HOEKSTRA Francis (1931-1980) and Roy (1927-2004) She was both beautiful on the outside and, more importantly, on the inside. 25 years ago we lost our dear mom, Francis. Not a day goes by that I do not think of her and the unselfish love she showed us. She is remembered for her constant smile and unique sense of humor in everyday things. Her grandkids never met her but they know "Oma" through stories shared. I know in my heart that Jesus welcomed her home May 22, 1980 and that her loving Roy joined her January 5, 2004. G. Robert MacLeod G. Robert MacLeod, 80, loving husband of Shirley MacLeod of Moncton for 59 years, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Wednesday, May 18, 2005. He was a decorated War Veteran, retired supervisor with Canada Post. He is survived by two sons; one daughter; grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. HICKS, GERALD LEROY Gerald Leroy Hicks, age 68, husband of Audrey Lorena (Calhoun) Hicks of Charters Settlement, N.B. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax, NS after a long battle with cancer. Born in Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late LeRoy and Gwenlillian Hicks. Gerry was a very kind and caring man who will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends. Gerry could often be found working on his wood lot or with his many friends on different projects. He was fond of his hobby farm where he kept horses. He was especially proud to have raised and trained two sets of Oxen. He was a longtime and active member of the New Maryland United Baptist Church in Nasonworth. Gerry was a cook at the Maritime Ranger School for many years and retired as Component Manager in 1999 after serving for 36 years with a total of 42 years in the food service business. Gerry is survived by his loving wife Audrey, two children, Duane (Carol) Hicks of Charters Settlement, NB and Gerri-Lou Hicks (Hughes) of Fredericton, NB; three grandchildren, Shane (Terri) Hicks of Charters Settlement, Melissa McCallum of Fredericton, NB and Tyler Hicks of Charters Settlement, NB; three great grandchildren, Victoria, Kyle and Jared Hicks; four sisters, Joan (David) Chalmers of Deep Brook, NS, Lynda (Clarence) Wagner of Marshtown, NS, Lorraine (Harry) Weir of Saint John, NB and Elizabeth (Jerry) Robitaille of Windsor, Ontario, and one brother, Donald Hicks (Medora) of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Phyllis Bertaux; one brother, Roderick Hicks and one brother-in-law, William Bertaux. MACLEOD, MAGGIE JOYCE Age 20 months, died peacefully at home on May 19, 2005 in Poole, ON following a brief illness. She is survived by her parents, Andrew MacLeod and Alison Rideout, twin sister Emma, all of Poole, and halfbrother Zachary St-Amand of Grand Falls, NB. She will also be sadly missed by her grandparents, William and Susan (Jamieson) MacLeod of Fredericton, NB, and Jim and Anne (Corbin) Rideout of Lethbridge, AB, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visitation will be held at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 7 Spencer Street, Milverton on Saturday, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Chris Beaumont officiating. M. Thomas Butts C.D. INTERVALE, NB - M. Thomas Butts C.D., 78, of Country Care Special Care Home, Intervale passed peacefully to his eternal reward at The Moncton Hospital following a lengthy illness on Friday, May 20, 2005. Born in Glace Bay, NS, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen Lydia (MacPhee) Butts. During the war, he served with the RCSC in Canada. Following the war, he was employed as an Iron Worker. He joined the RCAF Military Police and served in Ottawa, Goose Bay, Cold Lake, Prince George, Borden and Moncton, where he retired. Thomas joined the Corps of Commissionaires serving at the National Conservation Centre, NBCC and Atlantic Lotto for 15 years. He was member of Royal Canadian Legion # 6 and the Air Force Vets. Thomas is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (McLean) Butts; daughter, Mary Anne Lavoie (Pat), Petitcodiac, NB; son, Dr. Thomas Butts (Gaye), Victoria, BC; grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicole, Christina and Chad; sister, Bridget Radkey, Glace Bay, NS; brother, Neil (Marie), Glace Bay, NS; several nieces and nephews. LAKE, EILEEN AGNES Eileen Agnes Lake, wife of the late William Lake, of Fredericton, NB, passed away surrounded by her family, on May 20, 2005 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on June 2, 1919 in Joggins, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Nellie (Blanche) Brien. Eileen loved her 110 McKnight Street neighbours, all her friends and her home city of Fredericton. Her joy of life included her family travel and playing bridge with her life long friends. Her strong faith sustained her through her life and will bless her on her next journey. Eileen is survived by three sons, William Lake of Truro, NS, Bruce Lake of Calgary, AB and Richard Lake (Sarah) of Toronto, ON; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Katherine Forrest (Frank) of BC; sisterin-law, Marion Brien of Fredericton, NB; and several nieces and nephews. GRAY-GRANT, ETHEL THERESA (nee MacINNES) - Ethel Theresa passed away May 8, 2005 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver at the age of 77. Ethel is survived by her five children Daphne (Eric), Jennifer (Michael), Heather (Steven), Geoffrey (Rachael), Andrea (Jim), and her eight grandchildren Claire, Duncan, Alison, Larissa, Theo, Keegan, Farley and Jack and her sisters Olwin Landry and Elaine MacInnes. She was predeceased by her brother Bill MacInnes, and her husband Denis. Born in Moncton, NB May 15, 1927, Ethel moved to Vancouver in 1952, where she met and married Denis. They raised their five children in West Point Grey and jointly ran the Western News. Ethel pursued her artistic interests by teaching weaving and pottery and by eventually becoming a pastel artist. Over the past three years she held three successful art shows, fulfilling a long-held dream. The funeral was held in St. Augustine's Catholic Church on May 13th. He was a gentle man with a keen sense of humor, a love for gardening and a great sports fan. He always loved a cup of tea in his favorite spot at the kitchen table. He had his share of health problems but always came out a fighter. A wonderful father who would do anything for his girls. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye as he loved spending time with them. Sincere thanks to HSC staff for their care and compassion shown to dad during his final days as well as the 1st floor staff at Central Park Lodge Nursing Home. CARTER, Thomas Le Mesurier M.C. Peacefully, in hospital on May 18, 2005, in The Hague, The Netherlands, after a short illness. The second son of the late Basil B. Carter and Mary (nee Casey). He was born in Toronto on June 10, 1915. He was predeceased by his first wife Marie Louise Patan and by his second wife Alice Landwehr Clejan. Also by his sister Adery Jarvis, Nora Gillespie, Margaret Archibald and by his two brothers Jack and Harry Carter. Tom is survived by his daughter Monique (Olivier Romieu) and three grandchildren in Paris and by his step-daughters Anca Struycken, Sandra Castens and Petra Le Planque and their families in The Hague. In Canada he leaves his loving nieces Ann Boa, Janet Archibald, Gillian de Auer, Susan Archibald, Joslyn Le Blanc, Vivien Young and Valerie Carter. He also leaves three nephews Ian Gillespie, David Archibald, Michael Jarvis and will be much missed by his sister-in-law Pamela Carter (the late Harry), Ottawa. Tom had a fine war record serving with the First Field Division RCA in Italy in 1943 and later landing in Normandy on D-Day. He was twice wounded and awarded the Military Cross for outstanding action in Italy. Tom joined the Department the External Affairs shortly after the Second World War where he had a distinguished career. He served in Brussels, Berne and Rome and was Charge d'Affairs in Warsaw. SCHOTT, Dale Garnett LCol OMM, CD Died suddenly on Thursday, 19th of May, 2005 at the Ottawa General Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario at the age of 65 with his family at his side. Dale is survived by his wife Marilyn, sons Steven, Darcy and step-son Peter Thomson. Much loved grandfather of Leanne, Megan and Ella. Son of Doreen and Jack Schott and brother of Yvette Juhasz, Sally Plant, Pat Redmond, and Bob Schott. Dale joined the Royal Canadian Artillery as Soldier Apprentice in Shilo, Manitoba in 1955. He was commissioned and served in many Regiments and appointments as a junior officer and saw service in Shilo, Petawawa, Gagetown, Edmonton and Germany. As a senior officer he served as a peace keeper with the United Nations in Cyprus, and Kashmir. He also represented Canada in other capacities in many countries such as: Norway, Australia, and the United States. Dale completed his military service in Ottawa. He was awarded the Order of Military Merit for outstanding service on the 15th of June 1981. Upon retirement he served in a senior capacity at the Headquarters of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. The family will receive friends at the Heritage Funeral Home at 2871 St Joseph Blvd, Orleans on Monday the 23rd of May from 2 to 4 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday the 24th of May at 2 P.M to be followed by a reception at the funeral home. WOOD, Arthur Edward (Lt. Colonel) Passed away peacefully on May 12, 2005 - his 90th year with Joy, his loving wife of 59 years at his side. Born May 16th, 1915 he lived a full life. A champion Ontario paddler and graduate of Queen's University-Psychology he served in World War II as a Tank Commander- First Canadian Armoured Brigade in Italy. He served as a Reserve Major (2.I.C.) with the Governor General Foot Guards and Lt. Colonel commanding the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. President and Founder Wood's Advisory Service in Ottawa 1958-1975, he was both community and politically active, including a Past Chairman of the Ottawa School Board. While aboard their ketch TIGIFF, he and Joy wrote a regular column for the Toronto Sun called 'Sail Away'. They settled on Galiano Island, BC where Art served as the First President of the Galiano Health Care Society and was a Past-President of the Galiano Lions Club. Survived by his wife Joy, son John and daughter-in-law Phyllis, North Bay, Ontario; daughter Lesley and son-in-law Neil, Richmond, BC and grandchildren Megan, Sarah, Eden and Alicia; Brother and sister-in-law John and Bev Lund and their family; Cousin Philip Wood and wife, and his late brother Mike's children Lavinia, Bobbe, Susan and Ted. Art made a difference in the lives he touched and will be sorely missed but so lovingly remembered. Donations made to the Parkinson Society of BC much appreciated. BROWN, Margaret E. "Betty". At the age of eighty-seven years, of Newport, passed away in Newport on Sunday, May 15, 2005. She was born in Montreal, PQ on December 3, 1917, the daughter of Philip and Marie (Darragh) Barrett. Betty loved animals and bird watching. Over her lifetime she rescued and kept many animals. On September 13, 1941 Betty married George C. Brown, who survives her. She is also survived by her daughter, Diane Brown-Couture and her husband Michael of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, her grandsons, James Couture and Quintin Couture and his wife Jessica, all of Wareham, Massachusetts, her brother, Alan Barrett of Montreal, PQ and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, James Barrett. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Gwen now joins her beloved husband of 43 years - Stan, who predeceased her in Dec. 2000.
