SPARLING, Jack - Peacefully at the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound on Saturday July 18, 2009 in his 95th year. William Wesley Howard “Jack” Sparling the beloved husband of June (nee Williams). Loving father of Thomas and his partner Tom Reynolds of Toronto, Paul and his wife Mary Ann of Alberta, Liz and her husband Garry Howey of Owen Sound and Eleanor and her husband John Van Delden of Winnipeg. Cherished grandfather of seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. BROOKS, Roy W. - peacefully, surrounded by his family at QHC - Belleville General, Roy went to be with his Lord on Sunday July 19, 2009 in his 92nd year. Roy's extensive career included lumber jacking, ship building, airplane manufacturing (Lancaster Bombers), general contracting, sail boat manufacturing and master craftsman. Beloved husband of Ivy Brooks (nee McGuffin) of Belleville. Dearly loved father of Noreen (David) Hadley, Janice (Judd) Rae both of Belleville and Ron (Nancy) Brooks of Barrie. Cherished grandfather of Andrew (Leah) Davis, Matthew (Diane) Davis both of Belleville, Aaron Davis of Ottawa, Kristin (Steve) Ridout, Leanne (Brad) Finney both of Barrie, Joel (Maribeth) Daniels of Bloomfield, Jason (Angela) Brooks, Michael (Naomi) Brooks and Jeremy Brooks (fiancée Julie) all of Barrie. Great grandfather of 11. Roy is also survived by his brother Glenn (Edith) Brooks of Verona. He is fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews and extended family. GREEN, Mrs. Elizabeth Laird (née Mackie) - Passed away peacefully in St Catharines, on July 16, 2009. Born in Bridge of Weir, Scotland, in 1930, she came to Canada in 1957. Beloved wife of Robert Green and loving mother of Leslie John Green. Betty Green is also survived by her dear brother, Alasdair Mackie and sister-in- law, Cécile Mackie, by her daughter-in-law Denise Réaume, and by many cousins, nephews, and nieces in Scotland and in Canada. PRENTICE, Charles (Chuck) M. - Passed away at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Sunday July 19th, 2009 at the age of 78. He was a loving and caring husband to Doris (nee Reid) for 59 years. Father of Dennis (Theresa), Nancy (Ross) Bateman, Mark Charles (Georgia), Jeffrey (Pol), the late (2003) Robert (Cindy), James (Jill) and Scott (Janice). Papa of 12 grandchildren and almost 8 great- grandchildren. Brother of Jean (the late John) Martin, the late Shirley and Art Matthews, Marilyn (Steve) Mesaros and Robert (Brigitta). Chuck's involvement with Boy Scouts in his early years had a positive influence on all his life. He worked for Bell Canada - Lineman to Manager during 37 years of service. Chuck was a co-founder of the Queenston Volunteer Fire Department and became Chief until his retirement. He also coached fastball for different ages for 17 years. LIVELY, William James - The 'Lively One' left us peacefully on Thursday, July 16th. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Bill moved to Toronto after a stellar athletic high school career to join the Toronto Argonauts in 1948. He then became a teacher at Pauline Avenue Public School and at night taught English to new Canadians. After serving as Secretary of the Men's Teachers Federation, Bill began his fulfilling and successful career in sales and sales management first with W. J. Gage Limited and then with Tsubaki Canada. He will be missed by his many friends at Weston Golf Club where he served on numerous committees and as Captain and President. He cherished the Honorary Life Membership he was presented with in 2006. Bill had been similarly honoured by the Georgian Peaks Ski Club in 1997. He loved a party and there was none bigger on the Niagara Escarpment than the season-ending one the 'Skimeister' organized every year since 1956. Bill was a long time volunteer in support of Variety Village and the Ontario Golf Association. Lovingly remembered by his four children, Jim (Leslie), Bob (Teddy), Joanne (Don) and Ron (Maureen), his grandchildren Jackie, Nicole, Charlotte, Merryn, Rachelle, Reggie, Kate, Cameron, Jillian, Scott and Bradley. Their mother and grandmother, Marion Cowman, shares this loss. Bill will be sadly missed by his beloved brother Ron (Nancy) and his niece Jill, nephews Paul, Tom and Jeffrey and their families. CALDWELL, Thomas - Suddenly at the Kingston General Hospital, in his 79th year. Dearly beloved husband of Gertrude who predeceased him in February, and with whom he shared 59 years of married life; beloved father of Daniel and Rebecca and son-in-law Kevin; dear brother of Jake and the late Bob, Betty, Margaret, Mary and Cathy. Thomas served a number of parishes during his 48 years as a Minister in Canada and the United States, including First Baptist Church in Brantford. His devout faith was a great strength to him. His life was an example of quiet dignity, great courage in times of suffering, and unfailing devotion to his wife, Gertrude, most recently during her illness and always to his family. His recently published book, All You Have to do is Be, is a testament to his belief in living as full and fulfilled human beings. Beloved wife of the late Danny McPhee (1994). Loving mother of Ann (P.E.I); George (B.C.); Helen (B.C.); John (Brantford); Rita (B.C.); Alan (Brantford); Peter (B.C.) and Jane (Barrie). Cherished Grandmother of 13 grandchildren. Sister of Jean Curley, George Spencer, Pauline Horsburg, Sylvia Gazzola and Doreen Raco. Millie is survived by many nieces and nephews. Millie graduated as a Registered nurse in the class of 1951. She worked at the Brantford General Hospital and the St. Joseph's Hospital as a nurse. She volunteered with Birthright, the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic, as well as the John Noble Home. She was life long member of the Catholic Women's League. WILSON, Donald - After a long and courageous struggle, Don passed away at his residence, surrounded with the love and presence of his family on Friday July 17th, 2009. Predeceased by his daughter Jennifer Wilson. Don was the co-owner of Wilson Floor Design for the past 35 years. He was a member and past president of the Greater Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce and the Ridgeway Lions Club and loved the Washademoak Lake. SALOMONE, (Sal) Adolphe - May 11, 1923 - July 18, 2009. With great sadness we announce the passing of Sal Salomone. Peacefully our beloved father and friend has left us, and is now with his precious wife Annina (May 31st, 2009). Sal passed from this life in his 87 th year on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Timmins and District Hospital. Predeceased by his father James and his brothers Nick (Sheilha) and Lloyd (Reta). Sal wa raised on “Main Street” in the west end of Timmins and would often talk about that with great pride. He attended Mattagami Public School and TH&VS before he joined the army at the age of 17. He spent six years overseas as a member of the Algonquin Regiment fighting for his country. At the end of the war, Sal returned home only to fall in love and marry his “ANNIE” on September 8, 1946 and they remained together until her passing almost 63 years later. Sal was a very proud and caring father who had a deep love for each and every one of his seven children. Sal spent his entire working life in the mines, of which he spent over 39 years at the McIntyre. He was extremely proud of his community Schumacher, as evidenced by his many contributions. He was a tireless volunteer for Schumacher Minor Hockey, Schumacher Fire Dept. and the Schumacher Lions Club for whom he played a pivotal role in the building and management of the Schumacher Lions Club Community Swimming Pool. In 1995 Sal was formally honoured for his dedication and service to the community of Schumacher. All who knew him, we will miss his mischievous smile, his colourful stories and his generous nature. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his children Sandra (Russ) Reeve, of Summerland, BC, Donna (late Doug) MacElwee of St. Catherines, Linda (Jim) Killingbeck of Manitouwadge, Anthony (Rachelle) Salomone of Schumacher, Joanna (Gord) Conley of Schumacher, Jamie (Betty Ann) Salomone of Porcupine, Lloyd of Fredericton, NB. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Mary (Archie) Flora and Denia (John) Phillips. He was a kind, caring and generous grandfather to Curt (Christy) Reeve, Dean Reeve, Leah MacElwee, Cindy (Sean) Dunn, Sandra (David) Desmoulin, William (Charrly) Killingbeck, Kathryn (Andrew) Bruce, Reiley and Taylor Salomone, Bradley and Brodie Conley, Jonathan (Karrie) Shea and Amber Shea (Jeff). Great grandfather to 8 great grandchildren. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews for whom he always had a special spot in his heart. We wish to express our gratitude and thanks to the surgical floor Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers and other staff at TDH for their compassion and professionalism. Also our thanks go to Dr. Ciccone & Lise, CCAC (Nancy) and Bayshore Nursing (Tanya). A time for a celebration of his life will be announced. Interment will follow at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. POWELL , Mary Isabelle (Yelland) 1919 - 2009 It was early on Friday morning, July 17, that Mary Powell died following a short illness and we miss her terribly. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters: Marilyn (and David) Marven of Oshawa, Ontario and Evelyn (and Doug) Powell of Okotoks, Alberta and one son Tom (and Betty) Powell of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by Dwight, her husband of sixty-five years, her brother Sherm and her sisters Elizabeth Yelland and Flora Pinder. Mary was born in Mountain Park, Alberta and grew up in Cadomin. She attended Grade 12 and Normal School in Edmonton. She collected many memories teaching in a one room school near Faucette, AB. After marrying Dwight she continued her lifelong journey of volunteering with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, delivering Meals-on-Wheels and leading exercises for seniors. In the past fifteen years she knit in excess of 1500 toques for newborns at the High River Hospital. Mary worked tirelessly in United Churches in Cadomin, Acme, Calgary, Nanton, Edmonton and Banff. The family wish to offer our sincere thanks for the care our mother received while a resident at the Father Lacombe Care Centre, Calgary, at the Silver Willow Lodge and Madison Manor in Nanton. VAN LARE-ANDERSON , Doreen Vivian (nee Wheeler) It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Doreen Vivian Van Lare-Anderson (nee Wheeler). Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, "Mummsey" succumbed to the disease peacefully at the Foothills Country Hospice (Okotoks area) surrounded by her family in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the age of 84 years. The youngest of five siblings: George (predeceased in December 2000), Frances, Eva, and Markham. Doreen was born in Acme, Alberta, on April 17, 1925 to Katherine "Kate" (nee Markham) and Arthur Wheeler. In April 1961 Doreen married William David Van Lare of Crossfield, Alberta (predeceased in February 1995). Doreen is survived by their two children: Katherine (Matt) and Wheeler (Nick). She also leaves behind her husband of ten years, Clayton Anderson of Calgary. Doreen attended Mount Royal College in Calgary in 1948 where she studied and received a Secretarial Diploma. She returned to Acme to work in her father's insurance office for several years before she and husband Bill moved to Calgary in 1969. She continued in similar administrative work at Woods Christian Home and the Calgary General Hospital in the emergency and respiratory departments until her retirement in 1985. Doreen had many passions and interests including bridge, gardening, writing, painting and in particular, dancing and music. Singing in public since she was three, over the years Doreen had been a member of many different community and church choirs and often performed as a soloist. Mummsey had a zest for life and wonderful sense of humour and those who met her seemed to instantly develop a fondness for her infectious smile and outgoing personality. She loved to laugh and always had a twinkle in her eye like she was up to something. Many thanks to Dr. Gloria Mazloum and the wonderful, caring and compassionate staff at the Foothills Country Hospice. In lieu of flowers those that desire are encouraged to make a donation to the Foothills Country Hospice Society. Keegan). Proud and loving Dad of four children: two daughters Susan Hayden (Bill), and Lorraine Pelot (Linda Stinson), and two sons, Ronald Pelot (Cecilia Engler) and Jim Pelot (Tina Beauchamp). His dream of becoming a grampa was fulfilled with the arrival of beautiful and adored grandchildren, Gerry and Emily Hayden, Nikki, Anya, Ali and Sam Pelot and Ryan Stinson (Laura). The eldest of a family of eight, he is survived by his brothers Lloyd (June), Ivan (Madge), John, Peter (Janice), Robert (Suzanne), his sister Vivian (Bill McKim) and sister-in-law Kate. He was predeceased by his parents, William John (Jack) Pelot and Eliane Gauthier as well as his brother Bernard. Born in the village of Billings Bridge, he lived all his life in Ottawa valuing his roots and connections by working in and contributing to his community. Upon completing his CA, he became an employee of CBC Head Office where he worked in various positions for 34 years, retiring in 1988 as Director of Sales Policy and Planning. Over the years, he found many outlets for his musical talents and interests most notably as the choir director at Canadian Martyrs and St. Thomas d'Aquin churches. After retirement, he volunteered on many Boards of Directors dedicating himself from 1988 to 2001 primarily to serving l'Arche d'Ottawa as a member and Chair. Ten years ago, Gerry collaborated with three of his brothers to write and publish a history about their birthplace. Our very special thanks to Michelle Vesey, Director of Barrhaven Manor and all her dedicated staff for their love and caring support over the past 2 years and to Drs.
