BELLANGER Jacqueline "Jacquie" Helene Bellanger of Edam, SK passed away in the Battleford Union Hospital, North Battleford, SK on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the age of 69 years. Jacquie is survived by one daughter, Michelle Bellanger; one son, Marc Bellanger; one brother, Bernard and his wife Helen Malhomme of Kenmare, North Dakota; as well as numerous other relatives. The Prayer Service was held on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. and the Memorial ser Service was held on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 from the Edam Christ the King Roman Catholic Church with Father Ted Jerome officiating. The Darcy deMontarnal and Hugette MacGregor played the organ. The Edam Community Choir was in attendance. Honorary pallbearers were all of Jacqueline's friends and family. Interment followed in the Edam Roman Catholic Cemetery. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster and Turtleford administered the funeral.

LALONDE It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, teammate and friend, Daniel Benjamin Lalonde. Daniel died suddenly on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Saskatoon University Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. The second son of Eugene and Debbie Lalonde, Daniel grew up on the family farm near Debden, SK. He was an avid hockey player, guitar player and an honor-role student. He loved to spend his sumêmers with family and friends at the cabin at Morin Lake, and was most recently employed at his uncle's store in Victoire. Dan touched many lives in his short time here. He was a friend to all at Debden School and will be remembered for making everyone feel special. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. "Sometimes the most beautiful flowers fade the quickest." A Prayer Service was held on Friday, March 28, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. and was led by Chantel Bisson. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church, Debden, Sask. Celebrant was Rev. Fr. Gene Warnke. Shared Memories was by his father Eugene Lalonde. Crossbearer was his brother Matthew Lalonde. The Honor Guard was the Grade 11 and Hockey Teams. Pallbearers were Jolan Lajeunesse, Brendan Lalonde, Robert Lalonde, Bradley Duret, Jeremy Johnson and Darren Villeneuve. Final Resting Place is the Debden Cemetery. Daniel Benjamin Lalonde was born on November 18, 1986 in Meadow Lake, SK and died on March 25, 2003 in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 16 years. RANDY LANGLOIS Suddenly in Vancouver, Randy Langlois, aged 47 years, formerly of Selkirk, MB passed away on April 8, 2003. Randy is survived by sisters, Audrey of Selkirk, Donna (Leo) of Houston, BC, Bonnie (Wayne) of Winnipeg, Debbie (Thomas) of California, and Dorothy (Mario) of Montreal; brother John (Jock) of Vancouver; his mother Joyce of Montreal; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Randy was born and raised in Selkirk, moving to Vancouver as a young man. He was employed in the autobody business for many years. He truly loved the Vancouver climate and beauty of British Columbia. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends who meant so much to him. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humour, easy manner and his joy in life was communicating with family and friends. Randy will always be in our hearts. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. J. CONRAD LAVIGNE We regret to announce the death in Timmins, Ontario, on April 16, 2003, of J. Conrad Lavigne after a lengthy and courageous battle with emphysema. He was born in 1916 in Chénéville, Québec, and raised in Cochrane, Ontario, but lived most of his life in Timmins. He was predeceased by his wife Jeanne Canie in 1995. He is survived by his seven children, Michelle (Jacques de Courville Nicol), Marc (Erika Fenske), Andrée (Doug Forrester), Nicole (Pierre Lavigne), Jean-Luc (Suzanne Turenne), Pierre and Marie-France (Bill McDonald), 16 grandchildren, Alexandre (Frédérica Dupuis), Valérie (Pascal Harvey), Isabelle (François Baril) and Pascale de Courville Nicol (Kristopher Von Lignau Gerecz), Nathalie (Sean Gregson) and Julie Lavigne, Erik and Nicolas Forrester, Louis-Gabriel, GeneviËve and Guillaume Lavigne, Catherine and Étienne Lavigne, Daniel, Joël and Jean-Luc McDonald, as well as five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Spencer Gregson, Loïc and Juliette Von Lignau Gerecz and Gabrielle Baril. J. Conrad Lavigne is the founder of CFCL radio, the first French language radio station in Ontario and the founder and former owner and CEO of the Mid-Canada Television System. During his forty years in broadcasting, Mr. Lavigne earned considerable prestige by building the largest privately owned television network in the world, extending from Hearst to Ottawa, and from Elliot Lake to Val d'Or, an area of some 100,000 square miles, with four originating stations and a dozen rebroadcasting towers linked in a private microwave system. Twice in the 1970s, he was awarded the Colonel Keith Rogers Memorial Award for the most outstanding technical contribution to broadcasting in Canada and he was further honoured by his colleagues who elected him to the Canadian Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 1990. He served for many years on numerous boards associated with the broadcast industry, such as the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement, the Television Sales Bureau of Canada, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and the Radio Sales Bureau of Canada. He also presided for years over the French Language Broadcasting Association of Canada. For that, and for his continuous efforts in creating better understanding between the two founding nations sharing broadcasting in Canada, he was presented with the Order of Canada in 1982. A long time director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, he was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967. Concerned with the future of broadcasting in Canada, he served in 1986 on the federal Caplan-Sauvageau Communications Task Force, which, through its recommendations for the new Broadcasting Act, played a key role in bringing about numerous changes to broadcasting. For this, the Central Canada Broadcasting Association made him an honorary life member and described him as a Canadian broadcasting legend. He held directorships in dozens of companies, including Chambers of Comêmerce, the Ontario Hotel Association, Ontario Hydro, Northern and Central Gas, the National Bank of Canada, Royal Oaks Mines Limited, CML Industries and Parcap Management. He was a founding member of Waferboard Corporation and served for some years as director and chairman of the board of Northern Telephone. His humanitarian and philanthropic endeavours have embraced a wide spectrum of social concerns. He was a founding member of the Orientation Council of Cochrane and Temiskaming, a group which, in the 1930's, spawned the creation of dozens of Caisses Populaires-or Credit Unions-throughout Northern Ontario. As co-founder of the Timmins Association for Retarded Children in the 1950's, he donated land and helped build a school for the mentally handicapped, which was followed by the creation of the Arc Shop. During his term as Chairman of the Board of St. Mary's Hospital, in Timmins, he oversaw the construction of a new wing. In the 1960's, he served for ten years with the founding Board of Governors of Laurentian University in Sudbury. That board saw fit in 1981 to bestow upon him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In Sudbury, he also served as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Second Battalion Irish Regiment of Toronto with whom he had served in Holland as an infantry captain. Son rayonnement, de Hearst à Ottawa, et d’Elliot Lake à Val d’Or, soit une superficie d’environ 100 000 milles carrés, comprenait quartre postes avec production locale et une dizaine de satellite ou de postes ré-émetteurs liés à l’époque par le plus grand système de micro-ondes privé du monde. Il entreprit sa carrière de pionnier de la radiodiffusion en obtenant, en 1950, la permission de construire à Timmins, le premier poste de radio d’expressoin française en Ontario, auquel s’ajoutèrent des postes de relais à Kapuskasing et à Hearst. La radio française devait lui servir de tremplin pour financer ce qui allait devenir un vaste empire de télévison de langue anglaise desservant presque la moitié de l’Ontario et tout le nord du Québec, qu’il fut seul à desservir pendant environ vingt ans, soit de 1955 à 1975. Récipiendaire à deux reprises dans les annéees 1970 du prestigieux prix annuel Colenel Keith Rogers Memorial Award pour sa contribution exceptionnelle au développement technique de la radiodiffusion au Canada, il devait également être élu par ses pairs au Temple de la renommée de la radiodiffusion canadienne en 1990. Il s’est dévoué bénévolement durant de nombreuses années en siégeant au conseil de divers organismes associés à la radiodiffusion, dont le Bureau of Broadcast Measurement, oœ il réussit à faire changer certaines pratiques défavorables aux poste d’expression française, et le Bureau national des ventes de la radio et de la télévision. Directeur de l’Association canadienne de radio et télévision de langue français (ACRTF), il accéda à sa présidence tout en étant vice-président de la Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). Ces deux rôles lui ont offert une occasion unique de créer une meilleure entente, un climat plus sympathique et une répartition plus équitable entre les deux peuples fondateurs, partenaires sur les ondes candadiennes. Pour ses efforts, entre autres, on lui remettait l’ordre du Canada en 1982. Directeur pendant de nombreuses années du Conseil canadien des chrétiens et des juifs, on lui avait décemé la médaille du centenaire en 1967. En 1986, inquiet de l’avenir de la radiodiffusion canadienne, il siégeaie à la Commission d’étude fédérale Caplan-Sauvageau sur les communications, qui dura deux ans, et dont on peut retrouver nombre de recommandations dans la nouvelle Loi sur la radiodiffusion. En reconnaissance de ses contribution au domaine de la radiodiffusion, l’Association canadienne des radiodiffuseurs le nommait peu après membre à vie. Ses nombreuses années de dévouement à la promotion et à la défense de la langue française lui ont valu de devenir chevalier de la Société du bon parler français, président d’honneur de l’Association canadienne française de l’Ontario (ACFO), chevalier de la Survivance française, membre de l’Ordre des francophones d’Amérique, membre des Cents Associés et du Conseil de la vie française en Amérique, et frère servant de l’ordre de Saint Jean d’Acre. En 1982, le club Richelieu International, lors de son congrès mondial à Ottawa, le nommait personnalité Richelieu International de l’année. Au cours des années, il a siégé aux conseils de direction de sociétés ou d’organismes aussi variés que la Chambre de Comêmerce, l’Association des Hôtels de l’Ontario, Hydro Ontario, Northern and Central Gas, la Banque nationale du Canada, Royal Oak Mines, CML Industries et Parcap Management. Membre fondateur de la Waferboard Corporation, il a également agi comme président du conseil de Northern Telephone pendant plusieurs années. Son dernier projet a été le développement d’une vaste subdivision en cinq phases à partir du boulevard Lavigne à Timmins. J. Conrad Lavigne a touché à plusieurs domaines d’intérêt social par ses oeuvres humanitaires et philanthropiques. Ainsi, dans les années trente, à titre de membre fondateur du Conseil régional d’orientation de Cochrane et Témiskamingue, il a participé au lancement d’une douzaine de caisses populaires dans le nord de la province. Co-fondateur de l’Association des handicapés mentaux de Timmins dans les années cinquante, il leur fit don d’un terrain et a contribué à l’établissement d’une école et d’un centre occupationnel. C’est sous sa présidence que l’Hôpital Ste-Marie de Timmins a finalement pu bâtir une nouvelle aile. J. Conrad Lavigne fvt un des pionniers de l’Université Laurentienne de Sudbury au début des années soixante lorsqu’il accepta de siéger à son bureau des gouverneurs. Malgré une formule difficile de fédération entre deux groupes linguistiques et trois groupes religieux dans un milieu ouvrier hostile et dépourvu d’entreprises, cette institution devint un grand succès. La Laurentienne lui remettait d’ailleurs en 1981 un doctorat honorifique en droit. C’est également à Sudbury qu’il devint lieutenant colonel honoraire du 2e batallion du régiment irlandais de Toronto avec lequel il avait servi en tant que capitaine d’infanterie en Hollande au cours de la 2e guerre mondiale. Membre fondatuer du Cercle Alouette de Timmins, du Cercle Saint Louis de Kirkland Lake, directeur du cercle dramatique Ma”tre Chantre, basse du fameux quatuor Les Gais Lurons, tout au long des années, malgré toutes ses responsabilités de père et d’homme d’affaires, Conrad Lavigne a toujours trouvé le temps de s’impliquer et de promouvoir sa langue, sa culture, son patrimoine et l’intérêt des siens. Au lieu de fleurs, sa famille préférerait des dons à une cause qui lui tenait beaucoup à coeur ces derniers temps, la nouvelle bibliothèque publique de la ville de Timmins. FAILES, Victor Roy Saunders, In his 84th year, on Sunday morning, April 13, 2003, passed away at his residence at the Eventide Home in Niagara Falls, with his wife Eveline and son Victor by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Eveline of 61 years, daughter Jane Beck (Bloyce) and sons Victor (Dianne) and Wayne (Susan). Also survived by his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, three sisters, one brother and granddaughter Heather Bialach. Mr. Failes wasa Charter Member of the Ontario Watchmaker's Association and owned and operated Pierson's Jewellery in downtown St. Catharines for 32 years, where he was known to some of his customers as Mr. Pierson. Mr. Failes served with the RCAF as an InstrumentMaker during the Second World War from 1941-45 and was a member of the Merritton Legion Branch 138. He was an avid card player at the Russell Avenue and Dunlop Drive Seniors' Centres. At Mr. Failes' request, cremation took place on Monday, April 14,2003. DOAK, Patricia Ann, In her 58th year on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, with courage and dignity Pat slipped peacefully away surrounded by the love of her family, and went to join her Mum and Dad, Jean and Hugh Watson. Pat was the cherished wife of Sam (Chebby) for 39 years; beloved Mum of Richard (Ginette) and Michael (Theresa); devoted Nana to Samantha, Gabrielle (Gabby), Chantal, Michael, Jordan and Nathaniel; a very special sister to June (Mike) and Sandra, and a loved aunt to Anne and David. Alsoleft with wonderful memories of Pat are her mother-in-law Isa in Scotland, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joy and David Doak and their children Christopher and Elizabeth in England, and many aunts and cousins in Scotland. Pat was an avid and competitive lawn bowler, winning many district and provincial bowling titles with Merritton Lawn Bowling Club. She was known for her crazy spirit, her fun, laughter, joy and creative talent (Pat's Christmas Santa's), all of which she so willingly shared with her family and friends. She also shared these qualities, as well as a genuine sense of compassion and caring, with her many patients in her years with the Red Cross. These patients, in turn, loved her as do we, her family. In the past two years Pat drew great comfort and solace from Wellspring Niagara and the many friends, volunteers and teachers she met there. These relationships gave her a true sense of spirituality and allowed her to continue her journey fearlessly, with peace and dignity.
