STROUD, Shirley Marion (Shaw) - May 17, 1924 - May 7, 2008 - Passed away peacefully at Cassellholme in North Bay, ON with family at her side on May 7, 2008. Predeceased by her beloved husband Chip. She will be forever missed by her children: Jan, Debby and Marcy of North Bay; Guye (Suzanne), Raleigh, N.C; Jill (Ted), Highgate, ON; and Rod (Shireen), Inverary, ON. Bam leaves behind many fond and precious memories for her grandchildren: Major Tom Harper (UK), Troy, Kailin, Chip, Geoffrey, Molly, Kathleen, Jesse, Hilary, Holly, Adam, Krista, Brian and Lindsay and her great grandson Maxwell George (UK). Born and raised in Toronto, Shirley attended Humberside Collegiate. She excelled in athletics, especially swimming. Musically gifted, she sang professionally in her younger years and she loved to play the piano. Shirley graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Oshawa General Hospital in 1947. She nursed for many years at the Civic and St. Joe's Hospitals in North Bay. Patient care was always her passion. She was known for her caring and compassion throughout her life. A woman of great spirit and adventure, Shirley enjoyed the outdoors and willingly indulged and followed her beloved Chip's passion for hunting, fishing, dogs and canoeing. She and Chip were founding members of the North Bay and District Retriever Club. Shirley lived her life with dignity and grace, always admonishing her children to “love one another“. Special thanks to Katherine and all her staff on the third floor, Cassellhome. Our family is especially appreciative of the many kindnesses shown to our mother by Nurse Gail. MILLER, Zella Scholfield Zella Scholfield Miller passed away at the Carewest George Boyack on April 27, 2008. She was 93 years old. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 8, 1915, Zella was one of five children of Mattie and Edward Rathbone. Zella was raised and educated in Winnipeg and lived most of her life there surrounded by family and friends. She was courted by Grant Miller, a handsome, adventurous young man whom she met at a Winnipeg rifle range. Upon Grant's return from World War II, they married and raised a family. Her sons, Glenn and Dennis, grew up in a close family and shared many happy times with relatives across the country. Although Zella's sons moved to Alberta in the 1970's and Grant passed away in 1991, her ties to Winnipeg and the friendships she had maintained since girlhood kept her there for many years. Despite suffering from numerous chronic ailments, Zella was a resilient person who always looked to the future. In 2004, just four months before her ninetieth birthday, Zella, in a characteristic move, decided the time had come to move to Calgary in order to be closer to her family. She became a resident of the Fountains of Mission and created a new life in Alberta. She made new friends, took computer courses, went on field trips and generally enjoyed her life here while still maintaining contact with family and friends across the country. Zella appreciated the regular visits and communication she was able to have with her sister Vivian and family who also live in Calgary. Zella was predeceased by her brothers Ernie, Otis and Jim and her husband Grant. She is survived by sons, Glenn and Dennis, their wives, Christine and Laurette and grandchildren, Alex (Tara), Lindsey, Stewart, Robin and Ian, sister Vivian Bradfield and family, and numerous nephews and nieces across Canada. The family would like to express our thanks to the staff of the Carewest George Boyack for their kindness and compassion during Zella's final months. TRIPARGOLETTI, Maria 2008-05-08 Mrs. Maria Tripargoletti age 77 years of Winnipeg Avenue passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with cancer at St. Joseph‘s Hospice on Wednesday, May 7th 2008. Born December 28th, 1930 in Paterno Calabro, Cosenza, Italy. On October 18th, 1952 she immigrated to Port Arthur to seek a better life and to be reunited with the love of her life, Pasquale. On January 24th, 1953 they were married and worked together in order to better provide for their future. Maria worked at Feros Restaurant followed by the Hodder Avenue Hotel, Nor-Shore Motor Hotel, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and for the City of Thunder Bay Home for the Aged up until retirement in 1993. Hard work, determination and faith were only a few of the characteristics that made Maria a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, among many other things. There was no better pastime for Maria than to cook and provide for her family and friends. She was happiest when busy preparing for each and every person who walked through the front door. Maria was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends, whether it was when making cultural foods, garden preserves, or any of the many other delicacies she shared with everyone she could. Survived by daughter Anna and son-in-law Frank Tropea, daughter Elena and son-in-law Bruno Di Gregorio, four grandchildren Vince (Luigina) and Frank (Kailey) Tropea, and Agnes-Maria (fiancé Doug Diebel) and Maria-Tina Di Gregorio and three great grandchildren Michayla, Olivia and Luka Tropea. Also surviving is sister Giulia Divoto of Belguim, brother Carmen (Clara) Ceci of Thunder Bay, Salvatore (Lina) Ceci of Italy, brother Guiseppe (Clara) Ceci of Belguim, sister Carmela Felice of Thunder Bay and brother Ermanno (Maria) Ceci of Thunder Bay. Also surviving is sisters-in-law Adelina of Thunder Bay, and two sisters Angelina Tripargoletti and Antonietta Salvador in Italy. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband Pasquale Tripargoletti, parents Filippo and Angelina Ceci as well as several brothers and sisters. CORNELL, Rodney Albert - Born February 23, 1948, on Washington Island, Wisconsin to Byron and Charlotte. He is survived by his wife Eileen (nee Pinnegar), children Kathleen, Meghann Haertig (Chris), Joseph, Aaron, Caleb and Christian, sisters Everall Jorgenson, Beth Robison and Glenna Riewe, mother-in-law Marjorie Pinnegar, and many nieces and nephews. Those who preceded him in death include: Byron and Charlotte Cornell (parents), Gilmore Cornell (brother) and Earl Pinnegar (father-in-law). Rodney and Eileen lived just north of Markdale from 1978 to 1986. Rodney died peacefully surrounded by his wife and children in his own home on April 6, 2008. MARKLAND, Bruce E.D. - At the Kingston General Hospital on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Bruce Everette Douglas Markland of Elgin at age 35. Cherished son of Cheryl Markland and the late George Markland. Beloved husband of Jennifer (Burtch) and dear father of Elijah (8) and Julian (7). Dear brother of George and Sherry Littlefield (Greg) of Kingston. Son-in-law of Meta Burtch and Shari Burtch (late Wayne) of Elgin. Brother- in-law of Tabatha; Jeffrey (Marleenia); Richard and Danny. Uncle of Sierra; McKenzie; Abbie; Chloe; Mikila and Desarae. BOYD, Harold Thomas - Quietly, at Parkwood Hospital, following a long illness, on Sunday, May 4, 2008, in his 80th year. Much beloved husband of the late Maxine Boyd. Cherished Dad to Peter Boyd (Janet), Susan Allen (Jim Richardson), Mark Allen (Sara), and Gary Allen. Awesome Grampa/Papa to Laura and Jordon Boyd, Sarah and Laura Richardson, and Samantha Allen. MARRABLE, Jack Nelson October 18, 1920 - May 5, 2008 In his 88th year, peacefully in his sleep at Helen Henderson Nursing Home. Jack was a friend to all and always had time to meet you at any Tim Horton's in Kingston for a coffee, as long as you bought. Jack was an avid Pilot and built and flew his own airplane. His face and black baseball cap were a common fixture around The Kingston Flying Club and Norman Rogers Airport. In his own words, he came to Canada and Started with nothing but did all right. During World War II he was stationed at CFB Kingston as a motorcycle instructor and mechanic. The Best Job in the World so he said on many occasions. Even at 80 years old he could still re-wire an old BSA from memory and get it running. During his lifetime he owned and operated many businesses but his two proudest accomplishments were his Harley-Davidson and Mercedes-Benz dealerships. He was an avid supporter of the local 58 Air Cadet Squardon and rarely missed an Annual Inspection or Remembrance Day ceremony. Jack will be sadly missed by his many friends, but like he said time to go home to be with Old Dan which was his dog and companion for many years. CHAMBERLAIN, Donald Edward (Babe) December 24, 1931 - May 5, 2008 Donald Edward Chamberlain, beloved husband of Florence for fifty-two years, of Calgary, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was born in Campbellton, NB, and married Florence on May 21, 1956. They moved to Montreal where Don worked for Northern Telecom until he retired in 1991. In 1997 Don and Florence moved to Calgary to be closer to family. Throughout his life, Don was a responsible, loving man who had incredible integrity. Don is also survived by his daughter Terry (Peter Wallis); his son Michael; two granddaughters Laura and Jennifer; two step-grandchildren Lindsay (Jason) and Brian; his brother Maurice; Frederic Tassin; and many relatives and friends across Canada. FORSTER, Cdr (retd) Edward (Ted) Ralph For he maketh the storm to cease; so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they are at rest; and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be. It is with the greatest sadness that the family of Ted Forster announces his death in Ottawa on May 6th, 2008. Beloved husband of the late June (nee Dey) and of Janet Thorsteinson. Loving Dad of Andrew and David (Leslie Sutherland) and grandfather of Kalen and Melanie June. Dearest brother of Dorothy Caw and the late Edith Buck and loving uncle of their sons John Caw (Jackie) and Bobby Buck (Susie) and many great nieces and great nephews. Much loved by Janet's sister Jennie and Jennie's daughter Kristina. During WWII, Ted served in the Royal Navy repairing Merlin Engines at Coimbatore South India and, after the war, worked on the Berlin Airlift before joining the Royal Canadian Navy where he served in HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure. After retiring from the Navy, he was the Coordinator of the DND Energy Program and the Contracts Dispute Office from which he retired in 1985 to go sailing with June, in Aries III. Later, he was content to travel in freighters to South Africa, Australia and Norway, with Janet. He was never happier than when at sea. For those who cared for Ted with respect and compassion during his illness, we express our gratitude. Memorial service at the Church of St. Bartholomew, 125 MacKay Street, Ottawa at 1300, Friday, May 9th. Followed by a gathering at 1430 at HMCS Bytown, the Navy Mess on Lisgar. KADZIORA, Max. M.D. 1921 - 2008 It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Max Kadziora on the 30th of April, 2008. He leaves his beloved wife of forty years, and co-worker, Helene; sister Erika Kadziora; and stepdaughter Susan Adams and Clive Titmuss of Kelowna. Max was pre-deceased by his sister Charlotte Mannsparth of Vienna, and his mother and father-in-law Juliette and Albert Hebert of Victoria. He died at home with Helene and Erika by his side. Dr. Kadziora was born in Vienna, Austria on May 5, 1921. He took his medical training at the Universities of Vienna, Freiburg and Strasbourg, obtaining his medical doctorate at the Medical Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1948. He interned in Germany for two and a half years in medicine, two years in surgery, and one and a half years in bacteriology and serology. He immigrated to Canada in 1953, and subsequently interned at the Reddy Memorial Hospital in Montreal and the Civic Hospital in Ottawa. He obtained specialty qualifications in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1964, and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1972. His appointments were: active staff, Civic Hospital, Ottawa, 1957 - 1976; active staff, Grace Hospital, Ottawa, 1957 - 1982; lecturer at University of Ottawa, 1958 - 1982; Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Grace Hospital, Ottawa, 1965 - 1970; Chief of Staff, Grace Hospital, Ottawa, 1970 - 1976; and consultant in Sexual Medicine at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, 1982 - 1998. During his time as Chief of Staff at the Grace Hospital, Max pioneered the use of laser technology and micro-surgery in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. He practised sexual medicine and sexual therapy with his wife Helene as co-therapist, using the Masters and Johnson technique (AASECT, Washington, D.C.) from 1969 to 1998. They appeared on radio and television, and lectured at many hospitals in Ontario and British Columbia. After moving to Victoria, they established an office twenty-six years ago, with a practice in office gynaecology and sexual medicine. Max was a prolific artist, three times winning first prize in Horner's Physicians' Art Salon. His love of beauty and reverence for life were evident in his fine watercolour paintings. We extend special thanks to family doctor and friend, Dr. David Mier, The Kidney Clinic, nurses and doctors at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and Hospice Palliative Care. OBITUARY ROSS N. SMITH It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ross Smith on Saturday, May 3, 2008. At the age of eighty, Ross gently slipped away with his family beside him. Ross was the cherished husband, soul-mate and dearest friend of Wendy, beloved and proud father of Lynne (Robert Jenkins) and Roslyn. He was predeceased by his first wife Paula (nee Jolicoeur) and his parents Harry and Dorothy Smith. Ross died as he lived, with courage and dignity. This wonderful, fun loving man was renowned for his good humour and generosity of spirit which stayed with him until the end. He will be remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends throughout the world. Ross enjoyed a long and successful career in advertising and motivational speaking. For many years he loved riding his horse with his friends at the Caledon Riding and Hunt Club. Since his retirement from business Ross was fortunate to lead a very active life. Ross and Wendy spent their winters in Florida, so that they could pursue their love of tennis and keep active year round. The rest of the year was spent between Canada and England and travels in Europe. In accordance with his wishes, Ross has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, at 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto (2 stop lights west of Yonge St.). Heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital who cared for Ross with compassion and untiring dedication. SLATER, Madeline Dora (nee Simonin) August 3, 1926 - May 3, 2008 Madeline Dora Slater of Airdrie, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Madeline was born in Cluny, AB on August 3, 1926 and grew up in Bassano, AB. She married in Victoria, BC and raised her family in Calgary. Madeline has resided in Airdrie for McINNIS &the past twenty-seven years and was an active member of the CWL. She spent many years volunteering for Meals on Wheels, the Bethany Care Centre, and many other organizations. Madeline retired from Canada Post after more than twenty years of service in November 1990. She was a smart and independent person who was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Madeline is survived by her family, son Richard (Barbara) Slater; daughter Sharon Slater; son-in-law Doug Anderson; sister Louise (Reg) Ell; brother Ray (Carol) Simonin; five grandchildren, Shawn (Pam) Slater, Trevor (Lynn) Slater, Jason (Madelle) Anderson, Jacquelyn (Marc) Laflamme, and Dale Anderson; and seven great-grandchildren, Micaela, Rebecca, Tristen, Jahson, Rahdel, Alahkin and Nazareth. TAIT, Sarah "Sally" January 15, 1931 - May 5, 2008 Sarah "Sally" Tait of Calgary, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the age of 77 years. Sally immigrated to Calgary from Greenock, Scotland in June 1969 with her husband and family in the hopes of a better life for her children. She was a very compassionate person and would always stand up for others in need. Sally loved to knit and going to bingo especially with her two daughters and son Brian. Sally is lovingly remembered by her children, John (Debbie) Tait, Geraldine Tait, Rosemary (Keith) Gillanders, Stewart Tait, Peter Tait, and Brian Tait; grandchildren, Samantha, Scott and Sebastian. She is also survived by her brother Tommy (Marjorie) Stanton in Scotland; sister-in-law Florrie Hankin of Vancouver; special niece Cathy Pyefinch also in Scotland; as well as several other nieces, nephews and extended family in Scotland and Canada. She was predeceased by her mother Katie Stanton and father Thomas Stanton; and sister Mary; and her husband John Tait.
