SPULER STRICKLER, Arturo Arturo Spuler Strickler, beloved husband of Gumercinda Spuler of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the age of 79 years. Arturo will be lovingly remembered by his children, Arturo (Cristina) of Calgary, Veronica (Waldo) of Calgary, Mauricio (Jimena) of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Oriana of Vina del Mar, Chile, Monica (Mike) of Calgary and Oscar (Renee) of Chestermere; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren as well as his twin sister Helena of Santiago, Chile. KENNEDY, Mrs. Virginia Ann - It is with deepest love and gratitude that we announce the quiet and peaceful passing of Virginia Ann Kennedy (nee Fox), at home, on Monday, 5 May 2008, after a lengthy and courageous struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Beloved Wife of Donald A. Kennedy, cherished Mother of Lynn Kennedy, much loved Gramma to Sarah Masterman-Lees (James Lees) of Cam, England, Ian Masterman of Dundas, and Bryce Masterman (fiancée Sarah Krompart) of Toronto. Virginia will be dearly missed by her husband Don, whom she married in October, 1952. They shared a strong and loving bond throughout their decades together, spending many happy times boating on Lake Erie, including excursions along the Niagara River, and into the Finger Lakes and other points of interest. They lovingly and conscientiously took care of their home, enjoying each other's company, and the birds and animals that populated their yard throughout the changing seasons. Born in Welland on 9 November 1930, my mom was known to many of her young friends as 'Ginny.' She attended high school in Welland, completing her studies at Alma College in St. Thomas, Ontario, where she made fast friends with a number of her fellow students, maintaining life-long correspondence with a few of those she met during her time there. Following graduation she worked for Welland Hydro, as well as E. S. Fox Plumbing and Heating, before becoming a full time homemaker, and, eventually, with the same entrepreneurial spirit in which she was raised, became owner and landlady of Forest Row Apartments in Port Colborne. My mother is predeceased by her father Ted (E. S.) Fox, mother Adah Fox, and brother Eb (Edward) Fox. We would like to thank the many people who helped my mother in recent years, including the compassionate and loving kindness of the paramedic emergency teams who attended her as recently as two weeks ago, the health care teams at the Welland County General Hospital, CCAC Niagara and its affiliates, and, in particular, the wonderful palliative care given to my mother at home by Nurses Jocelyne Molnar and Kim Gatt (Paramed). Many thanks and much appreciation to the skilled and attentive care my mother received from personal support workers Leeann Simones and Sifelani Mzambi (St. Elizabeth's), particularly in her final days, and to Kathy Youngblut for assisting over the past weekend. Thank you to CCAC Case Manager Kelly Karner for orchestrating this fabulous care team, and to Jane Gordon at Hospice Niagara. Finally, special thanks and appreciation go to Dr. Sandra Hartman for guiding us through the final days of my mother's life. Only a prayer away, you are with us now and always. BEEBE, Paul Gray 2008-05-07 Paul Gray Beebe age 87 years left his weary body behind and took flight on May 6, 2008. Paul was born the 9th of February 1921 in Boise, Idaho, moved to Port Arthur, Ontario in 1922 with his family and traveled frequently to the Beebe homestead in Bruce, Wisconsin. In 1939 Paul enlisted with 4th Field Ambulance and was shipped overseas. He saw duty in England, France and Italy. He was wounded in Italy and spent the last of the war in a POW camp outside of Munich, Germany. While in England, he met and married his Irish sweetheart, Mary Chambers. After the war Paul operated a reputable painting and decorating business in Fort William. He was an avid sportsman, a member of the Lakehead Fish & Game Association, the Thunder Bay Revolver Club and Ducks Unlimited. Paul and Mary moved to BC in 1968 where Paul again operated a successful painting and decorating business in Kelowna. He joined Search and Rescue in 1975. He was a member of the Snowmobile Club and helped build the Greystokes Lodge. Always a keen fisherman, he discovered a passion for deep sea fishing and moved to Bowser in 1980 where he lived until his health began to fail in 2004. He has been lovingly looked after by the staff at Brookhaven Care Centre. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Earl and Phyllis Beebe, his sons, Barry in England and Earl in Thunder Bay, his brothers, Eugene, Calvin and Allan. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary, his brothers, Dustin in Thunder Bay and Arnold (Noreen) in Sioux Lookout, sister, Betty (Tom Morben) of 100 Mile House, daughters, Phyll (Al Thompson) and Trish (Allan Andres) of Kelowna and son, Doug (Karen) Beebe of Lethbridge. He is survived by his grandchildren, Ron and Douglas Hann, Michelle McColl, Shannon (Sean) Murphy, Kelly (Carl) Jensen, Will (Irena) Thompson, Dan Wieteska, also grandchildren, Danny (Naomi) Beebe, Clay (Lori) Beebe, and Bradley Beebe, and their mother Jean Beebe. No service at this time. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in a family plot in Thunder Bay. Donations in Paul‘s memory can be made to the Kelowna Search and Rescue Association. LINKLATER, Harold Fraser - Harold Fraser Linklater was born on October 1, 1917 in Teeswater Ontario to Harvey and Gladys (nee Mason Fraser) Linklater. He was the oldest of three brothers. Until his death all four of them were still living - I'm sure that is a record for four brothers who had survived WW II. Harold died at 90 and all his brothers are in their 80s. His great- grandparents arrived in Canada from the Orkneys in Scotland in 1852 and some of his great-uncles had come to Canada with the Hudson's Bay Company. The family moved to Kincardine in August 1929 when his father Harvey bought the furniture store and funeral home from W.H.A. Morrison. He worked helping his father from age 12, but really started that career in 1935 when he finished Grade 12. In 1937-38 he took courses at the Banting Institute and General Hospital in Toronto. At 19 he got his license as an undertaker but couldn't use it until he was 21. He married Nora Elizabeth Dimond on November 20 1940. In May 1940 he had joined the Canadian army. He went into Officer training in Brockville and between 1940 to 1943 he was stationed in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. In WW II he went overseas in June 1944 before the invasion of France and stayed there until the fall of 1946. He was in the 19th Self- Propelled Regiment. He was a Captain by the time the war ended. His daughter Elizabeth Ann was born in 1949 and son John Douglas in 1951. He was a Rover Scout and became a cub and scout leader. He was on the Kincardine Public School Board for 10 years, belonged to the Rotary Club, the Kinsmen, the Masonic Lodge and was president of the Chamber of Commerce for two years and received an award. In 1970 he was chairman of the Old Boy's and Girls Reunion Committee and won the award of Citizen of the Year. He cherished the silver tray that he was given to him with that inscription. The award was reported in the London Free Press. Ballots were received from as far away as Michigan and from across the province. It was the largest number of ballots at that time and 70 percent voted for him. His pride and joy was the cottage he built on Crab Cove near Red Bay. He bought the lakefront property in 1952 for $350 and in 1953 he and his neighbour Ed Hagedorn put up the frame. He worked both at the Linklater Funeral Home and the Linklater Furniture Store. From 1966 to 1974 he owned and operated the funeral business by himself. In 1974 at age 57 he sold the Funeral business although he helped the new owner in the summers for 4-5 years afterwards. In 1974 he and Nora bought a place in Lakeland Florida and started going there in the winters in 1975. Nora died on his birthday, October 1, 1988 after a 48-year marriage. He married Helen Emma Hayes (nee Coulson) of St. Thomas and Lakeland Florida on July 22 1989. He and Helen lived at the cottage until September 2000 and in Owen Sound since then. They wintered in Lakeland until 1995 when Harold got cancer of the jaw. He survived that as he did a heart attack, strokes, blindness, and several operations. He was tenacious and had a tremendous will to live through all of these ailments until April 2008 when he accepted he was failing. Perhaps being a funeral director had given him this will to live because he had to live with death around him for so many years. Harold is survived by his beloved wife Helen, his daughter Elizabeth (Liza) and her husband James Trottier of Manila, Philippines, his son Douglas (Doug) of Red Bay, his grand- children Jesse and Dane of Barrie, his brothers Ken (and Reita) of Kincardine, Bryce (and Alma) of Jarvis and Gordon (and Joan) of Toronto, and his former daughter- in-law, Dianne Linklater of Kincardine; his step-family Helen (and Bert) Wray of Durham and their children Marla (and Lee) Zwolman of Milton, Kevin and David Wray; and to Marg Nichol (and Gerald) of Brampton, Donald Findlay (and Teresa) of Campbell River, B.C. and William Findlay (and Gazelle) of Winnipeg; as well as everyone's children and many grandchildren, great- and great-great- grandchildren. Heartfelt thanks and affection are extended to dearest Helen, Helen and Bert Wray of Durham, Fern and Ken Fynn, Linda Crandall and Ab Lipsett and Mary van Trigt, all of Owen Sound for their loving care and assistance over the last years. A memorial service took place on Monday May 5 at the Kincardine cemetery and was followed by a reception at Knox Presbyterian Church. RASBERRY, Doris. It is with love and sadness that the family of Doris Sophia Taylor Rasberry announce her passing. She died peacefully, surrounded by family on May 5, 2008, after a brief illness. She is survived by her children Bill (Ev) and Gail (Alec) and the grandchildren of whom she was so proud: Meredith, Robin, Libby, Jordan, Taylor and John. She is survived by her sister Marjorie West as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Laurie in August 2006. COOK, Margaret "Pearl" October 12, 1916 - May 2, 2008 Margaret "Pearl" Cook, born in Fernie, B.C. filled the lives of all who knew her with her self-effacing humour, her strength and grace and her appreciation of what family and friends had to offer. She gave unwavering support to both, and was the matriarch and unwitting leader of her committed family. Her presence will be deeply missed at our traditional family dinners. Pearl, or Pearly, as we affectionately called her was the beloved mother of Mavis, Linda (Jim), Jackie (Andy), Glen (Robin); grandmother to Karri (Randy), Michelle, Stephanie (Rob), Michael (Rosy), Sean (Danial), Rachael (Aaron), Amber (Sean), Ashley (Ryan), Liam and Riley; great-grandmother to Asia, Madelyn, Chase, Zoey, Austin, Jory, Jade, Connor, Anna and Anders. Pearl is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ken and June Whitelaw, and their families, and her sister-in-law Marjorie Post and her family. Pearl was predeceased by her first husband, Jack James, who died in WWII; by her second husband, William Lloyd Cook; and by her cherished younger brother, Jack Whitelaw. TERRIFF, Paul Kincaid October 27, 1938 - May 2, 2008 Paul Kincaid Terriff died peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC on Friday, May 2, 2008. Born on October 27, 1938, in Lethbridge to Joseph and Lillian Terriff, Paul cherished his rural upbringing in Vauxhall, AB with his brother Wayne and sister Lyn. He spoke fondly of learning to swim with his cousins in the dugout, riding ponies, driving trucks and other childhood pursuits. Paul attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, AB, achieving certification as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. In 1963 Paul married Florence D'Arcy, a recreation supervisor for the city of Calgary, formerly from Toronto, ON. They moved to Fort St. John, BC where their first daughter Paula was born in 1964. Back in Calgary in 1966 their second daughter Heather arrived, followed by their son Darcy in 1970. At that time Paul returned to SAIT to work as an instructor in his trade until his retirement in 1995. Paul loved to be with people and was very active in the community. He never shied away from responsibility, whether it was working his way up the ranks in an organization, taking a position on the executive of a club, or helping out with a BBQ or pancake breakfast. He is a past Worshipful Master of Northmount Masonic Lodge and later attended Crossfield Lodge. He joined Florence in Eastern Star and is a Past Worthy Patron of Friendship Chapter No. 125. As a loving and supportive father he was involved in the activities of his children. He is a Past Associate Guardian and Past Associate Grand Guardian of Job's Daughters. When his daughters took up competitive swimming, Paul started timing at meets and went on to be a Master Official at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978. One of his lifelong passions was curling and with his family he enjoyed cross-country skiing, camping and canoeing. Paul and Florence retired to their home near Kootenay Lake, BC in the community of Riondel. Paul continued curling and took up hiking and golfing. He looked forward to visiting with his grandchildren William (born 1996) and Michael (born 1998) deHaan and Alex Flegel (born 2004). Grandpa loved sharing his interests with the boys, teaching them how to golf, fish and work with tools. Paul and Florence travelled often in their motorhome and worked many hours together in their beautiful garden. Paul will be lovingly remembered by Florence, his wife of forty-five years, Paula and Michael Flegel, Heather and Brent deHaan, grandsons William, Michael and Alex, sister and brother-in-law, Lyn and Lorne Kester, sister-in-law Beth Terriff, Florence's family and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Darcy in 1973 and his brother Wayne Terriff in 2007. TAYLOR, VERA "PEGGY" MARGARET - The death of Peggy Taylor, wife of the late Mark Taylor of Smythe Street, Saint John occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. She was born in Henley, England on October 8, 1921 to the late Frederick and Florence (Sanders) Brakspear. Peggy was a veteran of World War II serving in the Air Force. She is member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary Branch #53 of the Royal Canadian Legion and the War Brides Association. After the war, Peggy devoted her time to her family, she was a loving mother and grandmother. In her spare time, she was an avid dart player. Peggy is survived by her seven children, Tony (Anna) Brakspear of Oslo, Norway, James (Molly) Taylor, Richard (Ginette) Taylor, Michael (Lorraine) Taylor, Terri (the late Melvin) Clark, Lynn Taylor, and Mark Taylor all of Saint John, NB; nephew, John Brakspear of England and 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 11:30 AM. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held Thursday during visitation at 7 PM. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery's Field of Honour. A reception will be held at Brenan's Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road following the interment. KINTSCH, Josip. 1918-2008. Josip Kintsch passed away May 4, 2008, in his ninetieth year. Predeceased by his loving wife Katharine (Wolf) Kintsch who passed away May 4, 2005 and predeceased by his three children during World War II. Born in Jabuka, former Yugoslavia, he and his wife came to Canada in 1948. He worked many years at Air Canada before he retired. He and his wife were long time members of the Croatian Catholic Church, St-Nichola Tavelic in Montreal. After his wife's death he came to live with his very close friends Eva and Rudolf Komsic. He will be dearly missed by three nephews in Germany and two nieces in England and relatives in USA. Cherished godfather to Frank and Rudy and sadly missed by Nikola. Fondly remembered by the Komsic family and by many close friends.
