MIKETA, Anne 2008-01-09 Ms. Anne Miketa, aged 88 passed away Monday, January 7th, 2008. Anne was a kind and caring woman whose generosity and devotion to others was fondly felt. She worked hard on the Miketa Farm in Gimli, Manitoba and also at Dresswell Cleaners in Thunder Bay, Ontario, but her true passion was her family. She raised three children of her own, was a proud Nana of 3 grandchildren and most recently boasted about her six great grand children. Anne always commented on how lucky she was to be surrounded by love and family. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Joyce Monteith and all of her other surviving family and friends. Anne was predeceased by her husband Walter Miketa, Son Allen Miketa and her daughter Sylvia Agnew. A reception for Anne will be held on Sunday, January 13th, 2008 in the common room, 925 Simpson St, Assef Court from 1:00 pm - 3:00pm

BENNETT, Irene Francis February 28, 1933 - January 4, 2008 Irene Bennett of Calgary, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2008, after a courageous battle, surrounded by her loving family. Irene was a strong devoted mother and wife who spent her whole life supporting her family. Her favourite past times were fishing, gardening and cross stitching. Irene loved sharing her garden and stitcheries with everyone. Outside the home, Irene worked in the printing industry. Irene is remembered by her three daughters, Sandie Kazakoff (Dexter), Wanda (Dave) Ho Lem and Fran Neal (Lance) as well as six grandchildren, Tanya, Jason, Derick, Krista, Alissa and Kyler. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Ronald Bennett, on October 19, 2007. PURDIE, Harry (Harvey) Maurice July 11, 1930 - January 6, 2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Harry (Harvey) Maurice Purdie announce his passing at the age of 77 years on Sunday, January 6, 2008. Harry was born and raised in Edmonton and has lived in Calgary since 1974. He is survived by his brothers Rev. Jack Purdie (Shirley) of Vancouver and Paul (Susan) of Edmonton, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Grace and her husband Larry Hoffman. We wish to acknowledge the staff and residents of Bow Valley Lodge whose kindness and friendship brightened Harry's last two years despite his failing health. SMITH, Florence "Mildred" (Major) September 6, 1922 - January 8, 2008 Florence "Mildred" Smith, beloved wife of Charley, of Calgary passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 85 years. Mildred was born on September 6, 1922 in Melfort, SK the daughter of the late James and Margaret Bell. She and Charley devoted their lives to serving God as officers in The Salvation Army. Their last appointment was at the Calgary Correctional Centre as Chaplains. Mildred was loved by all who knew her. She was filled with a quiet elegance, grace and beauty, soft speech, brimming over with generosity, and a deep spirituality. Besides her loving husband of sixty-five years, Major Charley Smith, Mildred will be missed by her children Larry (Marilyn) Smith, Linda (Harvey) Smith, Brian Smith, and Betty (Stan) Lockhurst; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mildred will be joining her son Raymond in Heaven. ROSSETTI, Frank 2008-01-09 With his family by his side and a hockey game on TV, Mr. Frank Rossetti passed away at Pinewood Court on Tuesday January 8, 2007 after a long and hard battle with Huntington Disease. Frank was born December 4, 1951 in Fort William to Rocco and Nora Rossetti; whom both passed away when Frank was very young. He was lovingly raised by his brother Carlo, wife May and her parents John and Nellie Andrews. Frank attended St. Ann Elementary School, Westgate CVI and graduated from Confederation College in 1973 with a diploma in Audio Visual Technician Program. In 1979 he became a Certified Engineering Technician. As part of the College Work Placement Program, Frank worked at the Lakehead District Catholic School Board and upon graduation remained with the Board as A.V. Technician until ill health caused him to retire in 1993. In 1974 he married Cheryl (Massaro) and together they had a beautiful daughter Jessica Nicole. Frank was a multi-talented man. He spent summers in Oba with his parents, where he learnt to enjoy the great outdoors. As a teenager he was the drummer in the band "Mixed Breed". After marriage he renovated the family home, worked on his "dune buggy", and many a television in Thunder Bay were repaired by him. The most important part of Frank’s life was his family. He loved spending time outdoors hiking, ski-dooing, camping or dune buggy riding with Jessica. He was a loving person with a smile that lit up a room. Frank fought a long and courageous battle with Huntington’s Disease for 18 years. He never gave up and shared a sense of humour that gave his family strength through a very hard time. Frank was predeceased by his birth parents Nora (Mastrodomenico) and Rocco Rossetti, foster parents John and Nellie Andrews, brothers Henry and Art, sisters Antoinette, Mary and Rita and nephew Daniel Andrews. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, daughter Jessica Nicole (Jason); brother Carlo and sister-in-law May, niece Lisa and great nieces Lauryn and Marissa; brother John, niece Linda, nephew Norman; sister Ann (Lena) Hunter; nephew Lynden Andrews (Diane), niece Laura Turner; aunt Josephine Coran and aunt Mary Daniels; father and mother in law John (Bunny) and Maxine Massaro; brother-in-law John, nephew Brent and Tyler Massaro; close friend Tyler Hogan, and numerous other friends and relatives. REID, RAYMOND The passing of Raymond Reid of Fredericton, NB, husband of the late Maureen LeRoy (Smith) Reid, occurred at the Veteran's Health Unit, Fredericton, NB on January 7, 2008. Born on April 11, 1923 in Belfast, Ireland, he was the son of the late Alfred and Lena (Harvey) Reid Sr. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Tail Gunner stationed in the North West Territories. Raymond retired from District 17 School Board as a "Transportation Officer" for the Province of New Brunswick. Following Raymond's retirement, he was a commissionaire at Government House and the RCMP Barracks, superintendent for Chippin Brothers and General Manager of Wilson's Laundry and Cleaners. Raymond is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Reid of Geary, NB, Cathy Lovely (Danny) of Fredericton, NB; sons, Tom Reid (Cathy), Mike Reid (Sandra) both of Fredericton, NB; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Carr, Amy Nason, Heather Case, Andrew, Joshua and Luke Reid, Katie and Rebecca Lovely; great grandchildren, Samantha and Courtney Nason, Jacob and Sam Morehouse; sister, Marina Hull (Norman) of Millville, NB; brother, Alfred Reid Jr. (Anna) of Millville, NB; several nieces and nephews; special family friend, Robert Boone of Geary, NB. In addition to his parents and wife, Raymond was predeceased by his two infant siblings, Gerald and Anna; brothers, Eric and Ronald. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, January 10, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Service will take place at Greenwood Drive Baptist Church, Fredericton, NB on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 1 pm with Pastor Jeff Benson, Pastor Harold Arbo and Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. FIORINO, Luigi Santo - In loving memory of Luigi Santo Fiorino, 81 years of Sudbury, the family announces with great sorrow the peaceful passing of Luigi, Monday morning January 07, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Dipignano, Cosenza, Italy, and came to Sudbury in 1961. He was blessed with many family, friends, and neighbours while residing in Gatchell and then in New Sudbury. He was a devoted Roman Catholic attending St. Anthony's Church and then St. Andrew the Apostle Church. He was a generous and selfless man who put family and friends above all else and ready to lend a hand at a moments' notice. He was a great man, a man of few words but a man of his word and entegrity. He leaves a legacy of faith, love and strength of character where he shared his wisdom and fruits of his labour with many. He took great pride and delight in his grand and great grand children. He loved nature and enjoyed hunting, gardening, wine making, and was a very competitive bocce and bowling player. Luigi was a constant hard worker, fought over difficult and foreign challenges especially in the last few years, but he was so very happy while attending at the Sudbury Alzheimers Day Program where he received wonderful care and kindness. Luigi worked for Public Works Department at the City of Sudbury, retiring in 1991. Beloved husband of Clementina Fiorino for sixty years. Loving and devoted father of Angela (Mario) Ricci, Elia (Andrea) Lamberti. Cherished grandfather of Cynthia Ricci, Robert (Jamie) Ricci and great- grandfather of Ryan and Mya Ricci, Dan (Ivonne) Lamberti, and great-grandfather of Thaliá and Corrado, and grandfather of Frank of Toronto, and Adriano of Sudbury. Dear son of Gaetano and Angelina Fiorino (predeceased). Survived by sister Valentina (Alfredo, predeceased), sister-in-law Marietta (Pasquale, predeceased) of Sudbury and sister-in-law Yolanda (Giovanni, predeceased) of Italy, brother-in- law Eugenio (Adelina) and Paolo (Maria, predeceased) both of Toronto. HARDING, Janet Eleanor - Janet Eleanor Harding (nee Scott) passed away peacefully on January 6, 2008 at the age of 93 years. Predeceased by parents George and Anna (Keating) Scott and brother Ralph. Lovingly remembered by husband of 62 years Donald, sons John (Frances) and Paul (Colleen) and grandchildren Alison, Kathryn and Malcolm and niece Beverly Scott. Janet was a life-long member of Grace United Church where she sang in the Senior Choir and was Clerk of Session for many years. Family was always the centre of her life and she spent countless hours researching and documenting the family tree. An avid reader, Janet was Librarian at the Gananoque Public Library in the 1930s and served on the Library Board in later years, allowing her to pursue her love of books and reading. According to her wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Grace United Church, Gananoque, on Saturday, January 12th at 2:00 p.m., followed by a service of Christian Burial at the family plot at Gananoque Cemetery. A reception will follow in the downstairs hall at Grace Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet's memory to the charity of your choice - dear to Janet's heart were the Gananoque Public Library, Grace United Church Choir and the Canadian Hearing Society. In recent years, Janet and her family have taken great comfort from the gentle, caring and competent health care she was privileged to receive from Doctor Arawn Therrien. The last several months have been made happier and much more comfortable by the sensitive, professional and proficient home care provided by Red Cross home support staff. POLAND, Charles Gerald "Gerry" Dawson Charles Gerald Dawson Poland, B.Sc. Petroleum Engineering (U. of A., 1956), B. Ed. (after), P. Eng. Dad peacefully slipped away from us on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Survived by his beloved wife Doris (Dory), and loving children Michael (Carol) and Patricia, he is the cherished grandfather of four, Samantha, Travis, Rosamund and wee Bridget, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Gerry, as he was known to all, was born in Drumheller in April 1934 to Albert and Edith Poland; whose parents were homesteaders in the Hand Hills early in the last century. Gerry was predeceased by his parents, beloved son Doug, siblings Jack and Betty. Dad had a long and varied career in the oil patch which book-ended three years as an educator in Calgary. He loved to ski, play golf, hike and camp, and swim as well as play his musical instruments (trumpet, alto sax, flugelhorn, clarinet and trombone) in various bands. Dory and he were snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona for over a decade and enjoyed other travels over the years. Dad also relished the annual Dawson clan reunions. Dad was a gentleman, had not an enemy in the world; how many can say that? The family would like to thank the caring and highly professional staff at the Colonel Belcher, especially Tecumseh House, for their stellar care of our Dad this past year. SWAN, Major Frederick John Fred Swan, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital on December 25, 2007. Fred will be lovingly remembered by his wife Hazel Swan of Calgary, son Merv Swan (Terry) of Houston, daughters Darlene Swan of Calgary, Tricia Sterner (Harlan) of Calgary and Sandra Swan of Sherwood Park. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Jeff, Joey, Jared, Darrell, Courtney, Matthew, Grayden, Megan, Kelly, Nicole and Brittany and nine great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Hertha McRae (Clarence) and sisters-in-law Marie Schwandt, Wanda Swan and numerous nephews and nieces. Fred was predeceased by his parents William Ludwig and Louise Schwandt, brothers Art (Grace), Hal, and twin brother Ted. Fred was born February 28, 1919 in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan where he grew up on the family homestead. Fred and his twin brother Ted joined the army November 8, 1940 with the South Saskatchewan Regiment where he quickly rose to the rank of Lieutenant. In 1943 Fred was stationed in Fort Garry where he met Hazel before he was posted overseas. He returned to Canada after the war and married Hazel on March 22, 1946. Fred later served with the Queen's Own Rifles in Germany for NATO and with the United Nations in the Middle East. Fred retired with honour in 1968 with the rank of Major. After retirement, Fred worked at Phoenix Press retiring at age seventy-five. Fred was completely devoted to his family and was always there when anyone needed a hand. Fred was well known for his sense of humour and story telling, where he never let the truth get in the way of a good story. He is fondly remembered by his creative methods of wood working skills and love for the colour red and gold MACtac. He was an avid reader and had a passion for current world affairs and military history. A celebration of Fred's life will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 13:00 at LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME, corner of 17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W., Calgary, Alberta. BATTRUM, Jack On Sunday, January 6, 2008 Jack passed away after a brief illness at the Willow Creek Extended Care Center in Claresholm, Alberta at the age of 93 years. He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine Battrum, his son John (Valerie) Battrum, grandchildren, Douglas (Megan) Battrum, Jennifer (Spencer) Easthope, William Battrum, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings, and wife Mabel. Born on the family farm in Battrum, Saskatchewan, August, 1914, he was the youngest child of William and Mary Battrum. Jack began his schooling in Battrum and completed it in Calgary at Western Canada High School. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force serving during World War II in the 116 Squadron, Eastern Air Command as a Wireless Air Gunner on flight crews patrolling the Atlantic Ocean. Upon returning to Calgary after the war he worked as a partsman for Massey Harris. This was the beginning of a career in parts management for Massey Ferguson, John Deere, and Detroit Diesel eventually ending as Dealer Development Manager for Watrous Power Products. He also served on the Alberta Apprenticeship Board and participated in the development of the provincial Partsman Apprenticeship Program. Friends introduced him to Miss Mabel Day and they were married in late 1946. Jack and Mabel left Calgary in 1967 to reside in Edmonton until finally settling in High River in 1999 for the remainder of their fifty-nine years together. Jack was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Stampeders. He was a member of the Aircrew Association, the Royal Canadian Legion and served as Vice-president on the executive of the National Ex-Air Gunners Association of Canada. SCOTT, William Arnold - At Kingston on Monday January 7, 2008, William Scott in his 93rd year. Leaving his beloved wife Yvonne after 67 years together, daughters Jay & Clare, son Nick (Yolande), predeceased by brothers Lorne, Elmer and Keith. He had an interesting background. Born of missionary parents in Korea, he lived in Manchuria, with schooling in Seoul, Korea and Kobe, Japan, University of Toronto and London School of Economics in England. He served with the R.A.F. during the war, and on returning to Toronto joined an Air Survey Company. He worked in Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa and retired to Kingston. He will be remembered for his efforts to preserve for posterity the rich history and heritage of Kingston. Annie Rose McCabe October 21,1923 - December 31,2007 Annie Rose McCabe was born October 21, 1923 to Frank Jacob and Babara Vazzel. She was the eldest daughter of 7. Annie was born in Marceoli, Hungry. In 1926, her whole family took the long journey over to Canada, where they settled in Mt.Pleasant, Ontario, on farm land. Annie was predeceased by her parents, and sibling Frank Jacob, her first husband James Klezli and second husband Dennis McCabe, and her daughter Elizabeth Rose Klezli. She is survived by her two sons James Klezli and Patrick Klezli and wife Helena, three grandchildren Rebecca and husband Brandon Belcher, Jami Klezli, and Dustin Klezli, two great-grandchildren Nevaeh Capot Blanc and Kaylin Belcher, as well as five siblings; Mary, Helen, Margaret, Elizabeth, Madeline, as well as many nieces and nephews all of Ontario. She married James Klezli in 1953, and had three children, James, Elizabeth and Patrick, unfortunately Elizabeth passed at birth. Annie and James settled in Mt. Pleasant, until James's passing. Annie then remarried to Dennis McCabe, where they settled in Brantford, Ontario. Annie was a house wife and a seamstress. When Dennis passed away in 1983, Annie made a bold move, sold everything, and moved West to Fort Nelson to be with her two sons and their families. Annie made many friends in Fort Nelson, including Mauren Weibe, Murielle Bernard, Sharon Gordon, and Bertha Cole (deceased). Annie was passionate for sewing, she sewed up until 2006, making numerous baby blankets for many people. Annie Rose McCabe, 84, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer, at the Fort Nelson General Hospital Long Term Health Care, Monday at 7:50 AM, December 31, 2007. Annie will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her. Annie was an amazing lady, she will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace. 10953198

HARVEY, Helen (nee: Melanson) - Passed away suddenly and peacefully on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at the age of 74 years, at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital from a stroke. Helen was predeceased by her parents Irene and Napolean Melanson and survived by her younger brother Everett of Bathurst, NB where she was born on June 10, 1933. She was married in August of 1958 and moved to Ontario where she became the mother of 3 children, Cheryl (Rick) Henderson, Susan Clerk, and David (April) Harvey. She was an active member of the Collingwood Legion (Branch 63) and follower of St. Mary's Church. She was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's and moved to the Chartwell retirement home in Collingwood. Among her many talents were her love of socializing, knitting, baking and activities such as pool, lawn bowling, and darts. A warm and caring person, she will be greatly missed by her surviving children, friends, and 6 grandchildren, Ryan and Justin McIntyre, Alex Clerk, and Andrew, Melissa, and Dylan Harvey. La défunte laisse ses enfants; Lise (Normand Sawyer), Réal (Gisèle Lapalme), Lucie (Claude St-Cyr), Guy (Johanne Seney), Louise (Michel Franche), Liane (Pierre Lainesse), Lucille (Jocelyn Picard), 7 petits enfants et 10 arrières petits-enfants.
