LIEBELT, FRED - (1932-2009) The family announces with sorrow his death at the Timmins and District Hospital on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at age 76 years. Loving husband of Bernadette Nolet-Liebelt and dear father of Kenneth of Calgary. Step- father of Ronald (Louise) Nolet of Winnipeg and Monique Nolet of Trenton and grandfather of Aaron Nolet (Norma) of Sarnia, Curtis Nolet (fiance Jenny) of Pembroke and great-grandfather of Nicholas and Patton. Brother of Henry (Cynthia) of Calgary, Maria, Renate (Alfred) Voit and Gisala all of Germany. Pre-deceased by his parents Albert and Martha Leibelt, sister Sophia Stoller and brother Ronald. Fred was well known in the city as a longtime taxi driver. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 from Notre Dame de la Paix Church. Gladys is predeceased by her parents Hugh and Catherine (Wartman) Day. Gladys is predeceased by her husbands Clare Clarke and Ross Colquhoun, and also by sister Grace and brothers Collamer (Joan) and Warren. Gladys is survived by her brother Arnold Day (Noreen O'Neill) and her brother- in-law Dr. Kenneth Clarke. Gladys is also survived by her sister-in-law Joan. She will be fondly remembered by nephew Ron Day (Susan), nieces Debbie Willette, Sandy Evans (Rod), Cindy Wighton, Wendy White (Mike), Toby Covell (Dan) and their families. He worked at Falconbridge for 25 years until his retirement in 1984. He started the 1st fire department in Cartier and was their Fire Chief for 15 years. Len spent many hours at camp on Geneva Lake. He was an avid dart player and loved to watch curling. He leaves a rich legacy of love and commitment. VASSBOTN, Rolf - Died peacefully in the arms of Mary, his beloved wife, at Cassellholme on Friday, February 20, 2009, in his 79th year. Rolf was the loving father of Jan of Edson Alberta, Peter (Phyllis Yew) of Singapore, Gary (Wenda Caswell) of Ottawa, and Chris of Doha, Qatar. He was especially fond of, and will be sadly missed by, his two granddaughters Erin and Jane. He is survived by his brother Kjell and sister Aase Lill, both residing in his mother country, Norway. Rolf was a self-made man. He arrived in Canada aboard a freighter, a Viking in search of his destiny. This came in the form of Mary, a nurse of Irish descent, who married him and made their first home in Kingston, Ontario. It was here that Rolf embarked on a career in the construction industry. He rose to become the Chief Building Inspector for the city of North Bay, a city for whom he served for over 25 years, demonstrating great strength of character and integrity throughout his time. “Building” was his life's purpose, be it a city, a home, or a family. It was natural that he chose to build a home on the shore of Trout Lake, and adopt a lifestyle that cherished outdoor activities above all else, as the woods, waters, and mountains of Norway were never far from his thoughts. He loved sailing above all else, and was a leader in the Trout Lake Sailing Fleet. His love of skiing, camping, and island cottage life knew no bounds, and Rolf's joy could always be heard and felt by the wonderful families with whom he shared these moments. This joy will forevermore echo along Trout Lake to Turtle Lake, to Nipissing Ridge, and reside at the fireplace that is the centerpiece of his island cottage. Upon retirement his drive never faltered, even as his body showed its age and the wear of years of hard work. He maintained the house, and always had one hundred projects underway, while guiding his sons to successful careers, and volunteering his time to the Cancer Society. His crowning achievement was probably preparing the house and waterfront for Peter's wedding this past summer. Too frail to pitch in, he sat unsteadily but defiantly on the dock waving the cane and directing operations that ultimately proved his sons could carry on in his stead, rebuilding the dock, moving it three feet to the left, relaying the stonework, all to align it with the house, the house that Rolf built, the home to the family that Rolf built. Friends may call at the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday 25 February from 2-4 pm. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 4 pm. His ashes will be interred at the All Saints Mausoleum. SANDS, Stephen Class A Automotive Technician Sands Auto - Suddenly as a result of a tragic accident, on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at the age of 47. Stephen, beloved husband and best friend of Heather, for 12 years. Loving dad and hero of Corey (Jenna Flood), Megan and Jordan. Cherished son of Alfred and Gail Sands, and son-in-law of Mervin and Veronica Harris. He will be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters Rick, Kathy, Brian (Corinne), Robin (Iris) and Trish LeGrow (Ed), his sister-in-law Kimberly Mundell (Randee) and by his nieces and nephews Stephanie (Tim), Ashley, Amy, Amanda (T.J.), Tylor (Jess), Curtis, Brandon, Chris, Myriah, Brooke and Dustin. Stephen will also be fondly remembered by his many friends. Resting at the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME (1900 John Counter Blvd.) on Wednesday from 1-4 and 6-9 pm. CLARK, Douglas (Retired from Stelco) - Member of the Thousand Island Bluegrass Association. Enjoyed playing his homemade upright Bass that he built with his brother Buddy. Favorite pastime was playing music and spending time with his family. After a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by family, Douglas passed away on February 21, 2009 at the Kingston General Hospital. Devoted husband of 52 years to Elsie (Day). Loving father of Lennie (Heather) of Waterford, John (Colette) of Lyndhurst, Bill of Gananoque and Debbie (Mark) Walker of Wantage New Jersey. Grandpa to Andy, Marcia, Dennis, Jeff and Emily Clark, Shelby and Breanna Johnston, Step grandfather of Krysta and James Clark. Great grandfather of Rylee and Jake. MARTYN, Donna Anabel (nee Reid) - In loving memory of Donna Anabel Martyn (nee Reid), 72 years, who passed away Saturday afternoon, February 21st, 2009 at the SRH - Memorial Site. Beloved wife of Gerry Martyn for over 51 years. Loving mother of Mariann Browne (husband Graham) of Burlington, Joanne LoStracco (husband Rob) of Guelph and Reid Martyn of Sudbury. Cherished grandmother of Matthew, Scott, Nicholas and Tiana. She is also survived by her sister Jeanne and predeceased by her sisters Margaret Hathaway and Gloria Reeves, her brother Bob Reid, her parents Andrew and Helen Reid and her nephew David Vance. Dearest sister-in-law of Lea Seymour (Art). Loving aunt to Donna Medina, Christopher Service (Sharon), Anne Reeves, Lynne Michalewski (John). Donna was born and raised in Toronto and attended Adam Beck Public School and Malvern Collegiate. She graduated from Toronto Teacher's College in 1954. After graduation, she taught grades one and two at Bancroft Public School in the former Neelon Garson Township. She also taught Adult Literacy at Cambrian College and supplied at various public schools in Levack, Sudbury and Lively. Donna taught Adult Literacy for the learning disabled and Macramé courses at Lively District Secondary School. She taught Sunday school for many years in the Walden area and was a volunteer literacy teacher at Lively High. Donna was at one time the chairperson of the Lively Unit of the Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Naughton Christian Women's Group. Recently she attended Cornerstone Pentecostal Church in Lively and Glad Tidings in Sudbury. She was a kind and gracious lady, a devoted wife and mother whose most important interests in life were her family and her deep faith. In better health, she enjoyed tennis, cross country skiing, camping, canoeing, swimming, art, music, reading, cooking and travelling. After Gerry's retirement, they had traveled to Britain, South America, the Caribbean and spent time in Florida and Texas. She recently traveled to the Holy Land, which was one of her biggest dreams. For many years, Donna fought a gallant struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. During her last hours she was a witness to all as she calmly and bravely experienced the “peace beyond all understanding“. (Philippians 4:7) with her loving family by her side, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints“ (Pslam 116:15). Funeral Service in the R.J. GRASLEY, Gerald “Gerry” James - Formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, ON passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2009. Husband of Irene (nee Gil). Proud father of Michael (Lisa) and Kevin (Jessica). Adoring Papa of Dutch and “Tulip”. Predeceased by his parents Maynard and Lillian Grasley and father-in-law George Gil. He will be greatly missed by his sisters Lynne (Allan) and Shelley, mother-in-law Eleonora Gil and numerous family members and friends. Gerry will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, loyalty and devotion to family. He was a model of courage and determination a person you could always depend on. He will be missed. GLOFCHESKIE, Zita Anne (nee Shalla) Peacefully, surrounded by her family, early Sunday morning February 22, 2009 in Barry's Bay, at age 85. Predeceased by her husband Bronas and infant son Joseph. Survived by her children John of Burnaby, Ron of Calgary, Peter (Beverly Flynn) of Barry's Bay, Mary (Clifford Blank) of Barry's Bay, Gerard (Nancy Brown) of Arnprior, Michael of Ottawa, and Edward (Cheryl Hartwig) of Barry's Bay. She leaves behind her twelve grandchildren: Sarah, Samuel, and Natalie Glofcheskie; Joshua, Aaron and Isaac Blank; Adam, Luke, Grace, and Rachel Glofcheskie; and Jacob and Hannah Glofcheskie. Zita was the fifth and last surviving of the eight children of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Shalla of Barry's Bay. As a devoted teacher, church and community leader, Zita touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew her. Family and friends are invited to visit at the O'Reilly Funeral Home in Barry's Bay on Monday from 7 to 9 pm, and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Galen Paul The death of Galen Lee (PJ) Paul of Burnt Church, NB, occurred in Burnt Church, NB, on Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at the age of 35. Born in Newcastle, NB, he is the son of Irene (Barnaby) Paul of Burnt Church, NB and the late Lionel Paul. Theresa A. Astles Mrs. Theresa A. Astles formerly of the Harper Rd Miramichi, NB passed away peacefully on Monday Feb 16th at the Mount St Joseph Nursing Home at the age of 78. She was born in Douglastown, NB., the daughter of the late Clifford & Katherine (Driscoll) Grattan.
