He was predeceased by his wife Maria and his brothers Ambrose, Herman and Felix. Julius was born in Hochweissen Czechoslovakia on April 4, 1928 on a small farm. After being displaced to Germany he elected to immigrate to Canada in 1952. He travelled from coast to coast, worked at numerous occupations and settled in Edmonton. He married Maria in 1955 and raised a family, then retired as a Journeyman insulator. After Maria passed away in 1992 he began to pursue his other passions, in particular tree farming to raise exotic fruits and vines. Through his love of dancing he met Rose and his last years were made wonderful through travelling and entertaining with her. Mrs Angela Downs September 1, 1928 - March 2, 2009 On Monday, March 2, 2009 Angela passed away peacefully at the age of 80 years. Angela was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1993; parents William and Katherine Moser; sisters Mary (Martin) Weist, Ethel (James) Tanouye, Leona (John) Pekush; brothers Jim (Clara), Vincent (Kate) and Pius. Angela is survived by daughters Darlene (Brendan) Norman, Diane (Terry) Spencer, Heather (Bob) Shillingford; grandchildren Jason Norman (Amy), Garrett Norman (Courtney), April Berndt (Dan), Tyler Berndt (Amy) and Ryan Shillingford (Krystal); great grandchildren Kasandra, Troy, Hunter and Liam Norman, Trace Berndt and Hannah Hook; sister Madeline Baumgartner; sister-in-law Mary Moser; and numerous nephews and nieces. Angela was born on September 1, 1928 in Regina and raised in Odessa, SK. After living in Calgary from 1953 to 1960, she returned to Regina. Upon retiring in 1993 she continued to enjoy outings for coffee with the girls, going for walks, visiting with family, playing cards and finding those interesting books which she spent hours reading. Mrs. Filma Peggy Simmonds August 18, 1947 - March 3, 2009 SIMMONDS, Filma "Peggy" 61, North Preston, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2009, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in North Preston, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Janet (Smith) Whynder. Peggy worked at Hermes for 25 years and retired in 1996. Although she was involved in her church, Saint Thomas Baptist, for many years, retirement gave her the leisure time she wanted to participate more fully in the organizations she loved. She was a dedicated and faithful member of the Community Club Choir which became a big part of her life. Her membership spanned more than 20 years. She was a long-standing member of the Women Missionary Society. These two groups gave her the opportunity to use her beautiful singing voice, which she was very proud of, to bring joy to others. Besides being part of these groups, she took pride in being at church every Sunday unless she was not feeling well. Peggy also taught Sunday school for many years. She was able to instill the love of God into her students while developing a strong relationship with them. To this day many of them continue to refer to her as "Ms. Peggy". One other thing she took seriously was her health. She could be seen walking in the community on a daily basis regardless of the weather conditions. Besides walking, she enjoyed reading and singing. Peggy loved her family. After her God, her family was a priority in her life. One could always hear her talk about her husband, children, grandchildren, and family members. She also had a place in her heart for her special friends who no doubt will miss her presence, especially on Sunday mornings. We will miss her laughter, her uniqueness, and the joy she brought to those whom she came in contact with. Peggy is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Gilbert; daughter, Filma "Charmaine" Wright, Dartmouth; son, Antron (Bernice), Halifax; sisters, Gloria Simmons, North Preston; Sylvia Tate, Pickering, Ont.; Regena (Manuel) David, Hammonds Plains; brother, Aaron (Barb) Whynder, North Preston; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Rose Ann, Janet, Eunice and Elaine; brothers, Nelson, Graham, Leroy, Carl, and Gary. Mr. Thomas Frederick O' Laughlin November 7, 1930 - March 3, 2009 O'LAUGHLIN, Thomas Frederick 78, of Upper Tantallon, formerly of Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late John and Frances (Goudreault) O'Laughlin. Thomas retired from the Royal Canadian Navy after 25 years of service and then went on to work for the Bank of Montreal until his retirement. He was an avid gardener, bowler and golfer. He was a member of Avon Valley Golf Club. Thomas loved to travel and spend time bowling with his grandsons. He will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched. Surviving are sons, Gary (Michele), Dartmouth; Stephen (Mary), Upper Tantallon; grandchildren, Paula, Mark and David; great-grandchildren, Zackery, Jacob and Solphia; sister, Muriel "Toot" Casey, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Thomas was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Lorna (Hayes), who passed away in 2008, as well as brother, John. Mrs. Edith Nicholls November 29, 1927 - March 3, 2009 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Edith, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, after a lengthy but courageous battle. Predeceased by her husband Ken (Nick), daughter Barbie and son Robert. Leaving behind to mourn are her children Wayne, Elaine, Ken (Sandra), Connie, Allan (Alicia) and Corrinne (Rodger). Born in Philadelphia, U.S.A daughter of the late Everett and Thelma Stairs. Louisa was a member of Uplands Baptist Church, had a great sense of humour, Chinese Checkers champ of The Sutherland Family, loved any game that would make you think, reading, walking, talking, a good crossword puzzle and piping hot cup of tea. She will be sadly missed by three sons; Brian (Jeanne) of Dartmouth, Kerry (Joanne) of Moncton and Darren (Anabel) of Dieppe, one daughter, Rilla (Rick) of Moncton, ten grandchildren; Jasara, Kara, Shalane, Roxane, Alyssa, Travis, Kirk, Daniel, Zachary, Matthew as well as her five great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Everett of Huntsville, Alabama and all her special cousins that were like brothers to her. Gone on before were her husband, Cecil and her son Robert. Metha and Martin resided in Regina since 1957 when they emigrated from Holland. Throughout Metha’s life she endured and overcame many hardships and illnesses. Her strong faith, zest for life and sense of humour allowed her to overcome all obstacles. With each challenge Metha embraced the opportunity to meet new people, make friends and share stories. Her jovial personality was clearly magnetic. She knew how to have a good time, live life to the fullest, to appreciate and be thankful for what she had. Metha will be remembered for being a great wife, mother, Oma, friend and prankster. She had many gifts and passions which included playing cards and scrabble, cooking, knitting, crocheting, painting, sewing, writing her memoirs, traveling and driving her “Porsche”. She loved summers at the cottage, Martin’s beautiful gardens and spending hours on the beach with family and friends. Metha brought the hills of Lumsden Beach alive with the sound of her keyboard music. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks, love and appreciation to the amazing staff of Grace Hospice. DENNISS LANG, Thérèse 1922-2009 À l'Hôpital Jean-Talon, le 26 février 2009, à l'âge de 87 ans, est décédée Thérèse Lang, épouse de feu Rosaire Denniss. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses filles Renée (Claude Monast), Diane, ses petits-enfants Claudia (Éric Taddeo), Pasquale (Barbara Paquin), Nicholas (Mélanie Dubé) et ses arrière-petits-enfants: Jessica, Mélissa.
