MERGL, Frank C'est avec grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Frank Mergl à sa résidence, le jeudi 19 mars 2009, entouré de sa famille. Frank, époux bien-aimé et meilleur ami d'Elizabeth Varga pendant 56 ans. Père de Linda (Peter), Gordon (Colleen), Ronald (Anne), Deborah (Charles), Jeffrey (Lucie) et Richard (Geneviève). Grand-père de Jason, Matthew, Amanda, Josh, Andrew, Alex, Patrick, Charles, Erika, Emma, Brendan, Nicolas et Justin. Arrière-grand-père de Brandon, Maëva et Adam. Fils de feu Frank Mergl Sr et de Theresa Gintner, il laisse dans le deuil ses frères Anthony (Rose), Michael (Lise), René (Marie) et sa soeur Margaret (Jean-Jacques). Mrs. Zarina (nee Gool) Antia July 12, 1926 - March 14, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Zarina Antia. Zarina passed peacefully after a lengthy illness, joining late husband Naval Antia, son Azad Kolia (Amina Kolia) and sister Naz Gool Ebrahim. Zarina leaves behind son Balou Antia (Karen Iddon), twin sister Nur Jehan Mohamed (late Sadiq), six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Canada, South Africa, and around the world. For Zarina, friends and family were indistinguishable and we will always remember her generosity, kindness, and passion for breaking bread with generations of loved ones. Zarina's heart and soul were sustained through the love and support of so many. A special funeral service was held in accordance with her wishes on Sunday, March 15th. Dorothy Elaine Daoust August 7, 1938 - March 14, 2009 Dorothy Elaine Daoust Dorothy Elaine Daoust, age 70 years, peacefully passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital on Saturday, March 14th, 2009, with her family by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Gary (Lorraine) Daoust, Sandra (Jim) Kostiuk, and many loving grandchildren. Left to cherish her memories are her mother Mabel Pederson; and sister Doreen Henchel, Carolyn (Jim) Wasilenko, Margaret (Fred) Burr, Joyce (Paul) Zaremba; together with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Walter, and her father Lloyd. Dorothy was born in Geraldton, Ontario on August 7th, 1938. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She lived to design and decorate, working diligently by her husband’s side to build two homes and renovate many others. She loved the lake, spending the summers there with her family, enjoying board games with the grandchildren, puzzles of all kinds, gardening, late evening camp fires and a really good book. A Memorial Service celebrating Dorothy’s life will take place at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before rail crossing) on Friday, March 20th, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Carriere, Francis Alfred - December 5, 1921 – March 14, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather and uncle Frank Carriere. He was born in Timmins Ontario and in 1965, brought his wife and family to Iqaluit, Baffin Island, where he spent his career in education on Baffin Island and Fort Smith N.W.T. After retirement, he moved to Victoria, BC where he was passionately involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He became a member of the Society in 1988 and from 1991-94 was installed as Victoria Particular Council President and in 2001 as Regional Vice-President. He was also an ardent participant of Target Theatre(Kaleidoscope). He is at last reunited with his loving wife of 41 years, Stella, as well as his siblings Marjorie, Grace, Dorothy, Marguerite and Doug, and his dear grandson Patrick Willows. He will be sadly missed by his children Michelle (Enderby BC), Fred (Yellowknife NWT) and Marie and Jeanne (Victoria BC). He also leaves 9 loving grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and an elder sister Eileen Deeth (Rochester NY). Frank is also mourned by countless friends and extended family who were enriched by his vibrant personality. Mom and Dad instilled in us the gift of devotion and love for family and friends and were shining examples of faith and “joie de vivre”. SCHWARZFELD, Terry - the Ottawa woman who was attacked and robbed while on vacation in Barbados last month, has died. Schwarzfeld and her daughter-in-law, Luana Cotsman, from Guelph, were attacked by a lone man while walking on Long Beach, in the island country’s south end, during the afternoon of Feb. 28. Schwarzfeld was struck in the back of the head with a hunk of wood. She was flown back to Ottawa, unconscious, and died Wednesday morning. Cotsman is recovering from her injuries. The man fled after the attack, and police in the Caribbean country recently announced a reward of $10, 000 Barbados dollars (about $6, 400) for information leading to his arrest. Officials are also installing police kiosks at Long Beach, where the attack occurred. Schwarzfeld was recently elected national president of the Canadian Hadassah-WIZO website, a Jewish woman’s philanthropic organization. An active member of Ottawa’s Jewish community, Schwarzfeld was an ardent campaigner for women’s rights in Israel. DICK, Helen - August 17, 1917 - March 20, 2009 Helen Dick, beloved wife of the late Bill Dick, passed away at home on Friday, March 20, 2009 at the age of 91 years. Helen was born in Calgary and was a life-long member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Gramma took great pride in the achievements of her grandchildren and loved their visits. In 1999 Helen moved to Manor Village in Huntington Hills. She made many new friends there and kept things lively and humorous with the residents and staff. Helen is survived by son Bob (Marge); daughter-in-law Barb; son-in-law Gordon Peters; grandchildren, Jeff, Julie, Dr. David, Brian, Cheryl and great-grandchildren, Bauer and Olivia. Emma Bourque 1916-2009 'A l'Hôpital régional Dr-Georges-L. Dumont, le dimanche 22 mars 2009, à l'âge de 92 ans, est décédée Emma Bourque, épouse de feu Jacob Bourque, domiciliée à Shédiac, Villa Providence. Née le 20 novembre 1916 à Shédiac, elle était fille de feu Jacques Fougère et de feu Mathilde Pitre. Mme Bourque a travaillée à la Villa Providence avant sa retraite. Elle laisse dans le deuil sept enfants: Thérèse Robichaud (Emery), Rita Fergusson (feu James), Stella Whalen (Michael), Gloria Gallant (Victor), Léonide (Édith) et Jean-Marie (Eugénie) tous de Shédiac, etRoland de Moncton; seize petits-enfants, quinze arrière-petits-enfants, deux arrière-arrière-petits-enfants et deux arrière-arrière-arrière-petits-enfants. WEINER, Charlotte Parker - was born in High Point, North Carolina, on January 16, 1917, and passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2009, surrounded by her family. Charlotte was in her ninety-third year. Charlotte is lovingly remembered by her husband, Emanuel (Manny) Weiner; children Ruthie (Hy), Ralph (Joyce), and Willie; grandchildren Beilah (David), Jonathan, Rachel, Joshua, and Jennifer; brother David Parker, sister June Thigpen, and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her sister Cora Worth Parsons. As a graduate of the Bank Street School, NYU, she first worked as a nursery school teacher and then spent twenty-two years at the Montreal Children's Hospital Day Treatment Centre for Young Children as a senior therapist. She was a founding member of the Nursery School Teachers Association of Montreal. Charlotte won the Helen Caldecott Prize, and received honours from the Canadian Early Childhood Educators. A special thank you goes out to the loving and loyal caregivers who looked after Charlotte over the years: Brenda, Teresita, Indra, Marichan, and Estrellita. CASE, Austin - May 23, 1922 - March 20, 2009 Austin Case, beloved husband of Dorothy (McCuaig) Case of Calgary, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Austin was born in Oldham Lancashire, England, and came to Canada to live in Calgary in 1926. He proudly served in WWII with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was very active in his community, especially the Ogden United Church, since 1927. Austin is survived by his son, Gord (Susan) and stepson Bob; his grandchildren, Trish (Ed), Brad (Wonita), Darren (Joy), Jocelyn (Andrew), Shevawn, Bryony (Tim), and Dustin; and his five great-grandchildren as well as his brother Norm (Bev) and numerous nieces and nephews. DONALDSON, Peggy Florence June 11, 1922 - March 15, 2009 Peggy Donaldson of Calgary went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the age of 86. She is survived by one sister, Joyce Crawford of Sussex, England; two sons, David of Edmonton, Alberta and Clive of Glennallen, Alaska; three grandchildren, Lisa dePruis, Andrea Ahronson, and Tara Jay; and one great-grandchild, Samuel Ahronson. She was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Jesse Bolton, her sister Margaret Weller, and her husband of fifty-one years, Norman. Born in Essex, England in 1922, she married Norman in 1941 while he was serving overseas in the Canadian army during World War II. They settled in Saskatchewan after the war where their two sons were born, and then moved to Calgary in 1959. NOBLE, David Ramsay September 25, 1922 - March 19, 2009 David (Dave) Ramsay Noble, resident of Forest Grove Care Centre, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Dave was born to John R. and Isabelle (nee Reid) Noble on September 25, 1922 on a farm near Compeer, AB. He was a family of thirteen (four sisters and eight brothers). Dave and his twin brother Ed received their education at Westland School which was about three miles from the homestead. He and Ed moved to Calgary where they were employed at Nu-West Homes in the building trade. Dave and Ed lived a number of years together before they moved to Forest Grove Care Centre. In earlier years, Dave enjoyed returning to the Compeer area to visit family and participate in the annual fall goose hunts. This allowed him to rekindle his agrarian roots. Dave and his brother Ed always had soft spots in their hearts for the stray animals, especially cats, that would surface at their residence when hungry. Never was a hungry animal turned away, which was a characteristic that they had learned in their rural childhood upbringing. Dave is survived by his sister June Davidson and four brothers, Bert, Alan, Ronald and Gordon. PILE, Gertrude (Judy) (nee Kruse) July 14, 1917 - March 6, 2009 Beloved wife for fifty-three years of the late Fred Pile. Fondly remembered by children, Alan (Pat), Kathryn (Gairey) Richardson and Stephen (Carol Crombie), and grandchildren Hazen Pile, Diamond Truong, Chantal, Tyler (Debi) and Dylan Wade and Christopher and Emily Pile. Judy was born and raised in Galt, Ontario, now part of Cambridge. She married Fred, an RAF pilot in Canada for training, shortly before Fred returned to England. Judy became a "war bride in reverse", following Fred in a wartime convoy during the Battle of the Atlantic. The couple returned to Guelph in 1949, where Judy became a member of Guelph Little Theatre. After moving to Toronto in 1958, Judy worked as principal's secretary for the North York Board of Education until her retirement. She and Fred then opened their own travel business. Judy died peacefully on March 6, 2009 at Sunrise of Mississauga after a ten year struggle with Alzheimer's disease. STACK, Edward Daniel Q.C. 1923-2009 With loving family members at his side, Edward Daniel Stack of Edmonton passed away peacefully on March 19, 2009. Born in Vulcan, Alberta on May 13, 1923 he is lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty-three years, Joan (nee Heather); their children, Sister Mary Clare U.J., Daniel, Ted (Kerry), Michael (Nadine), Peter (Monica), Margie (Brian) Gavriloff, Joanne (Randy) Wachowicz and Philip (Clara); their grandchildren, Keltie, Ryan, Karlyn, Michael, Nathan, Laura, Kathryn, Rebecca (Shawn), Luke, John, Andrew, Evan, Marcus and Dante; their great-grandson, James. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Paul, Berry, Frank, Carlyn, Luke, Cathy and Louis. He was predeceased by his father Luke, mother Mary Clare, sister Kay and brothers Luke and Lou. He was raised in Vulcan before coming to Calgary in 1940. He attended St. Mary's Boys School in Calgary and after a year at Dalhousie University joined the Canadian Army in 1943. Following three years of service, he entered the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Alberta and after graduating with a Commerce degree entered the Faculty of Law, graduating in 1953. Active in student affairs throughout his years at the U of A, in his final year he was elected President of the Student Union and was awarded the Gold Ring and the Mothersill Scholarship for his contributions to the University. While attending University he worked at Chateau Lake Louise as a Bell Hop and Head Bellman. Dad established his own practice of law in 1957, was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1970 and was one of the senior partners of the firm of Stack, Smith, Bracco and Irwin until appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta in 1975. He retired from the Bench in 1999. Dad led an exemplary faith-based life with a profound love of the Eucharist. He served as a member of Council of the Canadian Bar Association and Chairman of the Criminal Justice Subsection for Alberta. He was elected to the Edmonton Separate School Board in 1958 and served as a Trustee for ten years and as Chairman of the Board. Dad was a member of the Misericordia Hospital Board of Directors, serving as Vice Chairman and was one of the founding members of the Marian Center. In 1968 he was appointed to a special committee to study the need for additional post secondary education in Edmonton which resulted in the formation of Grant MacEwan Community College. He served on the GMCC Board of Directors as its Chairman and also served as a Director of the GMC College Foundation. Dad was also active in the community having served as President of the Belgravia Community League, a member of St. Anthony's Parish Council, Chairman of the St. Peter's Home and School Association and as a member of the Council for the Summer Village of Itaska Beach. He was appointed Mayor in his final term. He was also politically active both federally and provincially having served on various election campaign committees. He loved Canada, its people and all of its lands. In 1977, Dad was awarded the Queen's Commemorative Medal as "an expression of appreciation of worthy and devoted service rendered by the recipients in their various walks of life and of the esteem in which they are held by their associates." Dad's love and dedication to his family was the hallmark of his life. His pride and joy was the cottage at Pigeon Lake - Just Home - which was truly his destination of choice. He maintained his humor and joyful spirit to the end and will always be remembered for his loving, warm and generous character. BRENCHLEY, (Lococo) Mary - Peacefully went home on March 19th from Billings Court Manor in her 96th year to meet her husband, Edgar “Chirp” Brenchley, her baby son Jimmy, her mom and dad, Josephine and James Lococo along with her brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Vincent, Michael and Philip Lococo. Mary will be sadly missed by her daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Smith and her partner John Lochhead, her grandchildren Christopher (Kim) Smith and Joanna (Paul) Black. Nona will be missed by her 5 great grandchildren Kayla, Matthew, Justin, Mackenzie and Owen. Missed also by many nieces and nephews. Mary was active as an Alumni of Loretto Academy; served on various committees and volunteered for the Cancer Society as a driver. Mary was always available when needed by her family or friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel of HETHERINGTON & DEANS on Tuesday March 24, 2009 from 7-9 in the evening. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday March 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. The Rite of Committal will follow in Fairview Cemetery. BOUCHARD, Bernard 1930 - 2009 À l'hôpital St-Luc de Montréal (CHUM), le 19 mars dernier, à l'âge de 78 ans, est décédé M. Bernard Bouchard. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Vasiliki (née Condakis), ses trois enfants Diane, Georges et Michel et leurs conjoint(e)s, son frère Jean-Jacques et son épouse, ses trois petits-enfants David, Isabelle et Samuel, sa belle-soeur Hélène ainsi que de nombreux autres parents et amis. Ayant fait son cours classique au Collège Brébeuf, puis ses études universitaires à l'Université de Montréal (HEC), il devint un homme d'affaires brillant. Talentueux, M. Bouchard a oeuvré entre autres, dans les domaines de l'assurance, du commerce et de l'immobilier, qui lui ont procuré une grande satisfaction professionnelle. Toujours optimiste, combatif, énergique et généreux, ses qualités on fait de lui un conjoint, un père puis un grand-père formidable. Emporté par une maladie sans issue, il aura lutté jusqu'à la fin, tel un baroudeur, et aura donné tout un exemple de ténacité à ses proches. Il nous quitte avec la satisfaction d'une vie bien remplie.
