BARRY, Murray - Passed away on Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at the St Catharines General Hospital in his 88th year. Beloved husband of 63 years to Louisa (Lisette). Cherished father of Debbie (Rick) White, Corinne (Mark) Kwacz. Murray is predeceased by his daughter Arlette Woodhouse (2002) and his grandson Brent Kwacz (1994). Special grandfather of Michael White (Brittany), Ryan White (Samantha),Britny Kwacz and Dylan Kwacz. Proud great grandfather of Sydney White. Brother of Bernice Ferguson (Harold-Feb. 14th 2009) and brother in law of Bernice(Robert) Jacobs of Belgium. He will be missed by his niece and nephews. Murray was a proud Veteran who served in W.W. Il était l'époux de feu Yvette Courchesne, le fils de feu Joseph Chevalier et de feu Phébé Lemire. SCHONFELDER, G. John November 26, 1925 - March 10, 2009 It is with deep sadness that the family of G. John Schonfelder announces his passing on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. John died suddenly at his home with his daughter and caregivers from Carewest Sarcee by his side. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him but most notably by his children, Karen, Don and Rick Schonfelder; daughter-in-law Bev, granddaughters, Lindsay and Kristy (Andy); and great-grandson Caleb. Also left to mourn his passing are family and friends in Canada, Germany and Arizona. John was predeceased by his wife and mother, both named Herta. John was born in Ober-Schonbrunn on November 26, 1925 enjoying a happy and loving childhood growing up in pre WWII Germany. At the age of fifteen he joined the Merchant Marine with a desire to travel and experience as much of the world as possible. His dream was cut short one year later when John's ship was captured by the British within sight of the sinking battleship Bismarck. John spent the remainder of his teenage years serving as a prisoner-of-war in Gibraltar, Scotland, England and eventually Canada. He often commented that being captured and sent to Canada was the best thing that could have happened to him. He enjoyed his time in Canada so much that he volunteered to remain until the last repatriation of German prisoners-of-war on December 31, 1946. John tried to adapt to life in post-war Germany but with the support of Canadian sponsors he returned to Canada in August 1951, settling first in Ottawa and a year later heading west to Alberta. John arrived in Calgary in 1952, where he met his wife Herta and was embraced by her Czechoslovakian family. John and Herta had three children and in 1961 they settled into the newly developed community of Lakeview. John helped to sell many of the homes in the early communities of southwest Calgary. In 1962 he decided that a change in career was in order. Hired by London Life, John spent twenty-eight years as a dedicated and successful insurance salesman, always respected for his professionalism and caring nature. John and Herta loved travel and the outdoors, inspiring their family to enjoy Calgary's Rocky Mountain playground and the world beyond. John was an avid walker and his early morning footprints around the Glenmore Reservoir laid the ground work for what is now known as the Glenmore pathway system. When next you wander in the area, take a moment to stop and rest on the bench honouring John's pride of country and gratitude for the blessings that Canada provided. Always a positive and outgoing personality, determined to carry on despite his physical disabilities, John will be missed by all who knew and loved him. LeDUC, Mrs. Emily Swinton, 9/22/1920- 3/08/2009 - Emily LeDuc died peacefully of a brief illness at 3:43 on the afternoon of March 8, 2009 following her request that medical treatment be suspended. Close friend Libby Lockett and Emily's daughter Judith were by her side. Born Emily Grace Swinton in Detroit MI. She was the only child of David Russell Swinton and Helen Ormsbee Swinton. At the age of 13 following her fathers death, Emily and her mother moved to Port Jervis N.Y., to be near Emily's fathers family. Following graduation from high school in Port Jervis in 1938, Emily attended Mt. Holyoke College where she earned a degree in Sociology and Economics in 1942. For the next four years she worked in a N.Y. City bank as a Trust Officer, where she met Harold Artur LeDuc of West Springfield, MA whom she married on June 20, 1947. Harold's work took them first to Montreal and then to Sherbrook Quebec, where their two children were born. In 1955 the family moved to Port Chester, N.Y. and then to West Springfield, MA. in 1957, where Harold began working for Gilbarco Inc.In 1967 the family moved to Greensboro, N.C. where Gilbarco relocated.After 5 very happy years there, Harold's work then took them in 1971 to Brockville, Ontario Canada. Brockville became the home where they chose to spend the rest of their lives. Emily moved to Kingston Ontario in 2006 for medical reasons. A talented athlete, Emily was a competitive swimmer and diver in high school, rather than just watching her children learn to ski, Emily, enthusiastically took up the sport herself and enjoyed many exhilarating runs at Blanford and Mt. Tom.She and Harold both played tennis, and became passionate golfers. They belonged to the Sedgewick Country Club in Greensboro and The Brockville Country Club. In 1992 Emily won the Irene Wakely award from the Brockville Country Club for her nine hole-low gross performance. As recently as 2004, Emily played regularly. Emily and Harold loved to travel taking trips to Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the Middle East. They were avid bridge players and made many lifelong friends over the bridge table. All her life she was active in charitable and service organizations, most notably PEO, through which she made many lifelong friends.In Brockville she belonged to May Court, Probus, university Women's Club and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Emily was predeceased by her husband Harold in 1993, and is survived by her children David Swinton LeDuc of Willow Spring N.C. and Judith Emily LeDuc of Newton, MA and cousin Fran Jamison of Stuyvesant N.Y. On behalf of Emily, David and Judith wish to give their sincere thanks to all the staff and volunteers at Kingston General Hospital and the Rideaucrest Home in Kingston, and to Emily's many dear friends for their love and support during her final years. Emily chose to be cremated and have her ashes buried next to her husband's at the LeDuc family gravesite in Florence, MA. A celebration of her life will be held in Brockville at a future date. DIETRICH, Denise Christine June 9, 1957 - March 9, 2009 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Denise Dietrich of Calgary on Monday, March 9, 2009 at the early age of 51 years, due to an unexpected encounter with a stroke. Denise's favourite leisure activities included traveling places with her partner Arnie Johnson, sharing moments, playing cards, board games and watching cartoons with her beloved daughter Daralee. Her ultimate labour of love was cooking up a storm for those she loved and cherished. Denise worked hard and accomplished a career as a court clerk for the Alberta Justice Office establishing many new relationships, forming the strongest bonds and making her life a memorable one. Denise will be genuinely missed by her daughter Daralee Klemetski of Calgary; her life partner Arnie Johnson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Tom Wihksne and Judy and Glen Hildebrandt; twin brother Dennis Dietrich and his wife Marian; sister-in-law Eleanor Dietrich as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Ena and George Dietrich and her brother Allan Dietrich. GOULD, Rachel (nee Bodnoff) Passed away quietly on Friday, March 13, 2009 in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Victor Gould. Loving mother of Joan (Russell Kronick) and Jeff Gould (Enid). She was a devoted Momma to Adam (Ali), Jordan, Andy (Kendra), Jill (Alex), Michael (Erin) and Marni. Great-grandmother of Hayley, Nathan and Olivia. Funeral Service was held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue on Friday, March 13th at 3 p.m. with burial at the Jewish Community Cemetery, Bank Street. Shiva will be held at 404 Island Park Drive from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A special thank you to the 4th Floor Staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their compassionate care. HIGGS, Helen Mary (nee Sabo) Peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the age of sixty-four years. Helen was the dearly beloved wife of Peter, the loving mother of Andrea (Isaac), Tim, Catherine, and very proud grandmother of Ian. She will be greatly missed. Cremation has taken place. GREBINSKY, Bernard Joseph June 20, 1932 - March 11, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernie Grebinsky, our beloved father, brother, husband and grandfather. Bernie will be sadly missed by his loving partner, Marion Dingwall and her family, Karen (Harry) Finkel and their children Kirstie and Mark of Winnipeg. Also left to cherish Bernie's memory are his children and grandchildren; Bernie's daughter Cathy (Brett) Marklund and grandchildren Kelsey and Cale of Calgary, and his son Jeff (Donna) Grebinsky and grandchildren Katelyn and Michael of Red Deer. Also fondly remembering Bernie are his brothers Mike (Margaret) Grebinsky of Calgary, Paul (Mary) Grebinsky of Victoria, Vern (Bess) Grebinsky and sister Emily (Ken) LeValley of Regina, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family. Bernie was predeceased by his parents Frank and Anastasia "Nellie" Grebinsky, sister Frances Stefanic and brothers Ed and Bill Grebinsky. Bernie was born in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan in 1932, and in 1936 moved to Regina. It was in Regina that a long career in hockey began, as both a player and a coach. Bernie played four seasons with the Regina Pats beginning in 1947, making two Memorial Cup appearances. It was then on to the pros for Bernie, first with the Spokane Flyers followed by the Vancouver Canucks. In 1963 while working with O'Keefe Breweries he was transferred to Winnipeg and joined the Winnipeg Maroons. That season the team went on to win the Allan Cup then traveled overseas, representing Canada as good will ambassadors playing hockey throughout Europe. This would be the first of two such trips the Maroons would make to Europe. In 1967 Bernie coached the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL, during their inaugural season. He was transferred to Edmonton in 1970 followed a year later by a move to Calgary. In 1973 he returned to Winnipeg working in the home renovation industry and of course playing hockey, now with the "Oldtimers". Wanting to slow down some and already working in Selkirk with the Window Factory, he and Marion moved to Winnipeg Beach in 2002. There they bought a house that had been built in 1927 and preceded to renovate it turning the house into a cozy country home. Always one to be busy, Bernie worked, golfed and enjoyed life right to the end. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. GORUR Vasantha (Vassi) Vasantha Gorur - wife of the late Shrinath Gorur of Ottawa passed away on March 10, 2009 in Bangalore, India, after a short and sudden illness. She left behind her loving sons- Ravi in Washington, D.C. and Shashi in Pittsburgh, and their families. In Ottawa, she will be remembered by her many friends and former colleagues for her dignified, warm and frank demeanour, and also for her fiercely independent spirit.
