LAPIERRE, Shirley M. - Suddenly at her home, Carefor Pembroke, on Thursday, evening January 8, 2009 in her 72nd year. Shirley Lapierre of Pembroke, daughter of the late Oscar and Louise (nee Chalut) Lapierre. Loved sister of Vivian Lusignan ( late Gene) Pembroke, Bernice Sheldrick (late Boyd), Ottawa, Jeaninne Beausejour (Leo), Quebec City and predeceased by her sister Adorina Clear (late David) and brothers Oscar and Dennis Lapierre. Shirley will be sadly missed by all her nieces and nephews. CLARK, Ethel Mae Clark 1916-2009 - It is with great sadness that the family of Ethel Mae Clark announces her passing at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Sunday January 4, 2009 at the age of 92. Born August 2, 1916 in Chelmsford N.B., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Clark and Clara Adeline(Sturgeon) Clark. Ethel graduated from Harkins High School in 1935. During the Second World War she enlisted in the RCAF where she received the rank of Sergeant. Being the first female in the Armed Forces to successfully parachute from a plane crash entitled her to become a member of the renowned Caterpillar Club. Following the War, Ethel graduated from the University of Toronto in 1949 and later went on to receive her Masters in Occupational Therapy. Having resided in Kingston Ontario all her adult life, Ethel worked at the Ontario Psychiatric Hospital, where she became Director of the Occupational Therapy Department until her retirement in 1977. She also lectured at Queens University in Kingston. Ethel's many interests including her love for travel, golf, reading, sewing , researching and writing her family history, and most importantly spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the United Church of Canada, The New Brunswick Genealogical Society Inc. and Past Member of the Ontario Occupational Therapists and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. Ethel will be sadly missed by her sister Eleanor Donald(late Archie) of Blackville, nine nieces, eight nephews and her many close friends. Besides her parents she is predeceased by 4 sisters, Clara Gillespie, Doris Carr, Mildred Clark, and Barbara Hubbard and 2 bothers Arnold and Lyman. A service of Celebration and Remembrance for the life of Ethel Clark was held Tuesday, January 6. 2009 at St. Andrew's United Church, Blackville,N.B. with Penny Postlethwaite presiding. Organist Roma Gallon and Choir provided musical selections Here I Am Lord, Morning Has Broken and Amazing Grace. Soloist Roy MacRae sang He Touched Me. Scripture reading were provided by Betty Lou Matchett, niece and Judy Morrison, friend. Active pallbearers were Thomas Clark, Ian Donald, Royden Donald, Gerald Gillespie, James Gillespie and Jimmy Muck. Internment will take place in St. Andrew's Cemetery in the spring. In Ethel's memory donations can be made to the St. Andrew's Building Fund or memorial of choice would be appreciated. McCONNELL, Bob April 20, 1954 - January 7, 2009 Bob McConnell passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 after a brief illness at the age of 54 years. He leaves behind his son Graeme, Graeme's mother Wendy Campbell and his spirited dog Sinatra. Bob will be remembered for his sense of humour, his jovial disposition, and his intense love of life. OINONEN, Oiva 2009-01-10 With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of a wonderful husband, Dad, Grandfather and Great Grandfather Oiva Oswald Oinonen, born in Pearson Township, February 3, 1925. He passed away peacefully at St. Joseph‚s Care Group on January 8, 2009, as gallantly as he had lived. Oiva was a proud veteran of the Second World War at which time he was overseas on active duty in Germany and Holland. He was a recent recipient of the Holland Medal given in 2003 to the army vets of WWII who were involved with the liberation of Holland. After the war he worked for Abitibi as a truck driver for over 25 years. Oiva was an avid hunter and fisherman who thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, camping and then going to all the different lakes in their motor home. He was a great family man who enjoyed all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was always very proud of them all. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Mabel (Tenkula), daughters: Millie (Graham) Smith, Bernice (Roy) Maenpaa, and son Leonard (Brenda) Oinonen. Grandchildren: Lorrilee (John) Rinne, Terri (Bob) Markewich, Jennifer (David) Garrick, Jason (Nuella) Oinonen, Lee (Meghan) Maenpaa, Mark (Kari) Maenpaa. Great grandchildren: Shane, Brett and Chase Rinne, Mya and Macy Markewich, Jeremy, Kianna and Madison Oinonen, Nathan and Ella Garrick, Mitchel and Jessica Maenpaa, and Nolon and Ashlin Maenpaa. Oiva is also survived by his sister Mabel (Fred) Hagberg, sisters-in-law Lila, Thelma and Irja and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Aino and Antti Oinonen, brothers Arnold, Weikko, Ted, Edwin and sister Toini Kivi, and mother and father-in-law Jenny and Adolph Tenkula. Funeral Services for the late Mr. Oiva Oinonen will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Calvary Lutheran Church celebrated by Pastor John Schmidt. KEAYS, Frank (Francis) Harold. After a short but brave battle with cancer, Frank Keays passed away on January 8, 2009. OBITUARY EDWARD (DUSTY) MILLER 1928 - 2009 After a long battle with heart disease, Dusty passed away quietly in Lakeshore General Hospital on January 5, 2009. Beloved husband and father, he will be sorely missed by his wife of sixty years, Thelma and his daughter Sharon Deringer (Jim). Dusty was a long time and loyal employee of Air Canada starting in Winnipeg in 1948, moving to Vancouver in 1952 and finally to Montreal in 1970. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and gardener and his skills were much appreciated by the horticulturalists at MacDonald College and by his golfing buddies at Como Golf Course. Dusty is also survived by his four sisters and three brothers to whom he was affectionately known as Sonny. As well, he leaves two grandchildren, Heather Sands (Craig) and Keith Deringer and three great-grandchildren, Julia, Morgan and Mason Sands. NIELSEN, Debbie Anne October 26, 1953 - January 2, 2009 It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our dearest sister Debbie. Debbie is survived by her brother Don; sisters Karen (Doug), Lorraine (Wayne), Shirley (Ken); nephews Michael and Christian; nieces Carla (Will), Kirsten (Arthur), Maiko (Chris), Tiffany and grandniece and namesake Mikayla Debbie Rose and best friend Gail (John) Williams. Debbie was a big part of the upbringing of her nieces and nephews and was very proud of them. She continues to be an inspiration to them all. Debbie was an animal lover and was very knowledgeable on the care of animals. She met many challenges in life with incredible strength, courage and endurance, her family are grateful that she has remained a large part of their lives. "Debbie will always be in our hearts." O'GRADY, Jean Ethel (nee Brandt) June 26, 1926 - December 25, 2008 Jean Ethel O'Grady (nee Brandt) passed away in Calgary on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the age of 82 years. She is survived by her brothers, Fred of Brandon, MB and Bill (Diane) of Kamloops, BC as well as her nieces and nephews, Lila (Ron) Paddock, Darlene Brackenreed (Grant Miller), Leslie (Leanne) Brackenreed, Lois (Ralph) Curle, Darryl (Dodie) Brandt, Sylvia Brandt, and Tyson (Lulu) Brandt and close friends Charlotte Raaymakers, Shirley Busch and Bill Andersen. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Ethel Brandt, sisters, Josephine (Earl) Brackenreed, Betty Brandt, brother James and nephew Foster Brackenreed. SMITH, Clifford E. The family is saddened to announce the passing of Clifford E. Smith, who passed away peacefully in Nanaimo on January 7, 2009. Predeceased by his daughter Patricia Pettigrew. Survived by his wife Margaret, children E.J. "Ted" (Eleanor), Rose (John), Sean (Vicki), Sharon (Connie), grandchildren Ray (Grace), Colleen (Paul), Robbie and five great-grandchildren. Born and raised in rural Saskatchewan, he enlisted in the Navy where he served in the Battle of the Atlantic aboard LCI 276, including the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He then moved to Calgary where he met and married Margaret. He worked for forty-four years in the construction industry including twenty years as a premises officer with CIBC. He retired to Vancouver Island in 1991 where he was a member of the CIBC Mid-Island Luncheon Club. Cliff enjoyed working in his garden and on carpentry projects. A Celebration of life will be held Monday, January 12, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at SANDS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo, BC, with Interment to follow at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Barrett Douglas Halderman October 25, 1943 - January 2, 2009 Barrett Douglas Halderman October 25th, 1943 - January 2nd, 2009 It is with sadness, but relief that Barrett’s long fight with cancer came to a peaceful end on Friday, January 2nd, 2009. He leaves to remember all the good times his wife Betty (of 31 years), his daughter and son-in-law Amy and Cory Wirachowsky and his son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Amanda Halderman and the sparkle in Grandpa’s eye Benjamin Wirachowsky. Barrett is also survived by his mother-in-law Jean Tiffin, Aunt Orlean Boughton of Three Rivers, Michigan, Uncle Glenn Halderman of Brooks, Alberta, and Aunt Barb Buttrey of Edmonton; his sisters-in-law Janet (Klaus) Klingspor of Sherwood Park, AB, Linda (Wayne) Priest of Saskatoon, SK, brothers-in-law Don (Julie) Tiffin of Peace River, AB and Dale (Celia) Tiffin of Comox, BC and numerous nieces and nephews as well as many close cousins he treasured. Barrett was predeceased by his sister Diane Friggstad in 1975, his father Frank Halderman in 1979, his father-in-law Harvey Tiffin in 1984 and his mother Anne Halderman in 2004. Barrett’s life was filled with passion and commitment in all roads travelled. He grew up in Shaunavon, SK with a deep love of small town and farm life spending as much time as possible on the Halderman farm near Frontier, SK offering fond memories of summers spent “down on the farm”. He attended the University of Saskatchewan for his Bachelor of Arts degree and obtained his law degree at Dalhousie University. He was an instructor with the Co-op College from 1966-67, was Woodrow Lloyd’s assistant from 1967-68, was an assistant to T. C. Douglas from 1971-72 and was the legal secretary for the Crown Corporations from 1973 to 1976. Legal Aide captured his attention from 1976 to 1978 in both Weyburn and Saskatoon following which he and Betty moved to Humboldt, SK where he practiced law for 20 years with Holt, Munkler and Halderman. While in Humboldt Barrett and Betty had two children, Amy in 1979 and Jeffrey in 1981. He was a true family man, never thinking twice about coaching a variety of sports or helping with their music practice and school work. Barrett instilled a strong sense of values in his children by the way he lived his life. His appointment to the Provincial Court necessitated a move to Melfort in March of 1999 where he served as Provincial Court Judge for 8 years. Barrett’s passions were many including politics, world affairs, travel, baseball and a love of music. East Trout Lake had a draw like no other where he spent endless days soaking up the wonders of the wilderness, fishing and berry picking. Annual canoe trips with friends in Northern Saskatchewan were a highlight of each year. Barrett had an insatiable appetite for reading and spent many enjoyable hours engrossed in his readings. He was involved with many different organizations including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Humboldt Town Council, George Bailey Centre, President of the North Central Bar Association, Amnesty International, SAMA, and the East Trout Lake Executive. A Memorial Service for Barrett will be held Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at Hillcrest Funeral Home (East on 8th Street, turn right before rail crossing) at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Barrett’s honour may be made to Amnesty International (312 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa, ON K1N 1H9), or Canadian Civil Liberties Association (506 – 360 Bloor Street West, Toronto, ON M5S 1X1) or the Salvation Army (339 Avenue C South, Saskatoon, SK S7M 1N5). OSTRAND,Dale 2009-01-10 Mr. Dale Ostrand age 67 years passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with cancer, with family and friends by his side. Dale was born on December 1, 1941 in New Westminster, B.C. He resided in Haney (Maple Ridge) B.C. until 1963 when he moved to Port Arthur. Dale was employed by the Lakehead Board of Education as an electrician for eleven years. He then began working at Northern Wood Preservers for thirty years, retiring in 2006. Dale was a kind and loving husband, an avid hunter and fisherman and spent a lot of time inventing and making things in his backyard. He was a member of the Phoenix Pistol Club and the OFAH. Dale will be sadly missed by his wife Sharon (nee Bonenfant), brother-in-law Maurice Bonenfant, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives in B.C. and in Southern Ontario. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Hilda Ostrand and a brother in infancy. GRENON, Rolland - The family announces with sorrow, his death in Orleans, Ontario on Monday January 5, 2009 at the age of 99. Son of the late Eugene Grenon and Diana Grenon (nee Valin). Loving father of Guy, Louise, David (wife Betty) and Joseph. Predeceased by his loving spouse, Olive Grenon (nee Fisher). Dear brother of Fleur-Ange Lemieux of Orleans. Predeceased by his brothers (Rev. Gaston OMI, Joseph, Ivan) and sisters (Giselle, Carmen, Margot). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Derek (Caroline), Steven (Angela), Barry (Amber), Joel (Dave), Mark (Ivonne), Paula and Elizabeth and great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jeremy, Matthew, Rebecca, Leah and Adam. Rolland, a native of Sudbury Ontario, operated a grocery store for most of his working life and later worked for several years at the General Hospital and Laurentian University. Dad lived a long life with charity, hard work, responsibility and joie de vivre. He was an avid card player that included bridge, cribbage and poker - he really really hated to lose at any of them. He made sure that we never wanted for anything while we were growing up, always had a smile and looked forward to seeing us, our mates, our children and our childrens' children. We love you and will miss you deeply!
