ABBOTT, Edna (nee Heffernan). Born February 23, 1925. Passed peacefully after a valiant, feisty struggle with family by her side in the early hours of February 4, 2009. Cherished wife of 60+ years of William (Bill) Abbott, devoted mother of Steve (Helga), Janice (Ron Shearing), Terry, Laurie, Wendy (Chris). Dear sweet Gramma to Ryan Shearing, Adam Rosen and Emily Rosen. Predeceased by her brother Pat, sisters Florence (Sis), Joan and Helen. She will be sadly missed by her wonderful friends at Chateau Royal Residence, as well as her long-time neighbour-friends in Ste. Rose. Our gratitude is extended to the Lakeshore General Hospital, especially to the caring staff in Intensive Care (Heather, Concordia and Michelle) and 4th Floor West (especially Esther) for their support and to Onieka, Avril and Laura and caring staff at the Chateau Royal. FIRTH, Lark E. Anna (nee Guilbault) Born on February 8, 1951, died tragically in Cranbrook, BC on January 30, 2009. Lark leaves behind her best friend and loving husband of twenty-one years, Bob Firth; daughters, Kari, Lisa Marie, Lisa Rose, Diana and Shanan; and her dearly loved grandchildren, Conor, Kevin, Chelsea, Sara, Jaden, Dallas, Presley, Breanna, Anthony, Chalsey, Mark, Steven and Brandon; brothers, Jim, Cliff, Jack and Bob; sisters, Reta and Samantha. Lark also leaves behind many, many friends as a testament to the wonderful woman she was. HAYES, Douglas (Doug) December 4, 1931 - February 3, 2009 Doug Hayes of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the age of 77 years, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Doug worked for Texaco as he migrated across the country with his family. He then ventured into a successful and rewarding career in real estate. Over the years, Doug enjoyed playing golf and travelling to sunny Arizona. He loved a good card game, be it a daily Cribbage match or Bridge with his buddies. Doug was proud to be a member of the P.C. Party and volunteered his expertise on the computer. GRIFFIN, Robert Peter - Born July 19, 1932, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2009, beloved husband of Elizabeth Anne Griffin of Markdale. He will be greatly missed by his wife and his family, his children, grand-children; brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles: Cathy, Cynthia, Rick, Susan, Marianne, Giselle, David, Derek, Laura, Don, Nancy, Joyce, Ed, Kevin, Tina, Anne-Marie, Lucille, Mark, Jean Francois, Brad, Cecelia, Lillian, Maurice and Pat, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Jack and Irene Griffin. Robert obtained his civil engineering degree from Royal Military College at Queen's University in 1956. Marrying his wife Anne that year, he then served as a Lieutenant with Canada's Armed Forces in post-War Germany. On his return to Canada, he embarked on a life-long career of teaching math and physics. In 1968 he moved to Markdale and became the Vice- Principal of Grey Highlands Secondary School when the school opened, teaching there for almost 20 years. He also spent part of his career as principal of Beavercrest Elementary School. After retirement, he continued to help young students as a volunteer tutor. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, telling them jokes, and sharing their interests. He was a creative handyman, building and fixing things around the house to meet his family's needs. He was interested in debating the political issues of the day and volunteered his time to help provincial and federal candidates. He was an active member of his Church and a volunteer for many causes, including driving cancer patients to treatment and assisting at the local food bank. An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing many rounds in the Grey-Bruce area as well as in Mississippi and Alabama where he and Anne travelled for many winters. Despite a long-term lung illness and other health problems that became increasingly severe in his later years, he always kept his sense of humour, an interested mind, and empathy for the less fortunate. He loved to encourage children to read. You can celebrate his memory by giving a book to a child. Or, if you desire, memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund at St. Stanislaus Church in Chatsworth; Doctors Without Borders; the I.C.U. at Grey-Bruce Regional Health Centre, or the charity of your choice. Thanks to the staff of the I.C.U. at GBRHC who treated him with such skill, respect and kindness. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Stanislaus Church, McNab Street, Chatsworth on February 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the church. TAYLOR, Helen June - June 7, 1925 - February 4, 2009. With family by her side, Helen June Taylor nee Lambert passed away February 4, 2009 at Extendicare York, Sudbury. Helen is predeceased by her husband Ken (1925-1979) whom she married May 4, 1949. Born in Barrie, Ontario June 7, 1925, Helen was the daughter of William and Mabel (Etherington) Lambert. She is survived by her sons Greg and his wife Denise Fraser, Gary and his partner Cathy Debassige, and David, all of Sudbury; two sisters, Doris Hughes (Earl) of Ottawa, and Marion Bigelow of Barrie; daughter in law Sharon Cooper; grandchildren Erin Robinson (Jeff) of Walton, Ontario, Jodi Robertson (Adrian) of Vancouver, Shannon Taylor, Dawn Debassige, Tiffany and Ashley Taylor, and Beth and Kevin Taylor of Sudbury; three great granddaughters Grace, Emma and Ava Robinson, as well as four step grandchildren, Mark Fraser (Jodi), Renee Hull (Chris), Jason Fraser (Jennifer), and Jeni King (Jody) and their children Chase Fraser, Samantha, Allysa and Joseph Hull, Emma and Abby Fraser, and Hendrix King, all of Sudbury. As a young woman Helen was involved in the choir at Collier Street United Church in Barrie, her beautiful soprano voice garnered her acclaim and many awards. In the early 1960's she was asked to sing with the Toronto Philharmonic. In Sudbury Helen sang with the choirs at St. Andrews and St. Peters United Churches. In 1953 Helen and Ken moved from Barrie to Sudbury and Ken took over managing John Bazaar Jewellery. In 1962 the couple purchased the business and the name was changed to Ken Taylor Jewellery. The business was purchased by their son in 1977. Over the years Helen enjoyed taking craft classes, such as ceramics and paper toll, which she enjoyed giving as gifts to her family who cherished them. Helen was a dedicated volunteer at the Sudbury Algoma Hospital for many years. MERKLINGER, Kenneth John Peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Son of the late John Merklinger and Margaret Allemang of Elmira, Ontario; beloved husband of Lolan (nee Wang), they were happily married for more than eighteen years. Ken was very attached to his two daughters (mother: E. Merklinger), Catherine (Ludovic Andrivon) and their two children, Mathias and Cecilia; and Alexandra (Kevin Aubin), and their two children, Laura and Thomas. He enjoyed the company of all four grandchildren often at the cottage messing about in boats especially with Mathias. Born in Kitchener, graduated from K-W Collegiate and the University of Toronto, Ken was awarded the British government's Athlone Fellowship, which meant a 5-year stay in England, including four at Cambridge where he earned a Ph.D in cybernetics. After presenting the results of his research to an international conference and not fully satisfied with the prospect of a purely scientific career, he returned to Canada and joined the Canadian foreign service serving over the years in Cairo, New Dehli, Washington and Rome. In the second year of the Trudeau government, he was asked to help establish a new policy planning unit to assist with a review of Canadian foreign policy "from first principles". A separate request came from the Prime Minister sought a paper on "The role of the Diplomat". Both the paper and Foreign Policy for Canadians were delivered in 1970. The paper stressed the profound changes taking place in international relations, the broadened representation at Canadian missions abroad and the need for firm policy direction from the department in Ottawa -- themes confirmed by subsequent experiences. In a later assignment, Ken was responsible as editor for a 20-year update of the departmental Security Manual issued in 1995 and still in use today. It was altogether a rewarding career built on elements of adventure, discovery and service. In retirement he was an active member of the Board of the Canadian International Council's National Capital Branch (formerly CIIA) and in this capacity organized a ground breaking conference on China in 2005 entitled China Rising: Will China Join the World or Change It? He kept in close touch with the Gang of '63. Throughout his working life he was a member of St. Luke Ev. Lutheran Church in Ottawa. He is a member of the Commission on Adjudication of Lutheran Church Canada. Our deep appreciation and thanks to the doctors and senior nursing staff of the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, hemaetology (Dr. C. Faught) and respirology departments, who provided a great deal of professional support and loving care for Ken. WEBSTER, Leonard Alfred - It is with a truly broken heart and profound feeling of loneliness that Carol announces the passing of her husband Len, in the early morning hours of the 4th of February, 2009. He was born & raised in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Len always greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake. He genuinely cared for his fellow man. He was always ready to help anyone who needed him, even if it was his last dollar in his pocket. Leonard lived an adventurous life and worked in many different countries around the world. He had many opportunities to learn and pass on his knowledge to the young diamond drillers and other people in his life. Leonard was a hard working man and a dedicated person to his family, friends and employers, especially Bob and Ev Kasner and Heath and Sherwood Drilling. No doubt, Appleton Estates and Horse Tracks will feel his loss of the support. Joseph Joffre Malenfant - Joseph Joffre Malenfant s'est éteint paisiblement, entouré de sa famille, à l'âge de 92 ans, le mercredi 4 février, à l'Hôpital régional Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont. Il était l'époux de Rita (Bourque) Malenfant durant 68 ans, Il était fils de feu Ferdinand et feu Annie (Downing) Malenfant Outre son épouse, Rita, qui habite le Manoir Notre-Dame à Moncton, il laisse dans le deuil ses huit enfants: Louis (Claudette), Jeanine (Gérald) d'Ottawa, Bernard (Claire) de Montréal, Camille (Sharon) d'Aboujagane, Guy (Margot) de Dieppe, Robert (Sophie), Carmelle et Monique de Moncton. Il manquera aussi à ses 19 petits-enfants. Michel, Nadine, Marc, Christian, Pierre, Guylaine, Gabriel, Anick, Joffre, Parise, Rita-Anne, Samuel, Sophie, Julie, Éric, Claude, Julien, Mathilde et Adel et à ses neuf arrière-petits-enfants. Il laisse aussi dans le deuil ses soeurs: Genéva, Jeanette (Clément Roy) et Anna (Neil Michaud), ainsi qu'à ses frères William «Bill» et Paul. Une fille, Marie; ses frères: Ferdinand, Georges, John, Edgar, Louis, Gérald et Charles-Édouard, ainsi que deux arrière-petites-filles, l'ont précédé dans la tombe Joseph a participé aux efforts de la Seconde Guerre mondiale comme surintendant de la Clark Rouse company, un constructeur d'avions de guerre au début des années 1940. Après la guerre, il est devenu un entrepreneur et un représentant des ventes respecté. En 1961, il a été nommé par le premier ministre, Louis J. Robichaud, inspecteur en chef de la nouvelle Commission de contrôle de la Société des alcools du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il était un membre actif de la United Commercial Travelers Association, de l'Association chasse et pêche des Maritimes, ainsi que du Club de Curling Beauséjour. Joseph a été le président fondateur de l'Association des pompiers de Dieppe. Il était un ténor talentueux, membre de plusieurs chorales, dont le club musical de Dieppe, la chorale Sainte-Thérèse, la chorale l'Assomption, les chanteurs du Mascaret et la chorale Neil-Michaud. Il était aussi membre de la fanfare Assomption, fondée par son père. Il a été soliste dans des festivals et au mariage de chacun de ses enfants, ainsi qu'au mariage de l'une de ses petites-filles, le dernier étant à l'âge de 89 ans. Catholique dévoué, Joseph était membre à vie au niveau 4e degré des Chevaliers de Colomb. Il adorait la pêche au saumon et le jardinage, mais il aimait avant tout consacrer du temps à sa famille. Il était un mari et un père dévoué. Il était fier du succès de chacun des membres de sa famille immédiate et élargie incluant les Bourque, les Chiasson et les Gould qui l'appelaient affectueusement «Mon oncle Jos». Comme son épouse Rita, il voyait la vie de manière positive et avait toujours un mot d'encouragement. Il a su transmettre aux siens des valeurs chrétiennes telles que l'honnêteté, l'entraide et l'amour envers la famille et les amis. Il laisse un grand vide et son souvenir restera à jamais gravé dans le coeur de ceux qui l'aiment. Il a été une grande source d'inspiration et encourageait ses proches à être fiers et croire en eux. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée au salon funéraire Frenette, 88, rue Church à Moncton (858-1900, www.salonfrenette.com). May will be sadly missed by her children, Jack (Cheryl) of Carbon, David (Joyce), Doug, Phyllis (Lee) Baldwin, Sylvia (John) Coffin, and Glen, all of Calgary; twelve grandchildren, Kurtis (Cindy), Jill (Cole), and Russell (Maria), Stacey (Cory), Shawna and Susanne; Matthew and Pamela (Pat); Robin (Darrell), Bradley, Terri-Lynn, and Michael; and seven great-grandchildren, Alannah, Emma and Erin, Bradley, Hailey and Luka, and Emma. Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1988, as well as her parents and brother and sister. A family Graveside Service to follow at a later date.
