KROENING, Doreen (nee Hill) July 17, 1938 - March 4, 2009 Doreen Kroening, beloved wife of Clifford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 after a brief illness. Doreen will be dearly missed by her three daughters, Susan (Alan), Carole (Jim), Christine (James); grandchildren, Emily, Rachel, Eamon and Teagan; step-grandchildren, Jonah, ErinKate, Shaunne, Glenne, and Carianne; sister Eleanor (Rod); brother Don (Fay); her Aunt Gene and Uncle Sandy; sister-in-law Grace; brother-in-law Barry (Janice) and their families. She will also be missed by many friends. Doreen was born in Tofield on July 17, 1938. She moved with her family to Violet Grove in 1942. Doreen went to Edmonton in 1951 to complete her education, and it was there that she met and married Cliff in 1958. They moved to Calgary in 1960 and have lived here since that time. A lifelong learner, Doreen studied alternative health, chemistry, finance, and was an accomplished seamstress. Doreen placed great importance on home and family along with her board work and will be remembered for the time she devoted to others, and for her generous hospitality and gracious entertaining. With her family and many friends she shared interests in golf, bridge and travel. Mrs. Verna Daum October 30, 1935 - March 3, 2009 VERNA DAUM (OSTAPOVICH) October 30, 1935 - March 3, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Verna Daum. After a long and courageous battle with emphysema, with family at her side, Verna peacefully passed away at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. She was predeceased by her first husband, James McLean, mother Effie, father Fred, brother Sam and sisters Nettie, Mary, and Katie. She is survived by her loving husband of 19 years, Rudy Daum, three children Garry (Leslie), Lorrie (Tom), David (Gwen); eight grandchildren; Tara (Kaine), Todd (Deanna), Kristin (Paul), Lisa (Justin), Ryan, Kathleen, James and Alex and 4 great grandchildren Austyn, Nathan, Abigail and Corbin. Verna was born October 30, 1935 and was raised on a small farm near Sheho, Saskatchewan. After 15 years on the farm with her family, Verna entered the work force as a waitress in Nipawin, SK. She later moved into Saskatoon taking a job as a waitress where she met James (Jim) McLean. She also worked at the City Hospital in the case room and painted the interior of houses for a living. Verna spent her life making sure everyone had a place to be and love around them. Her heart and her home were always open to friends, family and even strangers. Her smile and strong hug could turn a bad day around. You always knew where you stood with her. She was always ready to pitch in and help out. Verna enjoyed playing bingo with her family and friends and also enjoyed traveling and camping. The Funeral Service will be held at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7th, 2009. MacGOUGAN, Jean Jean Alberta MacGougan, 97, died Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Beverly Glenmore Center from a combination of old age, a relocation and several falls. Born in Calgary in 1911, she was the eldest daughter of Frank and Joan (Christie) Wonnacott. Jean is survived by daughters Dr. Carol Cowell, Clara Sharp and stepdaughter/niece Joan MacGougan; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Jean was predeceased by her dearly loved husband Frank Cowell; parents Frank and Joan; in-laws Charlie and Bertha Cowell and siblings Patricia MacGougan, Fred Wonnacott, Mary Andrews; husband Malcolm MacGougan, stepson/nephew Stuart MacGougan and son-in-law Dr. William Paul. Her family, music, working with numbers, card games and girl guides brought great joy and challenges to Jean. In her youth, she played violin for dances, silent movies and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She continued to support her love of music by donating her violin to Mount Royal College. Jean was active in the Girl Guide movement for sixty years. A number of girl guide campsites in the Calgary Area were established through the efforts of Jean and others. Jean had many years of enjoyment from playing bridge and crib and was often the winner despite failing eyesight. Jean, will be fondly remembered as the strong willed, independent, determined, fiesty woman, who, after smoking cigarettes for eighty-four years, quit abruptly. She has also been known to say occasionally, that she had a cane and knew how to use it. A very special thank you from the family to all her friends who included Jean in their daily lives with visits, phone calls, reading books, playing cards, listening to music and their care and love, making her life more interesting and tolerable over the past many years. The family is greatly appreciative of their strong advocacy in many of the problems confronting Jean as a senior citizen in Calgary today. Jean requested no Funeral. A family and friends gathering was held in her honour. Her wish was that her ashes be scattered in her beloved mountains. A tree will be planted in her memory on September 20, 2009 by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Home in Lafarge Meadows. If you wish to make a donation to a charity of your choice in memory of Jean, please do so. We will miss her great sense of humour and fiesty independence. THOMAS, Fred - It is with profound sadness the family announces the passing of Fred Thomas on Wednesday March 4th, 2009 at the SRH - St. Joseph's Health Centre at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Elva (Robertson) Thomas of Capreol. Loving father of Ray (wife Adele) of Kanata and Don (wife Frances) of Elliot Lake. Cherished grandfather of Brent, Heather, Tim, Kirk and Janna. Predeceased by his parents James and Maryann (Homley) Thomas, sister Beatrice Neil and brother Harry Thomas. Fred came to Capreol in 1943 to work on the C.N.R. as a trainman. In 1948, he married Elva Robertson of Beachburg. Fred was a longtime and dedicated member of Trinity United Church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In his spare time he was an accomplished square dancer, loved curing and cross country skiing and was an avid horseracing fan. ELLIOTT, Carla Lee - 1942-2009 - It is with great sadness that we announce her peaceful passing at home with family on Thursday March 5, 2009. Carla was born on April 25, 1942 in South Porcupine, raised her family in Elliot Lake and moved back to the Porcupine area in 1994. Beloved wife of the Late John Elliott (2004). Loving mother of Muriel “Lori“ (Dennis) Schwehr, John (Sue) Elliott Jr., Tammy (Steve) Galarneau and Sherri (Mark) Goudie. Known as Bubbee to Nicholas, Natalee, Kyle, Kaylee, Riley, Jordan and Carlee. Loving sister of Sally (Brian) Gilroy and Jim (Yvette) Abramson. She leaves behind her life-long friends Nancy and Jules Gelinas; special friends Yollie and Ernie Fischhofer, and Raye Cutler. Predeceased by her parents Samuel “Chick“ and Muriel Abramson. Carla took great pleasure in nurturing her family, friends and neighbours. She enjoyed life and loved the trees and wildlife in her backyard, which was a playground for her and her grandchildren. Her talent with poetry brought her and many others pleasure with her sense of humour and unique imagination. She was always quick to laugh and has touched many peoples lives with her thoughtfulness and caring. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. LUKE, Arnold Douglas 2009-03-06 Arnold Douglas Luke (the miracle man) of Terrace Bay, Ont., is now resting peacefully. Doug passed away on March 02, 2009 while at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Doug was born on: October 07, 1932 in Missinabi, Ont. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his Wife: Fernande Luke (nee: Huard) and his Children: Patricia Lynn Thomas, Theodore Luke, Michele Gilbert, and Penny Barclay (Robert) as well as his siblings: Jack and Betsy Luke. His Grandchildren: Jacqueline Gilbert, Lindsay Thomas; and Jesslyn and Troy Majeau and Great Grandchildren: Jaron and Johnny Majeau and many extended family members Doug was predeceased by his Parents: David and Margaret (nee: Fletcher) Luke and his sister: Mildred Halliday Doug was a member of the Moose Cree First Nation. Like many other boys raised in northwestern Ontario, Doug played hockey and enjoyed following the N.H.L. As a young man, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway where he began developing his trade as a welder. On October 17, 1959, Doug married Fernande Huard. In 1969, Doug moved his wife and their four children from Schreiber to Terrace Bay after he began working for Kimberly-Clarke Pulp & Paper. In 1988, Doug opened Doug Luke’s Welding Shop, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1999. His professional achievements include welding instructor and inspector. Doug’s enthusiasm for his trade shone through his teaching as he shared his welding knowledge and skills with his second eldest daughter, fellow welders, and other trades people he trained through Confederation College. Doug loved life, his family, and friends. Doug also enjoyed learning, reading, fishing, woodworking, music, playing guitar, jamming with other musicians, swimming, cross country skiing, exercising, and walking in the bush. Doug is remembered for his gentle spirit, his volunteer work: Firefighter; Minor Hockey Coach, Meals-on-Wheels and as a recent member of: St. Martin of Tour‘s Parish Church Choir. Vigil Prayers for Doug will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday March 6, 2009 immediately following Mass and a Resurrection Mass will begin at 11:00am on Saturday March 7, 2009, both at St. Martin of Tour‘s Roman Catholic Church in Terrace Bay. Interment will follow in Terrace Bay Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations to the Food Bank, St. Martin of Tours Parish Building Fund or other charitable organization are greatly appreciated.

LALANNE, Mario ing. MBA 1936-2009 Le 15 février, Mario Lalanne est mort sereinement, chez lui, comme il le voulait. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Hortense Michaud, ses fils Éric (Nancy) et Marc, sa petite-fille Nikki, sa soeur Mariette (Robert Thibodeau) et ses neveux Mathieu et Rafael. Diplômé du Collège Saint-Laurent ('57), de Polytechnique ('62) et de l'École des Hautes Études ('74), il a surtout fait carrière en sidérurgie, de Welland à Montréal, en passant par Sorel et Contrecoeur. Après sa retraite en 2000, malgré le cancer qui l'a emporté, il s'est rendu utile de plusieurs façons. Ainsi, avec la foule d'astronomes amateurs du Galaxy Zoo, il a catalogué des milliers de galaxies, aidant à découvrir un type de galaxies inconnu jusque-là. Comme propriétaire de 200 actions de la plus grosse compagnie au monde, il a présenté une résolution qui fut endossée, tant en 2007 qu'en 2008, par 7% des votes enregistrés par les cinq millions d'actionnaires d'ExxonMobil, enjoignant la compagnie de renseigner ses clients, à chacune de leurs transactions, sur la quantité totale de CO2 émis par l'essence ou le carburant diesel qu'ils achètent. L'élégant papillon Alucita Ialannei a été nommé en son honneur en 2004. La crémation a eu lieu en février. Pour honorer sa mémoire, on suggère un don à la Fondation Muséums nature de Montréal (biodôme – insectarium – jardin botanique – planétarium) ou à celle du CHUM. DAVIDGE, Dorothy Louise 1922 - 2009 On February 27, 2009, Dorothy Louise Davidge (Willis) of St. Albert, Alberta (formerly of Smiths Falls, Ontario) passed away at home, peacefully in her sleep at age 86. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her son Robert (Beverley), daughter Sandra (Kim), grandchildren Kari (Terry), Jesse (Cheryl), Matthew (Robin), Geneva (Dez), Andrea (Vincent), great grandchildren, Isabella, Skye, Owen, Kyryn, and Alasdair. Dorothy was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Owen Sydney (Dag) Davidge. Dorothy was born and raised in Brockville, Ontario, then lived in Montreal and Ottawa before moving to the Smiths Falls area in 1983. She loved to travel, sail, read, knit, paint, and play the piano. She was a very active member of Trinity United Church until she moved to Alberta in summer 2008 to be with her daughter. JONES, Leonard After 75 melodious years, Len Jones passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 after a sudden illness. By his side was his cherished companion Mariette Goldfinch. Beloved father of Douglas (Alice), Laura (Jeffrey Sutherland), Wanda and dear stepfather of Stefanie and Jennifer (Mathieu) and loving grandfather of Sharain, Shannon, Nazare, Akeen, Jamar, Thamar and Kiara. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his brother Howie and his extended family Leon (Paulette), Anita (Alan), Renee (Joe) and Theresa, and his close friends Ed, Win, Jim, Angelo, Bill and Wray. Len leaves behind a large circle of family and friends, many of whom were with him during his final days. Born and raised in Montreal, Len was a longtime patron of the Montreal Jazz Fest and was a passionate supporter of the local music scene. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home at 5610 Sherbrooke St. West. Daughter of the late James Rice and Belle Sadleir, cherished step-daughter of Arthur Dawe. Widow of the late Bill Leslie. Beloved mother of Jane (Brian Dickson), John (Bonnie Brown), Mary (Hisao Matsui) and Cathy (Alan MacIntyre). Beloved grandmother and great-grandmother of Christine, Matthew, Jeremy, Shintaro, David, Georgia, Alexander and Emily. Our thanks to the many caregivers who have touched her life with their kindness over the years. JAMES, Jean (nee Tisdell) December 26, 1926 - March 3, 2009 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jean James announces the unexpected but peaceful passing of their beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Jean was born in Calgary in 1926, and grew up in Sunnyside with her sister Olive and her brothers Harry and Gordon. She met her husband Desmond while skating at the Crystal Ice Rink, and together they formed a wonderful partnership that lasted for over sixty-five years. She remained in Calgary for her entire life, except for the vacations she spent on the West Coast and Windermere Lake, where many lasting friendships and memories were formed. Jean was the "nicest person I know" for many people. She enjoyed helping others and her positive outlook on life and sunny smile brightened many lives. Jean survived cancer as a young woman and other adversities afterwards. Through it all, she remained positive and joyful around others; she was an inspiration to us. Grandma Jean always had a warm hug, an "I love you", unconditional love, and words of encouragement for her grandchildren. We take comfort in knowing that our dear Jean is watching over all of us. She will live on forever in her family's hearts and her grandchildren's smiles. Jean is survived by her husband Des; sons, Tom and Robert; daughters-in-law, Eileen and Tanya; grandchildren, Stephanie, Marielle, Dylan, and Hunter; brother Gordon and his wife Mary; sister-in-law Leona; as well as by nieces, nephews, and many friends.
