POGORZELEC, Sheila - On Saturday July 26, 2008, Sheila passed away suddenly at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 72. Loving wife of the late Joseph (2006) for 49 years. Dear mother of Mark (Sharon), John (Kathleen) and Steven. Grandmother of Nina, Dion and Leanne. Sheila will be sadly missed by her sister-in- law Jean (John) Matlock, California, dear family friend Denis as well as many nieces and nephews and “Snoopy“. WHELTON, THELMA BERNICE - The death of Thelma Bernice Whelton, loving wife of Joseph Whelton occurred on Friday July 25, 2008 unexpectedly at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in 1934 in Pearsonville, NB she was the daughter of the late Murray John and Florence (Smith) Pearson. Thelma retired in 1995 following a 40 year career at NB Tel. She continued working at Heritage Memorials as a Sales Manager until 2007. Thelma was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and an active member of Stella Maris Church. Thelma was a fun loving person who loved to follow sports. Her favorite hockey team was the Toronto Maple Leafs who she watched on television every Saturday night. She was a dedicated fan and cheerleader for her family and their teammates at sporting events for more than forty years. She was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed playing card games of all kinds. Thelma enjoyed spending time with friends and family at the cottage on the Belleisle Bay. Thelma's love of life and wonderful sense of humor brought joy to everyone who knew her. She will always be remembered for her unconditional love for her family. TURCOTTE, Al J. - In loving memory of Al J. Turcotte, 74 years, who passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, July 27th, 2008 at his home with his loving wife by his side. Beloved husband of Lois (Harrison) Turcotte for 47 years. Cherished and loving father of Brian Turcotte, wife Jackie, granddaughter Hannah of London and Kevin Turcotte, wife Cindy, grandsons Kiefer and Kieran of Sudbury. Al was a District manager for Canadian Liquid Air where after retirement he traveled the provinces auditing the branches for the company. Al's love for his grandchildren was very strong and how they loved his special sayings. He leaves them with many fond memories. He played hockey in his early years both in Kirkland Lake and Toronto and went on to coaching for many years for the Sudbury Minor Hockey League. Curling, golfing, and building model planes were hobbies he enjoyed the most. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a long time member of Christ the King Church. Al's generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family and leaves a rich legacy of integrity and bravery. NORDMAN, Laila Orvokki (nee Hill) (Tammi) - In loving memory of Laila Orvokki (nee Hill) (Tammi) Nordman, 83 years, who passed away Sunday morning, July 27th, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Center. Born in Sudbury, she worked for many years as a skilled seamstress. Laila was a well respected leader of the Finnish Community, both with her love of music and dedication to the culture. She was a longtime director of the Savel Choir, starting in 1971 and a member of the Finnish Senior Citizens Choir. An industrious woman, she enjoyed crafts, especially her crocheting. Laila was a strong pillar of support for the Wanup Hall. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing cards and blueberry picking. Laila had a real affinity for animals including racoons, foxes, dogs and cats. She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. Beloved wife of Eugene Tammi predeceased 1965 and Leo Nordman predeceased 2001. Loving mother of Judy Parker of Sudbury, Pauline Wilson and Wendy Pergeutile (husband David) both of Calgary, and stepson Howard Nordman (wife Dorothy) of Alberta. INGLIS, Reta Evelyn (nee Doel) June 1, 1924 - July 27, 2008 Reta Inglis went to be with her Lord and Saviour, from the Bow View Manor, her home for the last ten years on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Born June 1, 1924 in Gwynne, AB, Reta came to Calgary at the age of sixteen to attend Garbutts Business College and has lived here ever since. She worked at the BA Oil Refinery and then spent many years with the Calgary Catholic School Board. Reta was a charter member of both the Calgary Winter Club and the Country Hills Golf Club. She, along with her husband Bus, loved golf, curling and fun times with friends and family. "Nana" was always proud of her children and grandchildren and welcomed them and all their friends to her home with warmth and charity. She was a fine seamstress, sewing everything from pyjamas to outerwear to formal dresses for all her family. Reta is lovingly remembered by her children, Brian (Kathleen) Inglis, Bonnie Inglis, Bruce (Nancy) Inglis and Cathy (Murray) Sondergard and cherished by her eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also mourning her loss are her brothers, Harold (Gladys) and Robert (Germaine); brothers-in-law, Lenin Linden and Phil Miquelon; and sister-in-law, Joan (Bill) Braybrook. JONATHAN, Miles (Neil) July 29, 1963 - July 24, 2008 With great sadness, on July 24, 2008, Miles passed away peacefully. He is survived by his mother Faye, sister Kelly and brother Mark. Miles was predeceased by his father Neil in 2007. Miles' life will be remembered with a celebration of his life that will be announced at a later date. CLARK, Elvin (Al) 1936 - 2008 Elvin passed away in Calgary on July 25, 2008 at the age of 71 after a year long battle with cancer. He was born near Ormiston, Saskatchewan to Marshal Clark and Gertrude (Hicke). Elvin will be lovingly and sadly missed by his very close family: his wife, Mona, children Bill (Charlene) Clark, Reg (Pam) Clark, Michelle (Gary) Winters, Bud (Anthony) Clark, Laura (Paul) Vanderstoop and grandchildren Daryl, Christopher, Taryn, Brady Clark, Maxine, Ashley, Michael Winters, Ryan, Chelsie, Sam and Josh Vanderstoop, also by his sister Dona (Jim) Laird, half-siblings Ivan (Valerie), Brian (Dayma), Pat, brothers-in-law Bill (Thelma) Johnson and Fred (Pam) Johnson and sisters-in-law Maida (Barry) Fysh, Esther (Sid) Johnson, Anita Clark and many nieces and nephews, as well as his two loving aunts, Eva Gross and Hanna Fletcher, two uncles, Harold Clark and Keith (Susan) Clark. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Albert. Elvin was raised in Saskatchewan and moved to Calgary in 1956. He worked for Trotter & Morton Mechanical Contractors from 1956 until he retired. His main love was his family. Any excuse was enough to bring the whole family home. He lived many of his years in the community of Conrich where he enjoyed raising animals of all types, especially his horses. He moved with his family to Indus in 1981 and then back into Calgary in 1990. He enjoyed the yearly camping trips in B.C. with all of the family plus many good friends. He and his wife, Mona, curled with the Town & Country Curling Club for many years where they made good friends for life, also they spent time being 'snowbirds' in Arizona. In lieu of flowers, if desired a memorial donation in Elvin's name may be made directly to The Tom Baker Cancer Centre at the Foothills Hospital. WILLIAMS, Judith Lea Judith Lea Williams, beloved wife of Dennis Williams, of Lethbridge passed away at home on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the age of 61 years. Besides her loving husband, she is survived by her children: David (Sheri), Denise, Mark and Orin Williams; two grandchildren Brynn and Braith; her mother Joan Jessop; and aunt and friend Violet Addison. She was predeceased by Bill Taylor (father) and by George Jessop. Judith Lea Williams was born and raised in Calgary. It was there that she met her husband Dennis and they raised four children. Judy could not wait to have grandchildren. She looked forward to her turn to say yes to everything and spoil them. Judy accomplished this in "Spades". She was an amazing grandmother, second only to her outstanding job as a mother. Judy was surrounded by her husband and children at the time of her death and will be missed by everyone. KANE, Hugh "Hughie" Gall Wilson November 3, 1924 - July 27, 2008 Hugh "Hughie" Gall Wilson Kane passed away at the age of 83 years, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's at Carewest Signal Point on Sunday, July 27, 2008. Hughie was born in Red Deer, AB to John and Grace Kane. He moved to Calgary as a young boy and resided there for most of his life. Hughie joined the Navy and served on a mine sweeper off Vancouver Island during the Second World War. In 1946 he married Laura Jane Byrnes. Hughie worked for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede as a Rink Rat and played hockey with the Arena Dukes. He also worked as a cattle buyer for Parslow and Denoon at the old Calgary Stockyards. Hughie then moved his family to Phoenix, AZ where he was the managing professional at the Dundee Curling Club. The family returned to Calgary and he resumed his career as a cattle buyer. In 1980 Hughie moved to Olds where he was employed by the Olds Auction Mart and as a commissionaire at the Olds College. Hughie is survived by his only son Rick (Toby) of Red Deer, AB; his three grandchildren Chris (Jackie), Megan (Brad Shaback), and Tim (Amy Heffernan), all of Calgary. He also leaves behind three great-grandsons, Hayden Kane, Noel and Nate Shaback; as well as his sisters Molly and Doreen; and his brothers Chuck, Bill and Terry. Hughie was predeceased by his wife Laura (1971) and his siblings Jack, Jim, Grace, Ronnie and Dan. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com .
