SEIDMAN, Leon - Died peacefully after a heroic battle, at Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at the age of 79. Beloved husband & soulmate of Selma Seidman (nee Miller). Forever loved by his children, Ernest (Marcy), Bonnie (Barry Kaplan), Sean (Synnove). Cherished “Papa Yoyo” of Jonathan, Jessica, Gillian, Jacob, Arielle, Owen, Lily and Violet. Dear brother of Frances Macknofsky. Predeceased by brother Joe and sister Evelyn Feldman. Leon will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Leon loved life passionately, and his family was always his greatest pride and joy. Funeral service was in Montreal on Friday, January 9. Abbé Anicet Greco À l'hôpital du Saint-Sacrement, le 15 janvier 2009 est décédé, à l'âge de 86 ans et 8 mois, monsieur l'abbé Anicet Greco, membre agrégé de la communauté des prêtres du Séminaire de Québec, fils de feu Vincenzo Greco et de feu Marie Gauthier. Après avoir fait ses études classiques au Petit Séminaire de Québec (1936 à 1944) et obtenu son baccalauréat ès arts de l'Université Laval en 1944, il fit ses études théologiques au Grand Séminaire de Québec et à l'Université Laval (1944 à 1949), il fut ordonné prêtre le 20 juin 1948. Il termina son baccalauréat en Théologie en 1949. En 1957 et 1958, il étudia la Philosophie à l'Université catholique de Washington et y reçut une maîtrise en Philosophie en 1961. Après son ordination à la prêtrise, il devint maître de Salle au Petit Séminaire de Québec de 1949 à 1956 et professeur de mathématiques de 1950 à 1953. Il fut reçu membre agrégé de la communauté des prêtres du Séminaire de Québec le 12 juin 1963. En 1952, il prit la direction des Cours d'été à l'Université Laval, alors une oeuvre du Séminaire de Québec, qu'il conserva jusqu'en 1972. Ayant quitté le Petit Séminaire de Québec pour l'Université Laval, il y exerça de nombreuses fonctions administratives jusqu'à son départ en avril 1989: sous-secrétaire de l'Université Laval (1956-1957), secrétaire de l'École des Gradués (1959-1960), secrétaire du Comité des bourses (1959-1962), directeur du Service de l'aide aux étudiants (1959-1960), modérateur de l'Université Laval (1961-1965), directeur de l'Extension de l'Enseignement universitaire (1962-1979), assistant du Recteur (1964-1969), directeur général adjoint du Service de l'éducation permanente (1972-1975), conseiller au Service de promotion de l'éducation permanente (1980-1982), adjoint au doyen de la Faculté des sciences et de génie (1982-1984), secrétaire de la Commission de la recherche (1982-1989). En plus de ses fonctions à l'Université Laval, l'abbé Greco se consacra à plusieurs tâches pastorales: aumônier des Soeurs dominicaines du Grand Séminaire de Québec (1972-1978), aumônier des religieuses de l'Année doctrinale (1985-1989), membre et secrétaire du Comité du Diaconat permanent (1983-1989), puis président du Comité (1989-1992). Après sa retraite de l'Université Laval, il fut nommé directeur responsable de la Résidence Cardinal-Vachon et supérieur des prêtres y résidant. Il occupa ce poste de 1989 à 1998. Depuis deux ans, il habitait à l'Unité de soins de la Résidence Cardinal-Vachon. Les prêtres du Séminaire de Québec et les membres de la famille recevront les condoléances au Pavillon Jean-Olivier-Briand du Séminaire de Québec (Résidence des prêtres) 1, rue des Remparts le dimanche 18 janvier de 14h à 16h30 et de 19h à 21h30 et à partir de 9h le jour des funérailles. Stationnement dans le jardin du Séminaire par l'entrée du 20, rue Port-Dauphin (le long du parc Montmorency). Les funérailles seront célébrées à la Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec le lundi 19 janvier 2009 à 10h. Elles seront présidées par Mgr Jean-Pierre Blais, évêque nommé de Baie-Comeau. L'inhumation se fera à la crypte des prêtres du Séminaire de Québec située sous la Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec. La direction des funérailles a été confiée à la Maison Lépine-Cloutier Ltée de Québec. Il était le frère de Micheline (feu Robert Breton), feu Pierre (Madeleine Harvey) et l'oncle de Louise, Pierre et Michel Greco et de Josée, Denis et Anick Breton. Outre ses confrères de la communauté des prêtres du Séminaire de Québec et les membres de sa famille, il laisse dans le deuil plusieurs personnes chères et amies. MAUREAU, Gerrit Theodorus Francis Ross Gerrit Theodorus Francis Ross Maureau died unexpectedly on December 20, 2008 along with his wife of twenty-five years, Dr. Sheila Malm, in a plane crash in the Colorado mountains. He leaves behind his brother Douglas Smith (Pam) and nephew Peter, all of Aldergrove, BC; sister, Sheila Smith of Vancouver; and a daughter from his previous marriage, Lisette Fraser (Kyle) and grandchildren, Abbi and Mattias, of Calgary. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Gerri was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He started his schooling at Dollar Academy in Scotland, and then spent his teen years in Calgary and Edmonton. After completing a BSc (Hons.) in Physics and Geology, and an MSc at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, he went on to do a year of graduate work at the University of California in Berkley. He began his career with Shell International which took him to Holland, Oman, and Texas, with brief stops in Africa. He left Shell after thirteen years, and returned to Canada to take up a position with PetroCanada where he was involved with offshore drilling in Newfoundland. This was followed by senior management positions with various companies in the oil industry. Eventually he became a consultant, started his own company of MaurOil International, and travelled throughout the world sharing his knowledge and expertise. He took a couple of long term positions in Germany and spent two years in St. John's, Newfoundland where he developed a masters program at Memorial University for executives in the oil industry. Most recently, he was CEO of the Canadian Petroleum Institute, and lately started "semi-retirement". He was a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). His fascination with flying began as an Air Cadet in Edmonton and continued throughout his life. He never missed an opportunity to take an aerial tour of any area he visited. From an awe inspiring aerial survey of the Himalayas in Nepal, to the flatlands of the prairies, he was always at home in the air. Gerri was a man who reflected the influences of both Europe and North America. In his early years he developed a facility for languages speaking English, Dutch and Spanish, later adding French, German and others to his repertoire. He appreciated the fine wines and culture of the Continent, as well as the efficiency of North America. He set high standards for himself and others, and was a gracious, genial host. He was well-read and enjoyed listening to music, especially Spanish guitar. He could play the trombone, guitar and piano although these hobbies were overshadowed by his passion for flying. He conversed easily with everyone, and was an excellent raconteur who enjoyed sharing stories, anecdotes and jokes. He and his wife, Sheila, loved traveling and took every opportunity to share time together in many parts of the world: Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Africa, Europe, parts of South America, and of course, much of North America. Most recently, they purchased a home in White Rock, BC where they planned to move later this year. Both their families were looking forward to having them closer by. A remembrance and celebration of the lives of both Gerri and Sheila will take place on January 25, 2009 at the Calgary Petroleum Club (319 - 5 Avenue S.W.) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The family wishes no flowers, but contributions in kind may be made in one, or both, of their names to the charity of your choice. CRICHTON, Marion 'May' - On Tuesday, January 13, 2009, after a long battle with heart disease, Marion 'May' Crichton passed away at the Kingston General Hospital. May's warmth, positive attitude, strength of character, humour and happy spirit will be sadly missed by her daughter Lin Arthur and son-in-law Brian Arthur; their children John and Jennifer; May's sister Sheila Stirling and her family; the family of her brother Andrew (deceased), as well as her many friends, old and new and care providers at Fairfield Manor East. May's family is profoundly grateful for the care she received from all who worked to keep her with us, in particular Dr. Tony Sanfilippo, cardiologist and Dr. Jim Belliveau, family doctor over the past 5 years; the team in emergency at KGH and the staff of the ICU during her recent fatal illness. You made her final journey one of dignity. May was born Marion Barclay in Bellsquarry, Scotland in 1927 in the same house as her father and his father before him. She met a handsome young engineer, John Crichton at a country dance and after 7 years of courtship, they married, had a daughter and made their way across the pond to the Toronto area. Canada welcomed this kind, spirited, Scottish lady and her family in 1959. They were fortunate to enjoy a full and prosperous life together until John's untimely death in 1986, shortly after their retirement. May continued to remain engaged with her family, bringing love and good humour to their lives, and punctuated her retirement years with travel until her declining health required her to change her lifestyle. Memorial services will be held for friends and family at a later date. In her memory, for those who may wish to do so, please make a donation to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation. BOND, George W. - 85, of Medfield, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Medway Country Manor Nursing Home in Medway. He was the husband of Beverly (Parker) Bond. George was born and raised in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Cora and Benjamin Bond. In 1946 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick. Until the end of World War II, he trained as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers. George's career in engineering and management included several Plant Manager assignments in Quebec, Ontario and Illinois. In 1975, his final manufacturing assignment at GAF Materials in Millis brought George and Beverly to their home in Medfield, Massachusetts. After he retired from manufacturing, George and Beverly continued to stay professionally involved with their real estate investments. George had been active in the communities in which he lived. George is missed and fondly remembered by his wife Beverly, his daughters Charlotte and Deborah, his sons Trace and Chris, and all of their families including eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is survived by William (Bill) Clark; her mother, Geraldine (Julie) Rask; brothers: Ray (Kathy) Rask, and Rodney (Barbara) Rask; her sister Susanne LeVoir; several nieces and nephews: Shawn (Dee), Ryan (Sherri), Logan, Devon, Eric, Kaitlyn, Aaron (Christine), Carrie (Mike); two grandchildren, Damien and Emily; aunt Bev and uncle Al Karila, and family in B.C.; numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. Dallas was predeceased by her father Lars; grandparents: George and Mildred Karila, and Hilding and Kathleen Rask; her sister Debra Joy Stark; and brother-in-law Bob Stark. Cremation has taken place and Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20th, in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service. Interment will take place at a later date. DOUGHTY, Josie 2009-01-17 Funeral Service for the late Josie Doughty, who passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2009, was held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 with Pastor Matthew Diegel officiating. Josie will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 58 years, Ron; son Jim (Donna); brother-in-law Ed (Kay) Wilson and family in Kenora whom Josie loved dearly. “Gramma Josie” will be greatly missed by “grandchildren” Jeff, Shannon and Kristy. She was predeceased by her daughter Lynn; parents Henry and Tilly Loos; brothers Stan and William Loos and sister Madeline Dorota. Josie and Ron enjoyed their times at Dog Lake with their family, and travelling together to many destinations, including: RV trips to Arizona, Texas, Victoria, Sarnia, Duluth, and Kenora. Other trips they enjoyed were Mexico and Venezuela. Jim was also included in some of these trips. The family wishes to thank Mary Jo Dool for the touching eulogy, special thanks to the pallbearers: nephew Frank Dorota, Russell Cronk, Carl Maki, and Larry Germaniuk. Beloved son of Betty Gorc (Coulombe) and the late Louis Gorc. Caring brother of Marlene (Tony Simpkin), Wayne of Sudbury and Jo-Ann (Steven Hill) of Calgary Alberta. Proud uncle of Matthew and Victoria Hill. Lovingly remembered by many uncles, aunts and cousins in both Canada and Slovenija. After graduating from Queen's University Dennis made his home in British Columbia and started his career as a geologist. Dennis was a soft spoken, gentle and compassionate man with a wonderful smile. He was a great listener and always had an encouraging word. He had a special way of showing you he cared deeply. Dennis was a generous friend to many and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. BATES, David Windsor. The death of David Windsor Bates of Saint John, NB, occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in London, England on January 22, 1933 he was a son of the late John Seaman and Ruby (Windsor) Bates. David had worked as an engineer with the Rothesay Pulp and Paper Co and then pursued his consulting career in Montreal, Quebec and Alabama. Dave moved back to the Maritimes after his retirement in 2002. Dave is survived by his daughter, Susan Bates-Lapointe (Frank) of Olathe, Kansas, USA; two grandchildren, Karli and Brad; a cousin, Ida Morris; and a friend, Jenny Klausen. Arrangements were under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424, Funeral Service was held from Brenan's Chapel on Sunday, January 11, 2009. ADLER, Hyman. Passed away in his ninety-third year peacefully at his home in Kelowna, B.C. with his beloved wife Diane at his side on January 10, 2009. He leaves behind two daughters, Beverly Kirkham of San Dimas, California and Lois Krupka, Montreal, four grandchildren in California and Montreal and three great-grandchildren. Hyman was fortunate in many ways having led a healthy and full life. He will be fondly remembered for his way with people, the great sense of humour he had and the common touch that made him so special. He was very fortunate to his last breath to still have a wonderful memory, hearing and eye site, not to miss a pretty caregiver at his side and to joke and still show his sense of humour and dignity.
