NORA MARY ALMSKOG In loving memory of Nora Mary Almskog, 89, of Atikokan, Ont., who passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan. Nora was born May 12, 1912 in Mountain Grove, Ont. to Neil and Stella Kellar. She spent most of her life in Rainy River District. She was united in marriage to Nels Almskog on Nov. 15, 1947. She worked at Mathieu’s mill during the war and waitressed at the Huddle Restaurant in Fort Frances, Ont. for many years. She loved to crochet, knit, and spend time in the garden. Nora moved to Atikokan in July, 2001 to be closer to her daughter, Lorraine. She was predeceased by her husband, Nels, on Sept. 10, 1976; parents, Neil and Stella Kellar; brother, Gordon Kellar; and sister, Florence Hastie. Nora leaves behind her daughters, Lorraine Swire of Atikokan, Ont., Lois Martin of Quesnel, B.C., and Alfreda Mynott of Thunder Bay, Ont.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Stewart Kellar of Emo, Ont., and Lyle Kellar of Devlin, Ont.; sister, Jessie Rose of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Marietta Marshall officiating. Cremation took place in Thunder Bay, Ont., and interment in Rainy River Cemetery in Fort Frances will take place at a later date. ELLI AINA HELLIN TYRVAINEN Mrs. Elli Aina Hellin Tyrvainen, 76, a resident of 206 Windsor St., Thunder Bay, Ont., passed away at her residence Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. Born in Ahtari, Finland, she immigrated to Canada in February, 1952. A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Elli enjoyed music, studying history and philosophy, and writing stories and poetry, some of which were published and had won awards in her native Finland. Elli had a love for life and song, and a wonderful sense of humour, all of which will be sadly missed by all who knew her, especially by her family. Elli is survived by her seven children, Raimo (Audrey) Tyrvainen, Raija (Neil) Carey, Arvo (Denise) Tyrvainen, Reijo (Jane) Tyrvainen, Liz Krall, Maryann (Kevin) Johnson, and Moni (Mark) Joyce; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews in Finland. She was predeceased by her husband, Albin, in 1994; and by her parents. Visitation and funeral services were held Monday, March 4, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court St., Thunder Bay, Ont., with Pastor Jari Lahtinen of Hilldale Lutheran Church officiating. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery. Marie's children, Mary Grace, Julie, Petchie, Jane and David gathered recently with numerous friends in Ottawa to celebrate with poetry and memories, a life lived by an incredible woman. Marie - mother, mom, grandmother, mentor and friend died on February 16, 2002 at the Ottawa Hospital just before the snow began to fall. All her children, who loved her so much, surrounded her during those final days. They were all by her side as she left the world she brought them into. Mom touched the lives of many people who were lucky enough to be counted among her friends. She was a teacher to many whom she never hesitated to challenge on issues of social justice. She also inspired many people with her political activism, volunteerism, compassion and empathy. This inspiration will live on in the hearts and acts of her family and friends. Marie's brother Walter Poznanski, his wife, Jean, and children, Walter Jr. and Ann were especially important to her during her early life in Detroit with her father Tony and mother Mary. Her children, sons-in-law and grandchildren, Mary Grace, Bob, Lauren Kosta & Marita Obst and Julie, Ray, Jason & Stefan Dolny of Winnipeg, Petchie, Jim, Tony & Claire Hawkins of Killarney, Manitoba, Jane Pepper & Mark Ireland of Vancouver, David Pepper & Michael Graydon and very special adopted daughter, Kim Meimaroglou & Bruce and Will Tate of Ottawa will miss her terribly. David is lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Dianne; his sons Vincent (Tammy), Joel (Amber and daughter Anais), and David William (Greta); brothers Raymond (Carol), Wayne (Diane), Greg, and Lorne; sisters Debbie (Paul Gordon) and Donna; Aunt Pearl; mother-in-law Kay Derkson; sisters-in-law Annette Derksen (Dale Syrota) and Pearl Drews (Jerry); many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. David worked for Revenue Canada Customs, Excise and Taxation for 37 years, starting his career as a stock clerk in Winnipeg and retiring in 1994 as Director General of Human Resources in Ottawa. He is remembered as a strong leader whose innovative management style brought out the best in colleagues and employees. David's creative pursuits included pottery, drawing, song writing, playing musical instruments, and writing fiction, plays and screenplays. Celebration of Life services will be held at Grant Memorial Baptist Church in Winnipeg on March 8 at 1:30 p.m. and at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in White Rock on March 12 at 3:30 p.m. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. 1917-2002 Au Foyer Richelieu de Sorel-Tracy, le 27 février 2002 est décédée, à l'âge de 84 ans, Mme Estelle Larivière, veuve de Lucien Bertrand, demeurant à Saint-Ours. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Jacques, Michelle, Luce et son conjoint Jean-Luc Champagne; neuf petits-enfants et sept arrière-petits-enfants; sa soeur : Rachel Larivière; ses neveux et nièces, ainsi que plusieurs autres parents et amis. At his residence on Friday, March 1, 2002, at the age of sixty-nine years. He was predeceased by his parents, the late Gordon McKenzie and the late Charlotte Brooks, of Hamilton, Ontario.
