HENDERSON, Phyllis Mary (nee Pedley) - Passed away peacefully at Pleasant Manor (Virgil) on Friday February 20, 2009 in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her husband Robert (1996) and her son Bruce (2008). She will be sadly missed by her son Bob (Karen), daughter-in-law Rosanne and granddaughters Jennifer (Ross) and Heather (Steve). Loving great- grandmother of Jackson, Julia and Sydney. Phyllis is survived by her sister Doreen, sisters-in-law Marilyn and Carol and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brothers Maurice, Raymond and Ernest. Phyllis was born in England and came to Canada in 1924. She lived in St. Catharines for most of her adult life and moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1966. Phyllis was an avid bridge player, enjoyed golf, reading and gardening and was a former member of the Horticultural Society. She was a member of the “Artists Six” and enjoyed countless hours of painting and fellowship with them. In accordance with Phyllis's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday February 27th at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Niagara-on- the-Lake, at 11:00 am followed by a reception in the Church Hall. The family would like to thank Dr. Reimer and the staff at Pleasant Manor for their on going compassion and care. GYORKE, Helen Margaret - formerly of Port Colborne passed away at the Extended Care of the Welland County General Hospital on Friday February 20, 2009 in her 90th year. SPENCER, Evelyn Ward - Died peacefully on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009, at the home of her daughter. She was in her 91st year. Evelyn was born April 29th, 1918 in Port Colborne and was the youngest daughter of Jean and William Lewis of Port Colborne. Her family then moved to Toronto where Evelyn grew up and attended school. She served in the Canadian Women's Army Corp during the Second World War. While stationed in Washington DC, she met her first husband, Ronald Trevor Webster from Cornwall, England. Following her marriage to Ron and up until the birth of her daughter Suzanne Jane, Evelyn worked as a receptionist for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Port Colborne. Later Evelyn returned to work as Head Secretary at the National Harbours Board, also in Port Colborne. Several years after Ron's death, Evelyn married John Spencer of Port Colborne. The two of them did much traveling and spent many winters in Florida. While still in good health, Evelyn was very active in the community. She attended Central United Church, was involved in the UCW and was also a Member of the Church Council. Her faith and devotion were always very important to her. She canvassed for many charitable organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and continually sponsored impoverished children in third world countries. She was also a member of the Thomas A. Lannan chapter of the IODE where she held many positions on the Executive Council. Evelyn was an avid bridge player, enjoyed traveling and always seemed to have an arts and crafts project on the go. Evelyn was predeceased by her mother and father, Jean and Bill Lewis; her siblings, Mabel (Peg), Harold, Helen, Laura and Lillian; and both her husbands, Ronald Webster and John Spencer. She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Jane Webster and her granddaughter, Rebecca Evelyn Webster of London, Ontario; also by nephews and nieces, Ross and Donna Tuck and John and Darlene Tuck of Port Colborne; Yvonne Heney of Toronto; Bob and Carol Bell and Tim and Brenda Hodgson of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Bill and Jan Hodgson of Australia; Jane and David Rice of Barrie; and numerous cousins and relatives in the Port Colborne and Toronto areas. Visitations will be held on Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 between 6:00-8:00 pm at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL in London, and on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 between 6:00-8:00 pm at Davidson's Funeral Home in Port Colborne. A memorial service will be held at Davidson's Funeral Home on Friday, February 27th, 2009 at 2:00 pm. A private family interment will occur at a later date. STILES, Nancy (Agnes) Hunter (nee Taylor) - After a life well lived, peacefully at the Toronto Grace Health Centre on Saturday, February 21, 2009 a week prior to her 97th birthday. Beloved wife of Douglas Stiles (deceased 2004). Dear mother of Elizabeth Stiff of Midhurst, Nancy Stiles (deceased 2001) and Ruth Williams (David) of Calgary. Sadly missed by grandchildren David and Douglas Stiff, James and Elizabeth Williams and sister-in-law Marna. GRAHAM, Hazel - A resident of Chatham, Hazel Graham died peacefully at Chatham- Kent Health Alliance on Sunday February 22, 2009 at the age of 90. Born in Aldborough Township on July 31, 1918, daughter of the late Hugh & Mary (Haywood) Johnston. Beloved wife of the late Carson Graham (2007). URE, Betty - A resident of Ridgetown. It is with extreme sadness that we advise of the untimely death of Betty at the age of 58, following a courageous 16 month battle with liver cancer. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Allen and their 3 daughters, Krista and Stephen Shaw, Karen and Norm Lyons and Karolyn Ure and Kris Van Eerd. Missing their grandmother are her 4 grandchildren, Brandon and Allison Shaw and Lauryn and Ellis Lyons. Also surviving are her brothers Gerald Graves and John Iskra, Larry and Sandy Hillman and one sister, Terry Graves. Betty was the daughter of the late George and Marie Graves and daughter-in-law of the late Mel and Rosa Ure. Betty was a proud former member of the Chatham Sweet Adelines Chorus and the London Sweet Adelines. She was a past warden and Sunday School Teacher of the Church of The Advent, Ridgetown and a past warden of the Parish of the Transfiguration. She became a guiding light in the Kiwanis Club of Ridgetown. Betty's family would like to thank especially Dr. John Button and his office staff for their constant support and care of Betty. Special thanks to all of the nurses at CKHA 4th floor Medicine B and Betty's guardian angel through the final 3 days, Lisa Ellis. We cannot express enough gratitude for the wonderful care given by Dr. Haddad in Chatham and Dr. Alam and Maureen Dorion at the Windsor Regional Cancer Clinic. The nurses in the Cancer Treatment area are some of the most wonderful people we met during this journey. Sandee Campbell has been the glue that helped us through this time with her home care and support whenever we needed her. BRAY, Stéphane Louis Paul - After a courageous battle with cancer, Stéphane, in his 30th year, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, February 21st 2009, at the Blind River District Health Centre. Beloved son of Diane Ladéroute Bray and the late Alain Bray, dear brother of Nathalie and Michel, dear grandson of Lucille and Albert Ladéroute, all of Blind River, predeceased by grandparents Agathe and Paul Bray of Hearst. Stéphane will be sadly missed by his family including numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his friends. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and participating in a variety of sports. Stéphane touched the hearts of many. ZAINA, Angela 2009-02-24 Mrs. Angela Zaina, age 68 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, February 22, 2009, with her family by her side. Angela was born and raised in Pordenone, Italy; moving to Canada with her parents in 1958. She was married to Sergio Zaina on July 9, 1960. They resided in Westfort where they raised their family. Angela was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who especially enjoyed family times. She will be fondly remembered for her beautiful flower gardens, knitting and wonderful baking. She was a member of St. Agnes‘ Church and the Ladies Venet Society. Angela is survived by her husband Sergio, children Grace (David) Petrick, Jennifer Zaina, Joseph (Laura) Zaina, grandchildren Andrew, Cassandra (James) and Alana Petrick, Daniel and Lauren McGinnis, Kayla, Victoria and Matthew; great grandchildren Brandon and Garret; sisters Bruna in Italy and Antoinetta in British Columbia. Nieces, nephews, and numerous close friends also survive in Canada and Italy. Predeceased by her parents, Germano and Genoveffa Vettorel. GRILLS, Audrey Joan (Croteau) October 24, 1915 - February 21, 2009 Audrey Joan Grills (Croteau) passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2009. She is survived by her daughter Mary Axworthy, son-in-law Trevor, her grandchildren Caitlyn and Wynn and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Grills in October, 2005. Audrey was born in Winnipeg, MB where she lived most of her life before moving to Calgary in 1990. She was a graduate of the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing (1938) and had a long and distinguished professional career in nursing and hospital administration. She was a Charter and Founding Member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE). She retired in 1980 as the Director of Nursing at the Misericordia General Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. During her nursing career she also worked at the Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals, and hospitals in Detroit, Chicago, and Vancouver and in the early days, at the Pickle Crow Gold Mine in northern Ontario. Audrey also served with the Canadian Army during World War II as a Lieutenant (Nursing Sister) with Number 25 Canadian General Hospital. She was stationed in Newfoundland and served overseas in England, France and Belgium with her good friend Elma Willson (Copeland). She was Past President of the Canadian Association of Nursing Sisters units in Winnipeg and Calgary. After moving to Calgary in 1990, Audrey volunteered at the Holy Cross Hospital and worked in the Kerby Centre Library for many years. She was devoted to her two grandchildren, Caitlyn and Wynn and spent many hours chauffeuring them to soccer games, and other activities. She loved poetry, music, travel and the outdoors and was an exceptionally loving and giving person. Audrey spent the last three years at the Colonel Belcher Veterans' Care Centre. The family would like to recognize and thank the staff at the Colonel Belcher, particularly those on the Highlander Unit, and her loving companion Maude Lecorps, for the wonderful care they provided to Audrey. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 27, 11:00 a.m. at Scarboro United Church, 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB. DICK, Reuben Family Well Loved; Friends Well Made; Life Well Lived Reuben Dick passed away in Brooks on February 22, 2009 at the robust age of 93 years, having "got his money's worth out of life". Born in McClusky, North Dakota, Reuben moved to Cluny, Alberta with his family when he was eight years old, returned to South Dakota for a few years and came back to Cluny again at the age of twelve, where the Dick family remained for many years. Reuben married his sweetheart Ida Konschuh in November 1938. Together, they farmed and ranched and milked cows in Cluny, Springbank and Strathmore. They moved to Calgary with three children in 1945 where Reuben managed Concrete Drainage Pipe. In 1956, they transferred with that job to Lloydminster, Alberta. In "Lloyd", Reuben was busy as President of a number of organizations including the Gun Club, Lions Club and Curling Club. He was also General Manager of the Lloydminster Meridians Baseball Team for a few years. In 1962, the family returned to Calgary where Reuben sold mutual funds with Federated Growth, while continuing to enjoy curling, trapshooting, fishing and more. He was well known for his speaking abilities and Ida would often say "he never met a stranger". In 1968, Reuben moved with his wife and two youngest children to Cassils, just outside of Brooks, to return to farming and ranching. Then in 1974, they moved into town where they remained, moving into Orchard Manor in 2001. While in Brooks, Reuben worked for Bow Slope Shipping, managed some residential properties and began his long-time specialty advertising business "Dick Sales". Many an area business owner bought pens, caps and calendars from Reuben over a cup of coffee or possibly a game of crib. Reuben was predeceased by his dear wife Ida in 2002 and all his cherished brothers and sisters - Helmuth, Esther, Bertha, Herb, Olga, Theodore, Elizabeth and Jim. He is survived by his five devoted children: Ted (Debbie Kirk) Dick of Calgary; Faye (Doug) Lewis of Portland, Oregon; Lorna Dysart of Calgary; Dennis (Joan) Dick of Gwynne, Alberta; and Cheryl (Ray Burgess) Dick of Lethbridge. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud. He is survived by numerous other relatives including nieces, nephews and cousins as well as friends who will all miss him, his card playing and his humour very much. HENSON, Gerald 'Gerry' Jack Henry - Peacefully at home, after a battle with cancer fought with great courage and strength, Gerry was ushered into the hands of God on Sunday, February 22, 2009, surrounded by family at the age of 61 years. He was the loving and devoted husband of Pauline (nee Loewen) for 37 years. Beloved and respected father of Les Henson (Mary Ann Robert), Krystena Jorgensen (Bob Whyte) and Joni Henson (John Beadle). Grandpa to Rachel Hensen, Eric and Scott Jorgensen (father Chris Jorgensen). Son of the late Jack Henson and Caroline (nee Tregonning) Henson. Brother of Audrey McLeod (Glenn), Barry (Marsha), Ron (Myrna), Alice Bruce (Phillip) and the late Carolyn Parker (Gary). Son-in-law of the late Henry and Marie Loewen. Brother-in-law of Thomas Loewen (Margaret), Ruth MacInnes (Frank Haywood), Victor Loewen (Lynda Gagnon), David Loewen (Jane), Elisabeth Schloo (Andreas) and Julia Schloo (Daniel). BULL, (Joyce) Arline 2009-02-24 Sept. 29, 1935-Feb. 21, 2009 Joyce Arline Bull (Bjerke), age 73 years passed away Saturday February 21, 2009 at Bethammi Nursing Home, St. Joseph’s Heritage, Thunder Bay, Ontario, following a lengthy illness. Born in Port Arthur, Ontario to Ruby and Hjalmer Bjerkesteun, Arline spent her high school years in Atikokan, Ontario. Arline graduated from McKellar Nursing School in 1956 and worked 25 years as an Operating Room Nurse, mostly with McKellar General Hospital in Fort William, Ontario. Arline was an avid skier and member of Mount McKay and Candy Mountain ski areas. She served with many organizations including St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club Ladies Auxiliary, the Shebandowan Camper’s Association, and the Maple Crest Towers Condominium Executive donating her time and talents. Arline was an accomplished seamstress making clothes for those less fortunate, baking for charitable groups to raise money, and pursued her interests in crafts. Arline also supported local Thunder Bay Arts and Culture including the Thunder Bay Symphony and local theatre organizations. Arline spent her retirement years at her beloved Shebandowan Lake Camp with her husband James where she enjoyed hosting bridge tournaments, gardening, and sharing the summer months with her children and grandchildren. There was nothing more important to Arline than family. Arline is survived by her husband James of 49 years, son Jeff of London, Ontario, daughter Jocelyn (Garbutt) and son-in-law Byron Garbutt of Bowmanville, Ontario, cherished grandchildren Michael, Spencer, and Matthew Bull of London, Kimberley, Ryan, Kaitlyn, and Daryn Garbutt of Bowmanville. Arline is also survived by her sister, Loraine Tribe (Bjerke), brother-in-law, Douglas Tribe of Atikokan, Ontario, and sister-in-law Carol Bull (Raynard) of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend thank-you to the family and friends who spent time with Arline during her prolonged illness, and to the nursing staff at Thunder Bay Interim Care, and Bethammi Nursing Home for their care. The family would like to also extend special thank-you to Donalda and Norman Galloway, Rev. Bert Vancook, and to friend Julie Cooper who Arline called her ’angels from heaven’ in assisting with her care needs. WINDLE, Marlene, BAcc/BSc, CGA Peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on Sunday evening, February 22nd, 2009. Marlene Teresa Catherine "Mar" Windle of Green Meadow Lane, Arnprior died of complications arising from lung cancer at the age of 49 years. Born in Renfrew, work and study took Marlene as far away as New Zealand. She eventually returned to Ottawa to work behind the scenes at the Centrepointe Theatre and later became the Audit Manager for the Nuclear Safety Commission of Canada. During this period, she fell deeply in love and returned to the Ottawa Valley where she and Keith MacLean were married August 26th, 2006. She was a great lover of Celtic history and music and a member of St. John Chrysostom Church in Arnprior. Beloved daughter of Mrs. Eileen Windle (late Jack) of Renfrew. Cherished wife and best friend of Keith. Dearly loved sister of Gail Murphy (Harold) of Castleford, Paddy Windle (Chris Romanko) of Edmonton, Brenda Windle of Arnprior, Johnny Windle (Jackie Dowdall) of Renfrew, Kevin Windle (Anne Margaret) of Ottawa, Linda Windle (Mike Somerville) of Toronto and Dr. Sheila Windle (Tim Lamantia) of Windsor. TENHUNEN, Martha (Koivu) 2009-02-24 Peacefully on Saturday Feb 21st, 2009 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in her 87th year with her family members around her, Martha (Koivu) passed on to be with the loved ones who have gone before her - husband Ewald, parents Alex and Anna Koivu, brothers Arthur and Reino, step brothers Olavi Smedberg and Arne Matson, step sister Aili Letho, sister Esther Kapush, son Alfred and grandsons Troy, Kyle and Nick Vowles. Martha will be dearly missed by her children Shirley (Gerald Garneau), Arne (Helen), Arthur (Barbara), Albert, Beverly, Ilona Matheson and Archie (Grace); grandchildren Randy, Nadina (Mike Kelso), Dana Vowles, Andy (Melanie), Curtis, Scott (Renee), Trevor (Lindsey), Sherry (Rob Jarvis), Kelsey, Shaun, Kim, Carl Matheson, Nathan Matheson (Carrie), Amanda and Christopher; great grandchildren Aaron, Brent, Kari, Cole, Clay, Carter (and one on the way), Ethan, Bradon, Bradley, Michelle, Samantha, Nicolas, Shayla, Travis, Tyler, Randy, Amilia and Sophie. Also survived by dear friend Ronald Kangas and numerous family members in Canada, U.S. and Finland.
