It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother, Hazel (Schoular) Sergeant in hospital, Perth, on Wednesday, March 6, 2002. Beloved wife for 72 years of the late Melville Sergeant. Dearest mother and friend of Bernadette (Martin) Bean of Ruskin, Florida, Shirley (George) Rowsome of Brockville and Thelma (Robert) Waldeck of Perth. Predeceased by son Arthur and infant son Murray. Hazel will be missed by daughter-in-law Mildred Sergeant of Ohio and sister-in-law Joyce (Harold) Edwards of Ashford, Kent, England. Proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. RUDOLF LICHTENSTEIN Rudolf (“Rudy”) Lichtenstein, born in 1910, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in Pine Acres Home in Westbank, B.C., where he had received loving care for more than three years. He leaves his loving wife, Sheri-Ann of Kelowna, B.C., and her sons, Raymond and David, and their families; as well as his younger sister, Irma Potwarka of Waterloo, Ont.; and nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Colum-bia. Fr. George Abeka-Mensah will officiate at Rudy’s memorial service at Pine Acres Home, 1902 Pheasant Lane, Westbank, B.C., on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 3 p.m. Cremation by Everden Rust Funeral Services. Rudy had served overseas in the Canadian Lake Superior Regiment in WWII. Many thanks to Dr. Lewke and Pine Acres Staff for their care and concern. She had been active at St. Martin's Anglican Church until her hospitalization in 1990. DDS.MA. Died quietly in hospital early in the morning of March 7, 2002 the dear wife of Victor Haw after a short illness. Born to Aleksander Socki and Antonina Dorofeev on September 8, 1918. She received her early education in Poland and had begun university in Warsaw when WWII broke out. She found herself trapped in eastern Poland at the end of the summer break in 1939 in the Soviet zone where she was ultimately imprisoned and eventually taken to Siberia to a concentration camp. In 1942 she was released at the time of the intervention of Churchill on behalf of the Poles and made her way to the middle east by way of Iraq where she joined the Polish armed forces. After a period in Baghdad and in the desert training she was stricken with malaria and had to be discharged on medical grounds from the army. Following a period of hospitalization and rest Irena went to the Lebanon and entered the French school of dentistry from which she graduated. She practised in Sidon until 1948 when she and her first husband, Henryk Slowikowski, a former Polish diplomat, emigrated to Canada. Irena had a varied and interesting career since that time in which she was employed as a dentist with the Department of Indian Affairs, obtained an MA degree in Slavic languages, taught Russian at university and Polish to military officers destined as attaches to foreign embassies, finally ending her career as an information officer with Energy, Mines and Resources in which she participated in technical exchanges on mining and metallurgy between Canada, the Soviet Union, Poland and France. After her retirement Irena found a new career in writing, having published a book in Polish on her experiences in the Soviet Union and has contributed columns to a Polish weekly in London. She leaves many friends in Poland, London, England and in Canada and was dearly loved by all who knew her. RCAF W/C (retired) City of Ottawa Engineer (retired) Passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002 in his 94th year. Bill will be greatly missed by his sisters Nellie Michayluk, Anne Olynek, Emily Tabasniuk, Dorothy Bokshowan and brother Julius all of Saskatoon, sons Ernie (Smiths Falls), John (Montreal) and Ron (Massachusetts), daughter Janet Crane (Alberta), daughters-in-law Carol, Miriam and Clare, grandsons William (Toronto), Ken (Ottawa), Stephen (Massachusetts) and David (California); granddaughter Christy Romeo (Massachusetts) and great-granddaughter Dominique (Toronto). Bill was born in 1908 near Meacham, Saskatchewan, the eldest of Michael's and Maria's nine children. He attended high school at the P. Mohyla Ukrainian Institute in Saskatoon and in 1933 graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. Bill married Nellie Pernarowski in 1932. Through 42 happy years, Bill and Nellie raised four children, living in Pelly and Kamsack, Claresholm, Edmonton, St. Lambert, and Ottawa. After Nellie's death, Bill married Bess Trofanenko Kushner. They enjoyed 20 years golfing and travelling extensively together until Bess died in 1996. In 1940, Bill enlisted in the R.C.A.F. After the war, he accepted a permanent commission in the RCAF, retiring in 1959 with the rank of Wing Commander. In 1965, after a few years as a Defence Construction Consultant, he accepted a post as Structual Engineer with the City of Ottawa, remaining with the City until his retirement. Bill was a life long member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, serving on the committee that planned and built the Ottawa Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Byron Avenue. Golf was always a large part of Bill's life and that of his family. He was a member of the Highlands Golf Club in Edmonton and the Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa. He played his last round at Hylands in his ninetieth year. During his last five years Bill lived happily at the Willowdale Retirement Centre in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue, on Saturday, March 9, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Panikhida prayers in the Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Interment in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In Brockville at the Brockville General Hospital on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 in his one hundred and second year. Born in the Townships, the deceased, at a very early age, moved to Montreal and worked briefly for the Dominion Bridge Company in Lachine and the Riordin Paper Company in the Mont-Tremblant area but spent all the rest of his working life in various woodlands operations of the Abitibi Paper Company in Ontario and Quebec; at retirement he was managing the company's woodlands operations at Beaupre below Quebec City. A quiet spoken, God-fearing gentleman, working in a rough environment, Cec was loved and respected by all he came in contact with. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Aline Fortier, he leaves his faithful daughter, Myrne Hart and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Following cremation and a private service, ashes will be interred in the Anglican Cemetery at Grenville, Quebec; a memorial service will be held at a time and place to be announced later. (Retired Architect, Public Works Canada, and long time supporter of community theatre) Peacefully at his home near Brockville, on Wednesday, March 6, 2002; William Wallace Rankin at the age of 75 years. Beloved husband of Dorian Rankin. Loving father of Peggy Owen and her husband Glen of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Barbara Plunkett and her husband Paul of Mississauga and Sandy Rankin of Smiths Falls. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Jessica, Patrick, Geordie, Pamela and Tom. Also survived by his sister Jean Rankin, and his brother James Rankin and his wife Betty. Sadly missed by nieces Heather and Christine, and by nephews Michael and Mark. Fille de feu Wilfrid Farrell et de feu Claire Varin, Gertrude (née Farrell) d'Alexandria, originaire de Cornwall, était la femme bien-aimée de feu Lucien D'Aoust et la mère adorée de Rita Leblanc (Roger) de Green Valley. Elle sera regrettée par ses 4 petits-enfants: Robert, Richard, Rachelle et Roxanne. Elle était la chère soeur de Marie-Therese Farrell de Montréal et Lillian Archambault (Camille) de St-Sauveur. KStJ, CD, MD Colonel, Canadian Forces Medical Service, (Retired) Passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family on Tuesday 5 March 2002. Son of the late Daniel and Ellen Coleman of Maxville, Ontario, Roy is predeceased by his brothers Lawrence, Howard and John. Happily married to Norma (nee Bernard). Loving father of Marie (Gerry Scott), Bill and Susan, and cherished grandfather of Sarah Lethbridge, Laura and Christopher Scott. Dear brother-in-law of Ethel Coleman of Valleyfield, Quebec and Edythe Coleman of Maxville. Roy, who was born in Maxville in 1923, had a distinguished 33-year military career, serving first as an RCAF pilot in WWII and then as a physician of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in the Korean War. He retired from the Canadian Forces Medical Service in 1976 as a radiologist. Dr. Coleman's volunteer work with St. John Ambulance was recognized by his admission as a Knight of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. He was active with the Defence Medical Association, serving on the Executive and as President of the Eastern Ontario Branch.
