BANCROFT, James Arthur Peacefully on December 21, 2008 at the age of 93 at the Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa. Sadly missed by his loving wife Hazel (Gunter), loving son Robert (Bonnie) and his loving grandchildren Colin, Laura and Shanna. Predeceased by his parents Rose (nee Croucher) and James Bancroft, brother George and sister Rose, all from Burnaby B.C. His kindness and generosity to help others will always be remembered by his family and friends. Flight Lieutenant James Bancroft was a member of the RCAF for 25 years from 1940 to 1966, having served at various locations in Canada and Europe. Upon leaving the military he joined Transport Canada and was instrumental in developing Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Accident Investigation teams. He was a past chairman of the Ottawa-Carleton Safety Council and later spent many years as a volunteer with the Ottawa-Carleton Police. He had a wonderful retirement life with his family and enjoyed spending winters in Barbados for over 20 years where he also devoted much of his energy and time helping to promote motor vehicle driver safety. A special thanks for the care and support provided by staff in the Gatineau wing at the Perley & Rideau Veterans' facility. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Wednesday, December 24th after 10 a.m. until time of service in the Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Memorial donations can be made to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario or the Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. BLACKBURN, Kent Kent Alexander Blackburn, formerly of Smiths Falls, passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus) on December 20, 2008 following a three and half year daily courageous fight with cancer. Beloved husband of Laura (Woodward) Blackburn of Greely. Loved father of Derek (Carole) Blackburn of Manotick and Kristin Blackburn of Burlington. Loved poppa of Layla and Jaxon Blackburn. Dear brother of Sonya (Randy) Spurway of Desbarats. Uncle of Shaylan Spurway (Doug Duff) of Ottawa, Callahan Spurway (Brittany Morin) of Desbarates and Andrea and Michael Thomson of Toronto. Son-in-law of Shirley Woodward and brother-in-law of Wendy Thomson and Patricia Woodward. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Iola Blackburn. Fondly remembered by his cousins, extended family and many good friends. FREDERICK, Dorothy Elizabeth Ironside. June 15, 1921 - December 19, 2008. Dorothy passed away peacefully at Brentwood Nursing Home in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, December 19, 2008. Dorothy was pre-deceased by her husband Jim and son Jimmy. Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law Marlene, granddaughters Sherry (Kevin) Tyson, Tracey and great-grandson Thomas Tyson. She is also survived by her brother Albert and sister-in-law Isabelle of White Rock BC and many nieces and nephews in Canada and England. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held in Montreal. FOSS, Ingval Clifford (Cliff) June 15, 1927 - December 18, 2008 Ingval Clifford (Cliff) Foss, formerly of Calgary, was suddenly taken away from this earth on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the age of 81 years. He will be missed by his family at the Ridgeview Lodge in Raymond, Alberta where he resided for the latter part of his life. He leaves behind his sons, Edward (Shelley) Foss and Bernie Foss; grandson Damian Foss; and their mother Doris Foss. Cliff was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Annie Foss; brother Raymond Foss in 1977; and sister-in-law Vera Foss in 2001. Also left to cherish in his memory is Paul Foss (brother); Bernice (Frank) Holte (sister); and Dorothy Foss (sister-in-law). Cliff also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews. His passion in life was his music, playing the trumpet throughout. Some of the bands that he played for were the Kings Own Calgary Regiment (KOCR); the 403's Airforce Band and many other Army, Navy, Airforce Bands along with other dance bands in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. SMITH, Harvey Allen June 27, 1946 - December 20, 2008 After a brief, courageous battle with cancer, Harvey Smith of Strathmore, passed away peacefully at the Strathmore Hospital on December 20, 2008 at the age of 62 years. Harvey will be remembered for his love of life, his golf games, one-liners and his sense of humor - often laughing at jokes until tears. He is survived by his loving wife Doreen (nee Sanden), his children; Christine (Cory) Brassard, Dale Smith, and Wendy (Jason) McEwing. Harvey loved his grandchildren, Dylan, Tyler, and Kaylee Brassard, Melanie and Justine McEwing. He is survived by his brothers and sisters; Carol Gilbertson, Doug (Sandy) Smith, Barb (Larry) Deeg, Edwin Smith, Brenda (John) Flowers and Evelyn Smith. Harvey is also survived by Doreen's mother, Irene Sanden and family; Margaret Sanden (Mitch), John (Allison) Sanden, Arthur (Catherine) Sanden, Judy (Bruce) Bryan, Janet (Mardy) Skibsted. Mr. Gerry Ronald KOOT August 18, 1960 - December 17, 2008 Gerry Ronald Koot passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 in his home at Balgonie, SK at the age of 48 years. Gerry was born on August 18, 1960 in Regina, SK. Among many things that Gerry accomplished, he earned his journeyman in masonry, a craft that he learned from his father at an early age. He then established his company Precision Masonry, gaining respect and admiration within the building community. In Gerry’s spare time he treasured traveling with his wife and dog Cody. He also enjoyed fixing and improving gadgets and solving problems. Gerry is survived by his wife Colleen; his three children Miranda, Ronald and Arthur Jonathan; stepdaughter Sacha (Darryl) Spanier and their children Kale and Brooke; stepson Arther; parents Ida and Con; brother Leonard (Colleen) and their sons Mike and Mark; sisters Bernice (Eric) Crompvoets and their children Cassandra, Caitlin and Breanna and Monique (Boyd) Ttennes and their children Brad and Jake; father-in-law and mother-in-law Meinrad and Kathy Kauck; brother-in-law Darwin Kauck; and his four legged friend Cody. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill; grandson Cory Hovind; mother and dad Betty and Willard Dunbar. Arlene is survived by her daughters Linda (Doug) Hovind of Regina, Diane and Joanne of Regina, son Brian (Trish) of Calgary; grandchildren Jerod (Christa) Hovind, Dylan and Luke Phillips and William Phillips; sister Leeta (Morley) Gooding of Estlin; her special cousins, nieces, nephews and her special companion Lady. Arlene was born December 15, 1934 and raised in the Estlin District. She lived most of her married life in the community. She was very involved in all community activities. She loved to sing with the group “Singing Friends and Neighbours,” which is a close knit group of sisters, cousins and friends; the family all having a special gift for music and singing together for many years in nursing homes and various community events. Mum was a totally selfless person giving of her time and love to her children and grandchildren. She was always willing to step in and help out in any way that we needed. She was a very courageous strong woman and we can’t say how much we love and admire her. The strength and spirit she had was incredible. Mom was a special gift to us and words cannot express how much she will be missed. STEWART, Elsie Jean Elsie passed away peacefully at the High River Hospital on December 16, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Beth and son-in-law Gordon, her daughter-in-law Judy, her grandsons Jason, Christopher, granddaughter Kendra and great-granddaughter Emily as well as many other cousins and friends. Elsie was predeceased by her husband of forty-nine years Douglas Barclay, her son William John (Bill) and her grandson Douglas George. Upon graduation from the Brandon Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1939, Elsie began her nursing career which lasted until her retirement in 1977. In her retirement, Elsie enjoyed traveling with Doug, gardening, cooking and baking for family and friends. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her. The family is grateful for the care Mom received during her years as a resident of The Silver Willow Lodge in Nanton. Mr. Morton A. Renfrew January 20, 1939 - December 14, 2008 RENFREW, Morton A. A.I.B. (Scot) 69, Beaver Bank. It is with deep sorrow that the family of Morton Renfrew announce his peaceful passing on December 14, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Scotland, Morton was the eldest son of Lt. Archibald Renfrew and Mrs. Emily (Sinclair) Renfrew (99 years young). At the age of 15, he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the chartered banking profession. He continued in banking until being called up for national services. He was placed in the military police RAF and stationed in Cypress. In 1960, and back in banking, he met his future wife, May Neilson. They were married in Helensburgh, Scotland, in 1962 and set up home in Balloch, Scotland. In 1965, Morton assisted in the home birth of his bouncing baby son, Douglas. Chief Overseas Branch in Glasgow was Morton's last position with the chartered bank in Scotland, as Morton, May and their baby son decided to make a new life in Canada. A decision they have never regretted. Upon arriving in Hamilton, Ont., Morton joined the Industrial Development Bank and the family became used to being transferred to various interesting posts such as Thunder Bay, Windsor, Stratford and finally to his beloved Maritimes. By this time, the family had grown with the addition of a lovely daughter, Cheryl, and another bouncing baby boy, Kenneth. Morton was a charming and well educated man, with a very well developed sense of humour. He encouraged his children to enjoy Guiding and Scouting, and with his natural ability as a woodsman, he gave many happy years as a Scout troop leader. He played a major role in his wife's involvement with scouting, especially when it came to lighting camp fires. Morton also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and walks with his dogs, Emma and Willie. Left behind to miss this wonderful man is his wife of 46 years, May Christine; daughter, Cheryl (Michael) Craig; sons, Douglas and Kenneth (Danielle); brothers, Norman (Muriel) Renfrew, Alan (Peggy) Renfrew and his adored grandchildren, Morgan, Mathew, Meghan and Tavis. Morton was especially close to Gladys and Kenneth Macintosh; sister-in-law, Patricia (Neilson) Williams, and the late Graham Williams, Alan MacAndlish, Dawson Miller (school friend, Jordon Hill College) and best pal in Beaver Bank, Danny Wallace. Cremation has taken place. A service for the celebration of Morton's life will take place in First Sackville Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 18 at 2 p.m. under the direction of Rev. Dr. George MacDonald. Reception to follow downstairs in the church hall. By special request, family flowers only. Aujourd’hui, Léonie rejoint son époux Louis, l’amour de sa vie. Elle a été précédée de ses parents Elas et Irma Gauthier, trois frères Oscar, Maurice et Roméo, sa sœur Hermance, sa belle-sœur Agnes et son mari Honoré Kirouac, ses enfants Jean et Jeanne, et son petit-fils Robert. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses huit enfants, Hélène (Robert Asselin), Albert (Suzanne Bédard), Jocelyne (Gerry Stary), Liliane (Gilbert Beaudette), Roger (Glenda Lebeau), Laurence (David Nordin), Michelle (Wayne Bilan) et André (Louise Dandeneau), vingt-trois petits-enfants et dix-neuf arrière-petits-enfants. Léonie est née à La Broquerie le 29 juin 1926. Elle était la deuxième d’une famille de dix enfants. À l’adolescence, elle a quitté l’école pour aider sa mère avec les nombreuses tâches quotidiennes. La lecture est toujours restée une passion pour elle alors, pour ainsi dire, elle a continué à s’instruire grâce à ses lectures. À l’âge de 19 ans, elle a pris pour époux Louis Granger. Ils ont commencé leur vie et ensemble, ils ont accueilli avec amour leurs huit enfants. Maman a su nous transmettre, avec amour et sagesse, tout le nécessaire pour nous rendre heureux. Nous avons de très beaux souvenirs d’elle assise dans la chaise berceuse, entourée de nous, et qui chante toutes les chansons de La Bonne Chanson. Grâce à elle, nous avons appris que la vie est belle. L’amour pour sa famille a toujours été au premier rang : on attendait toujours que Papa, qui travaillait au loin, rentre pour le souper. Nous avons apprécié toutes ses bonnes qualités, mais nous l’aimions surtout pour son oreille sympathique. Elle n’était jamais trop occupée pour nous écouter, pour nous tendre une oreille. Elle était notre confidente et elle savait toujours quel conseil donner. Maman était très douée pour la couture et l’artisanat. Elle était aussi très bonne cuisinière. De plus, elle s’engageait dans la communauté, qu’elle tenait à cœur. Maman avait à cœur de nous ouvrir à la vie en dehors de notre petit milieu. Elle nous encourageait à nous épanouir par la musique classique, le théâtre, la poésie, le chant, la déclamation et le voyage. Tout cela faisait partie de notre vie. Plus tard dans sa vie, le théâtre a été sa passion. Elle a passé plusieurs bons moments à écrire, diriger et monter plusieurs pièces à La Broquerie et à Saint-Boniface. Elle a tant aimé cela. La famille souhaite remercier les infirmières et tout le personnel à la Résidence Despins et au Foyer Valade pour les soins compatissants. Reading was always a passion for her, so one can say she continued to teach herself through reading. At 19 years of age, she married Louis Granger, and they began their life together. They raised their eight children with much love. With love and wisdom, Mom passed on to us everything we needed to be happy. We have such wonderful memories of her sitting in her rocking chair, singing songs from La Bonne Chanson, surrounded by us. We learned through her that life is beautiful. Our mother’s love for her family was first in her life: we always waited for Dad to come home for supper, when he was working far from home. We loved her for her many qualities, but mostly we loved her for her sympathetic ear. She was never too busy to listen to us, to lend us an ear. She was our confidante and she always knew what advice we needed. Mom was very talented at sewing and arts and crafts, and was a very good cook. She was also very involved in her community which meant so much to her. Mom truly wished to open us up to the wonders of the outside world. She encouraged us to blossom through classical music, theatre, poetry, singing, elocution, and travel. This was all part of our lives. In her later years, theatre became her passion. She had many good times writing, directing, and putting on plays in La Broquerie and St. Boniface. She really enjoyed that. The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff at Résidence Despins and Foyer Valade for the wonderful care given to our mother.
