John Baptiste Downing, beloved husband of the late Mildred Hogan and dear father of Paul (Johanne Lapointe), Stephen (Nathalie Hainz) and the late James (Elaine Boomer). John was the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Jonathan, Dominic, Erin, Sandra, Jacob, Harrison, Danny, Catherine, Jeremy and Alexandra and also the great-grandfather of Curtis, Derek, Jayden and Jorney. He is survived by his sister Jennie Law. In respect of his wishes cremation was held. No visitation. OBITUARY HELEN BRYCE CAMPBELL (nee GILMOUR) Peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2009, at the age of ninety-three. Predeceased by her son Craig (1991), her sister Margaret (2003) and her beloved Bruce (2008). Survived by her daughter Tracy, son-in-law Richard, grandson Cameron, granddaughter Lyndsey, and nephew David and his family. Helen was a former assistant manager of the McGill University Faculty Club, an avid curler, lawn bowler, long time member of Cedar Park United Church and delivered Meals-on-Wheels for many years. KOWALSKI, Ignacy 2009-03-07 Mr. Ignacy Kowalski passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, March 5, 2009 in Hogarth Riverview Manor. He was born in Karwice, Poland on July 25, 1914. He served during the World War II as a soldier of the 2nd Polish Corps of the British 8th army. He arrived in Canada in November of 1946 as a contract farm worker in Port Arthur. He then worked various construction jobs and later bartended at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 149 until his retirement. On October 5, 1957 he married his wife of almost 50 years, Leokadia, who was widowed with three children. Together they happily raised them and an additional two children. He enjoyed gardening, going for leisurely walks, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his children Irene Del Pino (Don), John Zimowski (Marilyn), Cas Zimowski, Victoria Hill (Jeff), and Henry Kowalski. Grandchildren Debra Bishop (Tom), Paul Del Pino (Michele), Aaron Del Pino (Tanja), Andrew Zimowski (Elizabeth), Karen Zimowski (Michael), Jennifer (Manuel) and Allison Hill (Geoff) and Shannon and Karleen Zimowski. Great Grandchildren Brett, Shaylyn and Alesha Bishop, Ashlynn Hill, and Callia and Makara Del Pino. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Leokadia (2007), his daughter-in-law, Yvonne Zimowski (2001) and family in Poland. The family would like to thank the staff at Hogarth Riverview Manor for the excellent care and compassion given during his stay. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice. NAGY, James - On Thursday, March 5, 2009 James Nagy passed away at the Brantford General Hospital at the age of 80 years. Born in Brantford to the late Elizabeth Sabo Nagy Varga and the late James Nagy Sr., he was predeceased by his brother John (1957) and his wife Irene Kezi Nagy (1999). Left to mourn his passing are his children and their families: Gloria Jean Nagy (David Milne) and daughters Melanie Milne and Margaret Milne Bailey; Randy Nagy (Diana Delk) and daughters Adina, Samantha and Lindsay; Reverend Nancy Elaine Nagy (Ralph Atkin) and daughter Kathleen Jolan Atkin; Michael Nagy and step-sons Kyle and Kevin Willson; and, Edward Nagy (Mary) and sons Adam and Patrick and daughter Sarah. Jim leaves his half brothers Dr. Eugene Varga (Margaret) and Frank Varga of Windsor, and his aunt Helena Sabo (Sister Mary Bernardine of the Grey Nuns of Pembroke) as well as a number of cousins both in Canada and Hungary. Jim was an employee at Massey Ferguson, Foundry Plant (Union Rep for a time) for over thirty years but was forced to retire soon after he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1978. Jim was an elder and clerk of session for over 15 years for Pleasant Ridge Hungarian Presbyterian Church prior to his illness and more recently attended Central Presbyterian Church, where he and his wife Irene had been married. Both were also volunteers at the Petfi Hungarian Cultural Club for many years as well as the Multiple Sclerosis Society. While a patient at St. Joseph's Hospital and also at the Willet Hospital, Jim was president of the resident's council. Ensuring patient's needs were met. Jim was ahead of his time with his water motor invention. He had several partially working models, in the early 1970's, of go-cart sized engines which were powered by water alone but he was not able to get financial help in getting his invention to patent. For the past four years, Jim was a resident at the Leisure World Retirement facility where he received excellent care and compassion. Robert was born and raised in Thorold, educated at St. Michael's College in Toronto and Notre Dame in Welland. He was employed as CEO at local credit unions for more than 25 years, retiring in 1991. Robert “RAP” loved a good card game and was an active member of the St. Catharines Cribbage League. He was also an honorary life member of the Canadian Corp Unit #44, Thorold for services rendered. Robert was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Thorold where he served as an altar boy for 15 years. He was also an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2319, Thorold. SCOTT, Lawrence (Larry) Lee August 5, 1953 - March 4, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of Lawrence (Larry) Lee Scott, beloved husband of Char of Cochrane Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the age of 55 years following a brief illness. Larry was born in Innisfail, AB, in 1953 and grew up in Lethbridge. His working years were spent in Lethbridge and Calgary and he particularly enjoyed his final years working as a driver for Greyhound. Larry was happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. Larry leaves to miss and remember him, his loving wife Char and their two children, of whom he was as proud as a father could be: Shauna Walper and Ryan Paiement. He was equally proud of his two loving grandchildren, dear Melissa and little Daniel. Besides his loving wife of twenty years, Larry will be dearly missed by his dad Gerry Scott of Lethbridge, AB, and his two sisters Peggy Nemeth of Calgary and Bunny Scott (Dutton) of Oakville, ON; as well as many extended family members and friends. Larry was predeceased by his mother Pauline Scott (nee Bahler) in 2002. He will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched. McGIMPSEY, William Chris Stewart (Bill) Bill was born at Calgary, Alberta on July 12, 1941 and passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67 years on March 2, 2009. GREGORSKI, Mary (May) On March 4, 2009, Mary (May) Gregorski of Calgary, passed away at the age of 96 years. Mary is survived by nieces and nephews, daughter-in-law Barb, granddaughter Allison (Scott), great-grandson William, sister Elsie and exceptional friends Dave and Wilma as well as numerous other family and friends. DI CIANO, Giovanni "John" September 16, 1914 - March 6, 2009 John Di Ciano passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2009 at the age of 94 years. John is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Giacinta "Jean"; daughters Agnes (Richard) Banting and Annamaria (Victor) Yancey; four grandchildren, Kari (Craig) Toudy, Jennifer (Ken) Pierce, Chris Banting and Michael Yancey; and four great-grandchildren, Erin and Mark Toudy, Ashley and Sam Pierce. DAVIS-HALL, Albert Douglas October 17, 1932 - March 3, 2009 It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Bert Davis-Hall at the age of 76 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Bert leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-two years Angela, son Greg (Shelley), daughters Alex (Heath), Julie (Graham) and Susan (David), cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Rushton, Zakary, Breanna, Chloe and Hanna, much loved pets Kricket and Flynne, brothers Ted (Shirley) and Jack (Sheila), as well as many dear friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his father George, mother Nellie and eldest brother Bob. Bert was an electrician by trade for forty years and was very talented with his hands. He was well known for being able to build or fix almost anything and for always jumping in to help out anyone with any sort of project. So many people have been grateful for his helping hands, especially his kids for whom there was never a task too big or too small. He was an avid golfer (with a hole in one!) and longtime member of the Calgary Elks Club. He loved the time he spent there playing golf in the summer and shooting pool in the winter and the many Elks buddies that he made over the years. Bert was a strong man with a big personality, an even bigger heart and a quick sense of humour. He was full of opinions and lots of sayings which we already miss and wish we could hear again. Bert was very proud of his family and the sun rose and set on his grandkids. He was a man who loved his life and never missed a chance to tell everyone how very good it was. We are all grateful that Bert was able to leave us in the way that he had hoped..in the home that he loved with his wife by his side. Bert will be always missed and forever in our hearts. MERRILL, Margaret Alice (nee Elliott) Passed away on March 5, 2009, peacefully after a courageous battle in her seventy-second year. She was a devoted and loving wife of 52 years to Bruce, beloved mother to Gary, Audrey (Kevin) and loving grandmother to Christopher and Steven, sister to Howard. She will be sadly missed by her friends and family. Vistitation at: Monday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. followed by prayers at the chapel of the complex. McCONNELL, Edward Graham Frederic Peacefully at the Central Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna B.C. on Thursday, February 12, 2009 on the day of his seventieth birthday, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Anita (nee Duprey). Former husband of Carolyn (nee Daley) and loving father of their children Steven, Cathy, and Colleen. Cherished 'Papa' to Caitlyn, Cameron, and Naithen; Sydney and Matthew; Mitchell and Jamie. Beloved brother to Doug, Pat, Ann and Scott. Predeceased by his parents Edward & Geraldine and brother Randy. Ed was a friend to all in the Peachland community and beyond with his many volunteer positions. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends. A "Celebration of Life" will be held on July 5, 2009.
