DOXEY, Isabel (nee Bullis, prev. Murphy) Born Sept. 22, 1934 in Ottawa, died Dec. 24, 2008 in Ottawa after spending the day surrounded by family. During her first marriage, Isabel taught with the Ottawa Board of Education. In the late 1960's she moved with her daughter to Toronto. After completing her MEd Isabel married George Doxey in Barbados. While raising two more children (and making all their clothes) Isabel finished her PhD at OISE. She then became an ECE professor at Ryerson University. In this role, Isabel was a tireless advocate for accessible childcare in Canada. She delivered conference presentations throughout the world, but most loved her work in the Caribbean. In Muskoka, she was a long-time East Parry Sound School Board trustee and later ran for provincial office. With retirement she became a Master Gardener, volunteered overseas, and with the Muskoka Federation of University Women and Muskoka Literacy Council. Her journey was cut short by Frontal Temporal Dementia. In 2005, she returned to Ottawa to live at Royal Ottawa Place. There she was cared for by the most loving staff a family could ask for. She is survived by her sister Neila Arbuckle (Don); nephews Steve (Holly) and Jeff (Michelle); children Janice Karingten (Steve), Lea Doxey-Allin (Rob), Michael Doxey (Amy); grandchildren Kevan, Kolaye, Emily and Lauren and great-granddaughter Asia. As per her wishes there will be no funeral. Please make donations to the United Way or Free the Children. EDMONDS (Kelly), Ella May Peacefully on December 23, 2008 at the age of 95 at the Garry Armstrong Centre in Ottawa. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Lorne Patrick, loving sons Danny and Barry, and grandson Colin. Survived by her cherished children Terry, Bonnie (Wallace) and Jim (Bridget). Also survived by her grandchildren, Robert (Cathy), Christina, Donna (Richard), Linda (Michel), Lorne (Margaret), Trevor (Sarah), Kerri, Kelly (Zintis), Andrea (Ross), Jennifer (Michael) and Matthew (Katrina) and great grandchildren Matthew Robert (Leah), Marie-Eve, James, Emily, Noah, Toren, Dalya, Melody, Ella, Kurtis, Helena, William, Kaitlin and Dylan. FITZPATRICK, Margaret "Our Family's Strength" Margaret died Christmas morning at the age of 79. Daughter of the late James Fitzpatrick and the late Catherine Pruner of Cumberland. Cherished sister of the late Kathleen, the late Evelyn (the late Tony Rochon), Hilda, Earle, the late Burte (Mary), Lillian (the late Bill Thatcher), Bertha (the late Ed Fogarty), Maurice (the late Joyce), Ken (Kathy), Dorothy (Al Ross), Doris, Pat (Lem Combs) and the late Norman. Very special friend of Pauline Kimber. Missed by many nieces and nephews, especially Sue Doran and Brian Thatcher, and special friends where she resided. McFADDEN, Stanley Harold (Bob) 1922-2008 Passed away peacefully December 17, 2008 at the age of 86. Loving husband of Mary Patricia (Nobbs), London, Ontario for 57 years. Extraordinary father of Robert, Deborah, Sandra, and sons in law Michael Arnett, and Ulrich Blazejewski. Cherished by his grandchildren Christopher, Kate, and Tegan. Bob had a long career in the RCAF as a pilot and later at Headquarters in Ottawa. After retirement Bob worked as a consultant for the Armed Forces. Bob served as a Lancaster bomber pilot during WWII and served time as a POW in Germany. He will be missed by all. The family will be celebrating his wonderful life on January 17, 2009. OBITUARY EVA BRINDA Born: Ewa Lypen. Died peacefully in her sleep on December 21, 2008, after a very challenging nine months. Born in the mountainous farmlands Poland on September 26, 1920, at the young age of 13 she voyaged by horse cart and train to Paris with a small bag of clothes, and then crossed the rough Atlantic Ocean, to meet her father and to start her adult life in Montreal. She was joined later by the rest of her family. Eva married in 1940. Devoted mother of: Peter (Roberta, Vancouver), Michael (Sylvie Laval); loving "Baba" to: Kayla, Ingrid (Alan, Vancouver), Natalie (Martin, Florida), Manuelle (Martin); great-grandmother to her dear: Matthew (12), Kiriam (6 months), and Heidi (3 weeks). Sister / -in-law of Andrew Lypen, Anthony Woroshilo. Predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Michael; and siblings: Peter, Anna (Steve), Mary. Eva's smile, dancing and laughter could always light up a gathering. She will be missed by many, happy that she was a part of their lives, particularly her niece and talking partner, Olga Likoray. FOX, Douglas Neil. Peacefully at The Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, on Friday, December 19, 2008 at the age of sixty-two. Doug leaves behind his loving companion Delores Gilchrist of eighteen years. Sadly missed by his children, Bryan (Jennifer), Michael (Amy) and Victoria "Tori". Proud grandfather of Katelyn, Taylor and Kennedy. Doug will be fondly remembered by Matthew Gilchrist (Lillian) and their children Joshua, Jennifer and Jessica Gilchrist and Tiffany Atkins, nee Gilchrist (Jason) and their children Blake and Abbey Atkins. He is survived by his sister Margaret Hughes (Richard) and brother-in-law Guy Meiklejohn (Anmei). Doug was born in Montreal where he graduated from Bishop's College School in Sherbrooke, Quebec. In his earlier years he coached for the Burlington House League and the Burlington Rep Team, and was a past member of the Hamilton Hunt Club where he became Master of Beagles. Doug retired as a product manager from Daemar Inc. after thirty-five years. Cremation. BURRIDGE, Cecil Albert 1915 - 2008 Cecil Burridge passed away in Calgary, AB on December 21, 2008 at the age of 93 years. He was born on January 28, 1915 in Melfort, SK. Cecil was predeceased by his wife Christina on September 4, 1984. He is survived by his two sons Raymond and Ronald of Calgary; one daughter Deloris Kirkwood of Edmonton; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews and their families. Cecil had worked at Air Craft Repair in Edmonton during the war in Calgary at J.I. Case Company, Fuller Brush salesman and twenty-two years at the City of Calgary Transit Unit 583 until his retirement in 1977. GELFAND, Samuel Lyon (Leonard) October 5, 1924 - December 24, 2008 Len Gelfand, of Calgary, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 24, 2008. Len was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and spent his early years there. He moved out West with his family and spent time in the Armed Forces on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver. In the early 1950's he moved back to Calgary, where he lived the rest of his life. He worked with his late brother, Barney, at the Stampeder Hotel and Barney's Kentucky Fried Chicken until 1972 where he pursued his love of books and bought the Hillhurst Bookstore, which he owned and ran until its closure. Len was an intelligent, soft-spoken, private man. He had a passion for literature and read extensively. He also had a love of sports including soccer, baseball and football. Len was predeceased by his parents, Tevya and Rose Gelfand; his brothers, Barney, Irwin (Spike), and Sydney; as well as his two sisters, Sally and Mary. He is survived by his loving brother Saul, and sisters-in-law, Ethel of Vancouver and Ruth of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Karen (Morley), Elliot (Dena), Lewis (Stella), Joel (Stephanie), Gary (Jamie), Tom (Shelly), Michelle (Ian), Barbara (John) and Trevor, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank all those who were so kind towards Len, including Dr. Alain Tremblay, Dr. Julia Perry and all the wonderful, compassionate nurses and caregivers at the Chinook Hospice. KRAMER, Jean Frances July 31, 1939 - December 23, 2008 Jean Frances Kramer, a life-long resident of Calgary, succumbed to her ailments on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at the Dr. Vernon Fanning Center. She was born on July 31, 1939 in Carmangay, Alberta and after completing her schooling at St. Mary's Girls School in Calgary, she completed her studies in nursing care. She worked in health care for many years, particularly enjoying the time she spent at Carter Place, providing care to the residents there. In addition to her family, her great loves were her associations with St. Francis Parish Church in downtown Calgary and her relationship with Sisters of Loretto, a religious community founded in the United States. She volunteered for many years at St. Francis Church, providing pastoral care and bringing communion to senior citizens and helping them secure help for their various needs. She became a co-member of the Loretto Community in 1977 and as a member of Loretto, helped to extend their mission through her own work with the poor, handicapped and elderly. Jean's life was one of simplicity - she gave food to the hungry, clothes to the poor, nourishment to strangers, visited the lonely and because of her great faith, is now enjoying the fruits of her labour. Well done, good and faithful servant! She is survived by her mother Ottilie; her twin brother, John; her sister, Dorothy; her best friend and sister-in-law Jean Kramer; as well as her nieces and nephews, Allan, Deanna, Peter, Matthew, Keith and Chelsea. She was predeceased by both her father, Frank and her brother Donald Kramer in 2007. Although born in Alsask, Saskatchewan, Margaret lived most of her life in Winnipeg where she was employed by the Manitoba Hospital Commission. After moving to Calgary in 1997, she enjoyed many happy years at Trinity Lodge where she loved knitting for the needy, organizing her stamp collection, reading to Children in the Grandparent's Program and playing tile rummy. Margaret leaves to mourn her sister, Dorothy Baird; her niece Jane Hawkins and family as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and close friends in Manitoba and Alberta. BROAD, Margaret Leona Broad - April 13, 1920-December 23, 2008 Margaret Broad of North Bay passed away peacefully at her residence on December 23, 2008. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Jack Broad and by her twin brothers, Frank Block of Sudbury and Lorne Block of New Liskeard. Margaret was the only daughter of Leo and Elsie Block and was born and raised in Chapleau, Ontario. She attended the University of Toronto and was one of the first women to graduate as a professional Optometrist. Margaret met her husband Jack Broad while attending university and they married in Toronto on June 6, 1942. In 1955, Margaret and Jack moved to North Bay where they established their lifelong home and their optometric practice together. During her career, Margaret made many train trips back to Chapleau in order to provide a much needed health service to her hometown. During her life in North Bay, Margaret was always involved in the community. She was an active member of both the North Bay Golf and Curling clubs and of the IODE. Margaret's grace and humanity earned her many friends. She will be remembered fondly by many people, especially by her loving family, daughter Barbara Burkett of Toronto, son David Broad and his wife Dale-Marie of North Saanich, BC and by her four devoted Grandchildren, Deborah and Heather Broad of North Saanich, BC, Robert Burkett of Toronto and Erica Burkett and her fiancé, Sylvain Doucet of Haileybury, Ontario. Rather than having a service at this time, a Memorial service to celebrate her remarkable life will be held in North Bay in early August, 2009. HUMPARTZIAN, David A. - October 4, 1948 - December 19, 2008 - The name David means ‘beloved son'. He was truly the beloved son of his mother, Ruby Humpartzian and his father, the late Richard Humpartzian. He was a loving father to his daughter, Melanie and his son Dave and partner, Amanda and proud grandfather of Dave's children, Tyler, Samantha, and Ashley. Dave was a treasured brother, brother-in-law and uncle of Linda Black, her husband, Campbell, and their daughters Elissa and Heather. David's vast extended family and, his companion and friend, Donna Kostecki will all remember him as a fun-loving and caring man. He will be sadly missed by all. David enjoyed his career in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served in a variety of locations such as Alert, Inuvik, and the Golan Heights, completing his career in Ottawa. After his retirement from the Forces, he joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. David had a life-long love of motorcycles, and enjoyed the rides, rallies and times he spent with all the special friends he met through the motorcycle riding clubs. He especially loved the Friday the Thirteenth rides to Port Dover. Once you became Dave's friend, you remained his friend for all time. As a result, Dave had a large number of dear and close friends. David lived his life to the fullest, but left us all far too soon. The measure of a life lived well is in the hearts of those touched by that person. David touched many hearts. We will all miss his generosity, laughter and unconditional love.
