STEEVES, James Edmund George Mr. James Edmund George Steeves, age 72 years, a resident of Kakabeka Falls, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar Site, on Sunday, May 5, 2002 following a brief illness. He was born July 18, 1929 in Hillsboro, New Brunswick. He was the son of the late Edmund and Edith Steeves. Edmund and his wife moved to Kakabeka Falls in 1999 from Sudbury to be near family. Edmund worked in Sudbury for MacIsaac Mining & Tunneling for over 30 years until his retirement. He was an avid gardener, loved feeding and watching the birds, and he loved the outdoors. Edmund is survived by his daughter Karen (Bryson), son Ned (Carmen), all of Kakabeka Falls, and son Kevin (Shannon) of Sudbury, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Leota Jonah of Peterborough and Arlene Blakeney of Moncton, New Brunswick, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (2000), his parents and one sister Ruby. 1908 - 2002 After a short illness, Herb Moran, a distinguished veteran of the Canadian Foreign Service, died peacefully in the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus) on May 4th at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife, Frances (Carlisle), formerly of Waterloo, Ontario. A Graduate of Osgoode Hall Law Society, Herb Moran was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1935. He had been practising corporation law in Toronto when he joined the Canadian Army in 1940. He served overseas in the United Kingdom, Italy and Northwest Europe, was awarded the MBE and was mentioned in dispatches. On discharge from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Colonel, he joined the Department of External Affairs as a foreign service officer, Grade 4. In 1949 he became an assistant under secretary of state for External Affairs, with responsibility for administration and personnel matters. In 1952 he was appointed ambassador to Turkey. With Fran he served in Ankara until 1957 when they were transferred to Karachi on his appointment as high commissioner to Pakistan. Returning to Ottawa in 1960, he became director-general of the External Aid Office, serving in this capacity until 1966, when he was appointed ambassador to Japan. In this, their last foreign posting, the Morans served in Tokyo for six years, retiring from the foreign service in 1972. In retirement, with Ottawa as home, they enjoyed an extensive program of travel to visit old friends and familiar places, and spent winter months in Florida. There will be a private cremation, but, in accordance with Herb's wish, no funeral or memorial service will be held. The Ottawa Citizen, 07-05-2002

SLEEMAN, Marion Passed away at the General Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie on May 3, 2002 at the age of 82 years. Marion is leaving behind her husband of 55 years, W. Leonard Sleeman, her daughter Sharon McIlveen, and her two sons Christopher and Robert all of Markham, Ontario. Marion’s friends and acquaintances are scattered from British Columbia to New Brunswick, and mainly throughout Northern Ontario from Sleeman, Kirkland Lake, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Mississauga and finally to Sault Ste. Marie. Many of her friends are in the Southern United States. In view of the above there will be no Memorial Service in Sault Ste. Marie. MOREAU, Maurice - 1922 - 2002 - In loving memory of Maurice Moreau who passed away at the Au Chateau Home for the Aged, in Sturgeon Falls, on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the age of 79. Beloved husband of Madeleine Moreau (nee Roberts). William (Chuck) Roach William (Chuck) Roach, 73, of 1131 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away after a lengthy illness May 3, 2002 at La Verendrye General Hospital. He passed peacefully with dignity and honour in his own way and time, surrounded by family. He was born Oct. 11, 1928 in Garden River, Ont. to the late William and Clara Roach. He went to work at a young age of 14 and his adventures brought him to Northwestern Ontario, where he spent his working life as a logger in the Sapawe and Fort Frances area. On Nov. 15, 1955, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Klyne, the greatest love and treasure of his life. Together, they raised seven children and were married for 46 years. He spent his later years working at the mill in International Falls, Mn., until he took an early retirement. His passion and most proudest moments were watching his sons and grandson, Justin, play hockey. He spent many joyful moments at the arena in Fort Frances being a hockey fan. He was an “original six” Montreal Canadiens fan throughout his life. In his retirement years, he loved gardening and taking drives in his beloved bush areas around Rainy River District. His entire life spent in Fort Frances gave him a bird’s-eye view of Rainy Lake. He loved the water, the bush, and was at peace when surrounded by his family and friends. In 1998, he attended a Roach family reunion in the pine grove of Garden River First Nation with his wife, Bubby, visiting his brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. This was a time of great joy for him. Chuck and his daughter, Jo, were two peas in a pod and spent many hours talking about his family tree and the significance of those roots. He expressed to all of this children to work hard, love life, and be happy. He was loved by many, and his door was always open to his friends and family. He was a storyteller and was proud to be able to say that he helped open up the country through logging and river boat work. His lifelong friends are many, and those who shared his love of the bush and water spent many hours at Chuck’s table sharing stories of life’s lessons and journey’s. He was predeceased by his sons, Randall (Randy) in 1999 and Daniel in 1997, and infant son, John, in 1961; and two brothers, James Orville and Michael Roach. Chuck is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, David; daughter, Joanne of Fort Frances, Ont., and Bill (Elfredie) Quesnel, B.C., Donald of Thunder Bay, and Sandra of Whitehorse, Yukon; three grandsons, Justin, Alexander, and Jesse of Quesnel, B.C.; and granddaughter, Elizabeth of Edmonton, Alta. Also surviving are four brothers, Patrick (Dolly) of Fort Frances, John (Brenda) of Garden River, and Maurice (Marie) and Joe (Esther) of Sault Ste. Marie; two sisters, Gladys Boissoneau of Sault Ste. Marie, and Elaine Lesage of Garden River; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna (John) Wood, Judy (Denis) Lambert, Nora Klyne, Shirley Roach, Minnie Roach, Ernie Klyne, and his uncle by marriage, Alfred (Snicker) Veran, also survive. The family finds solace knowing that he is at peace with his sons, Randy and Dan. The Eagles are flying and heaven has opened its gate to a true patriarch of the Roach Oak tree. Chuck’s last months were spent in St. Boniface and La Verendrye hospitals. The compassion and care shown by the many doctors and nurses were a blessing. They cared for him and helped the family let him go with dignity and grace. He is now at peace. “I have roots stretched in the earth, they are the deepest part of me.” Remember my roots and let them grow and be remembered with respect, honour and integrity. You will be forever loved and missed, Bubby, children, and grandchildren. To celebrate and honour his life, we the family welcome friends and family to a memorial service Monday, May 6, 2002 at 7 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. It is with a deep sense of loss that her family announces the passing of Dorothy, Saturday, May 4, 2002 at the Guelph General Hospital. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Clayton; and her children John (Ingrid Veninger) of Toronto, Karen of Ottawa, and Robert (Judith Tancsa) of Cairo, Egypt. She was proud of her four grandchildren: she was "Ummi" to Hallie and Jacob; and "Grandma D" to Jim and Michael. Dorothy was a charter member of Trinity United Church, Guelph and a volunteer at the Guelph General Hospital. As a member of Mac'52 she was an enthusiastic participant in University of Guelph activities. She enjoyed bowling, her book club, the theatre, and golf where she liked to say that she "dressed the part!". Dorothy lived with a great zest for life, enjoying every day to the fullest. Her greatest joy was her family, and the gift of her love and care will continue to fill our hearts. TURPIN, Gérald "Gerry" In loving memory of Gerald Turpin who passed away peacefully at home, Saturday morning May 4th, 2002. Son of the late Wilfred Turpin and of the late Ingrid Turpin (née Kujampaa). Beloved husband of Gaetane "Gay" Turpin (née Belanger) of Sudbury. Loving father of Gisèle Gallie (husband Terry) of Toronto and Robert (wife Wendy Gray) of Sudbury. Dear brother of Shirley Chartrand (husband Léo) of Montréal, Doreen Wetow (husband Bill) and Gloria McGarvie (husband Gerald) both of Sudbury. Predeceased by his 2 brothers Raymond (wife Aline of Sudbury) and Ronald "Ron" (wife Simone predeceased). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his granddaughter Maggie. Gerry was a born salesman. Never at a loss for words, he enjoyed sharing his love of hunting and fishing with his friends in Sudbury and Waldersee, Manitoba. His passions were his workshop and a fine automobile. Gerry was a man philosophical in nature. He married Gaetane Belanger September 3rd, 1952 in Sudbury. The family will receive friends at the CO-OPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd., East, (at Notre-Dame), Sudbury, Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday May 8th, 2002, 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Sudbury.
