SHINGLES, Dr. Helene - Passed away peacefully at Bluewater Health on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the age of 91. Helene was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to volunteer work. After her retirement from her dental practice in 1976, Helene set up dental treatment facilities in Marshall Gowland Manor and for 30 years provided free dental services to the elderly and the disabled at local nursing homes and hospitals and made house calls for those that were homebound. Her vision was to establish similar dental service facilities for seniors and the less fortunate throughout the province. She worked tirelessly and provided free services for thousands of less fortunate people in the Sarnia area and volunteered on a full time basis until she was recently hospitalized. To recognize her passion and dedication in serving the elderly she was named to the Order of Canada, was the recipient of the Bicentennial Medal Award for Ontario, the Senior Achievement Award for Ontario, the Service Award- Ontario Dental Association, Fraternalist of the Year Award, and many other awards and honorariums too numerous to list. Helene lost her family in the Second World War and survived six years in a Nazi Concentration Camp. She was not expected to survive when American forces freed her in 1945. Through determination she recovered and came to Canada. She graduated from Toronto University School of Dentistry, and after a one-year internship in Toronto, settled in Sarnia. Helene will be sadly missed by all of her close friends as well as the many people she helped and treated. A special thanks to Linda and Mary who were with her in her final days and to the staff of Bluewater Health. A funeral service will be held to celebrate her life on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. BAKER, David Glenn - We are saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected death of David at the Brantford General Hospital on Thursday February 26 2009 in his 65th year. Predeceased by his parents Theodore Baker and Dorothy Reid. He has gone to join his wife of 41 years Janet Baker, who recently passed away on Thursday July 20 2008. Will be missed terribly by his children, Cynthia and her partner Jack Truckle, Tanya and her husband David Lawrence, Jason Baker and Jessica Baker. Sadley missed by his grandchildren, Cassie, Jacob, Jared and Zachery. David was a long time employee of Master Seal Windows. A memorial is being held at his home 368 Grey St. on Saturday March 14th 2009 from 3:00pm- 9:00pm. Anyone wishing to pay their last respects please join us. GIROUX, George It is with great sadness that the family of George Giroux announce his passing at the Welland Hospital on Tuesday March 3, 2009 in his 84th year. Devoted and beloved husband to Mathilda (Fraser) Giroux. Cherished Father of Roch (Cheryl), Pascal (Cheryl), Joel (Tina), France Tisi (Fern) and Danielle Huneault (Russell Legault) all of Welland. George will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Jennifer, Rocky, Stephanie, Felicia, Blake, Jarrett and Emily. He will be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters, Willie (Noella) and Roger of Quebec, Juliette Paulter, Margarite Youst (Nick) both of Cambridge and Georgette Langlois of Brockville. George will also be missed by his mother-in-law Blanche Fraser and his sister-in-law Rejeanne Giroux. Mr. Giroux was predeceased by his parents Emile and Aurea Giroux and 13 brothers and sisters. She also leaves behind her nephew Brian Hantke (wife Kathleen) of Lloydminster, her nieces Doreen Ashllee (husband Pat) and Lori McCrea (husband Robert) of Calgary, Arlene of Irvine, Alberta and her sister-in-law Earlene Barnes of Coldwater. Helen was born in Saskatchewan on May 3rd, 1941 and came to Sudbury in 1960. Over the years, she had been involved with many different organizations, including the Northern Initiative for Social Action. Known to many as a wonderful artist, she also enjoyed writing and crafts. HUNT, Beatrice Mary (Bea) - Passed away peacefully at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009. Bea Hunt (nee O'Hagan) in her 92nd year was the beloved wife of the late James Edward. Loving mother of Marilyn Martin and Dorene Steeves (Buzz). Proud grandmother of Christopher Martin (Susan), Janet Christie and Edgar Steeves (Melanie) as well as her four great-grandaughters Mary Faulconbridge, Jennifer Martin, Melissa Martin and Jacklyn Faulconbridge. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews and many friends. EJEM, Iona Jean (nee Strom) - In loving memory of Iona Jean Ejem (nee Strom) 58 years, who passed away at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, St. Joseph's Health Centre, on Thursday, March 5th, 2009. Iona was born April 3rd, 1950 in Sudbury but lived most of her life in Coniston. After teaching for over 30 years with the Rainbow School board she retired in September 2008. Her greatest passion in life was for her family and home. Married to the love of her life Miro Ejem on July 20th, 1974. She was artistic, loved music, had a passion for dogs, fishing, and her flower gardens. Her loving Nature and amazing sense of humour will be sadly missed by all and never forgotten. TESSIER, Raymond Marcel Joseph - June 13, 1942 - March 5, 2009. It is with great sadness that the Tessier family announces the passing of Ray on Thursday March 5th, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Norma (Lauzon) for 48 years. Loving father of Carol Grover (Mike), Denise Cuprik, Joanne Brenyo (John), Ray Jr., and Gale O'Hearon (Ray). A very proud Papa of Jessica, Darryl, Brent, Mark, Lindsay, Brandon, Jacob, Shannon and Aidan whom he loved dearly. Ray's career as a truck driver led him to see many places and travel different highways. His greatest passion in life was his music. BAZOIAN, Matthew - On March 5, 2009 Dr. Matthew Bazoian at Shalom Village at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Lise (nee Gagne). Brother of Madeleine Spilak, Jean Berberian (Steve), John Bazoian (Betty). Also will be missed by sister-in-law Germaine (Gagne) Poitras, Monique (Darius) Gagne and brother-in-law Gilles Gagne. He will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Matthew was born in Brantford, ON. Attended the University of Toronto Medical School – specializing in Anesthesia in Hartford, Conn. He began his highly successful career at St. Joseph's Hospital and Chedoke McMaster Hospitals. Matthew was a loyal and dependable physician and was admired and loved by all whom he touched. Matthew's many interests were varied and included amongst others medical fields, Hamilton Golf & Country Club, and skiing activities. He was a brilliant, inquisitive wonderful person who was an avid reader and exciting to listen to. Our deep gratitude to Shalom Village for the care and kindness throughout his stay, thank you. VAN HAASTRECHT, Louis “Lou“ Johannes - Peacefully at Stedman Hospice, Brantford after a courageous battle with cancer, Lou passed away on March 5, 2009. At the age of 81, Lou was a beloved husband to Alice for 58 years. He was a loving and selfless father to Margaret (Gordon), Louis (Lorraine), Bruce (Deborah) and Keith and a devoted Opa to his grandchildren, Ryan, Eric, Gary, Craig, Daniel, Joel, Anne, Doug, Derek, Lee, Kyle, and Ronnie. Loving brother to his sister Catrina of the Hague. Predeceased by his parents John and Johanna and brothers John and George. Lou was born in the Hague, Holland January 21, 1928 and at 23 flew to Canada with his bride to begin their new life. While most of his time was dedicated to caring for the family, there was a sparkle in his eye when the subject was horses and sports. He loved the time he spent volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul in Brantford. One of his fondest moments was his 80th Birthday party. His passion for faith allowed him to face death with courage and dignity. For those of us left behind, we will miss him and cherish great memories. The family would like to thank the committed efforts of CCAC with a special thanks to Denise and Jane, the staff and volunteers (his angels!) at Stedman Hospice, Dr. Ung, Dr.Verma, Dr Robinson, Liya and Magdellen at Sunnybrooke. HEIKKILA, Sinikka 1947 - 2009 Sinikka, an incredibly wonderful and courageous woman, passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on March 1st 2009. Loving daughter of Heleena and Olavi Heikkila (predeceased) of Sudbury, dear sister of Jorma, Kay, Jack and Sirkka, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Sinikka will be sadly missed and treasured in memory by her family, her many friends, especially Cheryl, Gerry and Eleanor, and by those whose hearts she touched. In respect of her wishes, Sinikka will be cremated and laid to rest in Sudbury. Friends and neighbours are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, on Saturday March 21st, at 2:00pm.
