HADDON, George E. - Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7th, 2009 at the Belleville General Hospital in his 83rd year. George courageously served his country for 37 years in WWII, Peace keeping in Cypress & The British Army. Beloved Husband to Joan Haddon of 51 years. Loving Father of Karen Fisher (Ray) of England & Paul Haddon of England. Predeceased by Daughter Donna Haddon. George will be sadly missed by all that knew him. THERIAULT, Peter Arthur Richard (Rick) September 8, 1955 - January 4, 2009 It is with a profound sense of loss and sadness that we tell you of Rick's passing at the age of 53 on January 4. Memories of their all too short life together will be cherished by his loving devoted wife and soulmate, Holly; his children Paul, Milly and Joe (their mother Dawn) as well as Holly's children, Jessica and Adam. Rick's mother, Norma, his father, Art along with his siblings Stephen (Colleen), Lynn (John), Mark (Candy), Lisa (Darren) and Aaron (Renee) in New Brunswick and Roger (Alex) here in Calgary will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. He was a thoughtful and caring uncle and will be missed by Alex, Connor, Mel, Mike, Vanessa, Zack, Brandon and Lucas. His brother Brian predeceased Rick, in 2004. Numerous family, friends and colleagues from coast to coast will miss his company immensely. A celebration of Rick's life will be held at Lester B. PERKINS, Roger G.- January 2, 2009 - After a nearly three-year struggle with cancer, he passed on quietly, in the company of close friends, without pain, at his home in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Roger was a man of honour, a man of faith, a man of many talents and of great integrity. He viewed death as part of the adventure of living and approached it with grace and little fear. He will be missed by a very large circle of friends from his church community at Grace United, NOTL; from The Evergreen Singers, a choir he founded and directed; from Chorus Niagara with which he sang in recent years; and by his many friends from the theatre and arts communities in which he worked, across the country. He was pre-deceased by his brother Kenneth, his sister Marilyn, and his partner of 25 years, Robert Benson. He is mourned by his extended family including cousins in Ontario; a sister-in-law, niece and nephew in B.C., and many dear friends both in Niagara, Calgary, and across the land. Born to Erma and Jack Perkins, in 1940 in Toronto, Roger grew up there and in Calgary; served as national president of the Student Christian Movement in the 60's; studied for a Masters in psychology at the University of Calgary; then followed a career in music, which saw him working for numerous Canadian theatres including the Shaw Festival where he as director of music for several years, Stratford Festival, and many others. He was a singing coach to innumerable theatre artists, accompanied hundreds of singers over the years and was a great inspiration in the field of choral music for many - both as conductor and singer. Particular thanks go the remarkable core group of friends who supported him during the last three years and especially in the last few weeks when they provided 24 hour care at his home. Thanks also to the doctors and home care providers who formed part of the team, especially to nurse Nancy Solohub. With their help, love, and constant attention Roger was allowed to die in his new home, as he wished. He would want all who knew him to celebrate his crossing over by practicing random acts of kindness toward one another and treasuring every moment of life on the earth. Mr. Scott G. Arsenault February 7, 1921 - December 30, 2008 ARSENAULT, Scott G. "Scottie" It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather on December 30, 2008, in Maplestone Enhanced Care, Fairview at the young age of 87 years. Born February 7, 1921, in Amherst, he was a son of the late Joseph and Francis (Perry) Arsenault. Scottie lied about his age and ran off to join the Prince Edward Island Highlanders of the Canadian Army serving overseas in the United Kingdom and Central Mediterranean Area until the end of the war. He received the Italy Star -1939/45 star- Defense Medal C.V.S.M. & Clasp. After the war, he stayed in England where he met and married the love of his life, Caroline Shannly. They went on to have four children, daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Howard Irwin); sons, Bill (Alison), Scott Jr. (Terri-Lee) and Joseph (Cheryl). After coming home to Canada in 1958, and after struggling to find work, he finely landed a job at HMC Dockyard and got his ticket working in the Boiler Shop where he stayed for 20 years before retiring due to injuries sustained during the war. He is survived by sisters, Elizabeth (Starr), Kathleen (Mrs. Bob Mercer); eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife of 61 years, Caroline; sisters, Nina and Patsy; brothers Alex, Charlie, Walter, Henry and Robert. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #95, Bedford, having acted as Sergeant At Arms for at least two terms. He was also a driving force behind the establishing of the Royal Canadian Legion in Mount Uniacke. He was a member of the West Novies and The Old Downsview A.B.C. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially all the shoppers he "unofficially greeted in the old K-Mart/Wal-Mart in Downsview Mall. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville, where visitation will be today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a Legion service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009 in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Father Zachary Romanowsky officiating. TROVAS, Paul. 1914-2009. It is with deepest sadness and love that we announce the peaceful passing of Paul Trovas on January 4, 2009, with his family by his side. He is survived by Dora, his loving wife of sixty-one years. Beloved father of George (Dee Dee) and Athena (Fotis). Cherished and adored grandfather of Paul (Kristin), Doree, Georgia, Erika, and Nick. Great-grandfather to new baby George. Will be missed by friends and extended family in Greece and Waterloo, Iowa. He was a spirited, proud, and loving man and all those he touched throughout his long and happy life will feel the loss of his presence. Rest in peace, Papou. BECKWITH, John Roy June 8, 1947 - December 26, 2008 John Roy Beckwith, beloved husband of Judy of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2008 at the age of 61 years. Born in Winnipeg, John moved to Calgary with his family as a young child and remained there until his passing. He spent the majority of his life working in the printing industry. John most enjoyed spending his spare time either on his front step or around a roaring fire with those closest to him and was always willing to lend a hand to help out his friends. Besides his loving wife Judy, John is also survived by his daughter Dawn Marie; his sister Marie Heikkila (Vic and Ashley); numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as his close friends, neighbours and co-workers. John was predeceased by his parents Emma and Thomas Beckwith and in-laws Dave and Ruby Penner. GOLDEN, Dorothy "Jean" Passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2008 in Penticton, B.C. at the age of 87 years. Jean will be greatly missed by daughters, Linda Dawne Taylor (Kamloops) and Leslie Gayle Thompson (Calgary); grandson Jonathan Paul Thompson (Calgary); sister-in-law Marion Scott (Mount Albert, Ontario) and Elizabeth Pike (Edmonton) and their families. Predeceased by her husband of sixty-four years, Albert on February 9, 2008; her brother Bob Scott in 1991 and her parents Clara and Robert Scott. Jean was born in Toronto on November 4, 1921 and completed all her education there. In 1943 she married Albert Golden and moved west in 1945 while Al finished university. In 1946 they moved to Calgary and in 1980 retired to their dream home near Okanagan Falls, B.C. Jean was a woman of great faith and was active in the United Church all her life, most recently with the Okanagan Falls United Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Penticton Shrine Club. Jean loved being a mother and grandmother, and derived her greatest pleasure from her family. She will be missed and remembered for her caring ways and unselfish nature. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson's Association of B.C. or the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada. MUNROE, Mervin Elmer April 1, 1930 - January 5, 2009 It is with sadness that the family of Merv Munroe announce his passing on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Merv was born in Cereal, AB and raised in Oyen, AB. He retired from Nova Corporation after thirty-one years of service. He and Kay enjoyed their retirement years, spending winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Throughout his life Merv was active in the Masons, Kinsmen K40 and Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 285. He will be greatly missed by many friends and family. Merv passed away peacefully from cancer with his beloved wife Kay at his side. They were blessed with fifty-eight years of marriage, three sons, Kevin (Ruth), Cameron (Helen) and Greg; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Merv will be remembered by all of them as well as his brother Allan (Gwen) and many nieces and nephews. Merv was predeceased by his parents Annie and Howard; brother Ken; and sister Connie. REID, Arthur "Art" Murray Alexander March 27, 1946 - January 1, 2009 On January 1, 2009, Art Reid of Edmonton passed away peacefully after a brief illness in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 62 years. Art is survived by his wife, Emilie Reid; daughter, Lisa (Shane) Parker and son, Rachied (Andria); grandchildren, Alexandra, Elise, Reid, Carys, Ryder, Parker, Kyle, Blake; brothers and sister, Jack (Margaret), Bob (Kathy), Don (Carolee) and Margaret (Robert) Tew as well as a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Moe (Darlene) Hamdon, Jeannette (Gerry) Russell and Faye (Jim) Morrison; mother-in-law, Josephine Hamdon and numerous other relatives and friends. Art was predeceased by his father, John Guthrie and mother, Evelyn Gertrude. A spirited entrepreneur who founded Reid Built Homes in 1982. VRKLJAN, Ella (nee Menge) January 14, 1935 - January 2, 2009 Ella peacefully passed into eternal rest on Friday, January 2, 2009 at the age of 73. Ella was predeceased by her husband, Michael Vrkljan in 2001, and her brother Waldemar Menge in 2008. She is lovingly remembered by her children, David, Linda, John and Dan, and is also survived by her sisters Erna Hintze, and Alma Will, her brother Helmut Menge (Linda) and several nieces and nephews. Ella was born in Borodino, Romania in 1935, the third daughter of Daniel and Luise Menge. The family immigrated to Canada in 1956 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba before moving to Calgary. Ella had a great love for nature, the outdoors, hiking in the mountains, and music of all kinds. She had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and could always be found in the library. Ella was known best for her gregarious laugh, optimistic attitude in life, and loved being around people. WATSON, Emma Louise (nee Shoen) Emma Louise Watson passed away peacefully at her home on January 1, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Emma "Toots" is lovingly remembered by her four sons, Clarke (Diane), Don (Moira), David (Irene) and Cameron. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; her sister Peg (Don) Pierce of North Saanich, and her brother John (Fran) Shoen of Saskatoon. Emma was predeceased by her husband of fifty-six years (1996) Clarke, mother Olga Willomena, father Otto Emil and brothers Herman, Emil, Ernie and Max. Emma "Toots" was born 1919 in Bruno, Saskatchewan. Early in her life the family moved to Saskatoon, where she fostered her love of music, cooking, sewing and speed skating. She met Clarke in the mid 1930's and they married in 1940. From 1940 to 1945 they lived in Ontario as Clarke was in the RCAF, back to Saskatoon and in 1950 after the third son was born, the family moved to Renfrew district in Calgary. In 1962, with four sons we moved to the Brentwood district where, as Mom would tell others, "We raised four fine sons." Her love of the Chestermere Lake cabin and her family were her inspiration. She got her last wish and passed peacefully in her own home, in her own bed. BROUGH, Helen - It is with sadness that the family of Mrs. Helen Brough announces her passing on December 31, 2008 at Extendicare Kirkland Lake at the age of 83 years. Helen was predeceased by her husband Robert Brough; parents Agnes and Stanley Kensy; sister Cecilia Ratza; brothers Leo and Ben Kensy and sister in law Marjorie Brown. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Jacqueline (Marcel) Desjardins and Robbie (Lorrie) Brough; grandchildren Shawn Desjardins, Robert and Brandon Brough; sister in law Shirley (Glen) Lauzon; brother in law Ron Brown as well as many nieces and nephews.
