AGELAKOS, Panagiotis (Peter). 1930-2008. Born on April 21, 1930 in Kaminia, Sparta, Greece. Our Spartan hero who courageously battled C.O.P.D. for many years, peacefully passed away on March 3, 2008. Upon his departure he was surrounded and embraced by his beloved wife Eleni "Nitsa" of 52 years, and their children Bessie (Pantelis Albanis), Elias and grandchildren Nectaria, Christos and Gabriella. He will also be sadly missed by his sister Panagiota Trakakis and her family; brother Leonidas (Giannoula) and their family; sister Mariklia and her family in Greece; sister Stavroula and her family in Greece; and sister Artemis (George Theodoropoulos) and their family. He will also be sadly missed by all his cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. BOND, Mary Rebecca - Oasis Trailer Court, Antigonish. It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved mother who passed away on March 6, 2008, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, surrounded by her family. Born in Merland, Guysborough Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Sarah (Bowman) Gavin. She was a wonderful mother, a loving grandmother and a friend to all who knew her. University for over 25 years in housekeeping and had a particular fondness for her "boys" at MacIsaac House. She enjoyed fishing and hunting, but her greatest enjoyment was her family. BROPHY, William Anthony "Bill" - 73, Clark's Harbour, passed away March 6, 2008, in Yarmouth County. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Roy Whalen and Helena Brophy. Bill was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served 15 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a proud business owner at the age of 73. Roy worked as a fisherman, a carpenter, and retired as a laborer from the Canso Fish Plant. He was a member of St. Agnes Parish, Little Dover. CROUSE, Ruby Jean - 93, went home to be with the Lord on March 7, 2008. Born in Bridgewater on January 8, 1915, she died in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since the Second World War, a member of the Bridgewater United Baptist Church most of her life, and loved the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a daughter of Ernest John and Bernice Margaret (Hubley) Strothard. Her victory in Jesus is celebrated by her children, Linburn (Grace Crouse) Crouse, Charleston; Donna (Gary) Gayton, Lantz; David (Joan Nauss) Crouse, Chester, and Anthony "Tony" (Beverly Babcock) Crouse, Dartmouth. She is survived by her sister, Effie Arenburg, Harbourview Haven, Lunenburg; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Linburn Crouse; sisters, Catherine (Vernon) Wilkie, Clarice (Stuart) Parks; grandchildren, Lisa Ann Gayton, James Linburn Crouse, and John Gregory Crouse. GILLIS, Jo Anne Christine - Lyons Brook, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away following a short illness, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on March 6, 2008. Born in Toronto, Ont., on October 30, 1956, she was the daughter of Joan (Brown) MacDougall, Abercrombie, and the late Lawrence MacDougall. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Stellarton, and the C.W.L. She was a former member of the Senior Choir. She was a graduate of St. F.X. University and a 27 year employee of Sobeys Inc. At the time of her death she was Vice President of Project Control and Methodologies for National IT. She served three terms on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Pictou County. She was also a member of the singing group Impromptu. She is survived by her husband, Alex; her daughters, Christy (Jeremy) Walker, Igloolik, NU; Maggie, at home, and her only grandson, Alexander Jeremy Walker. KEIZER, Verena Vivian - 90, Sonora, Guysborough Co., died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at home. Born in Sonora, she was a daughter of the late Asa and Edna (Burns) Jordan. She was a founding member of Calvary Faith Church, Sonora. Throughout the years, Verena served her Lord and her church as secretary, treasurer and pianist. She was also employed at Historic Sherbrooke Village for 10 years. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother, Verena loved to cook, bake, knit and quilt, and her family will forever be warmed by her generous gifts of handmade quilts sewn with the unconditional love all mothers and grandmothers possess. On January 2, 2008, Verena celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by her family and friends, and was overjoyed at the thought that she was a member of a five-generation family with the latest birth of her great great-granddaughter. She loved ATVing with her late husband and friends, and enjoyed cards games, especially Uno and Skip-Bo. Verena loved, appreciated and enjoyed the people in her church, her family and in her community. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the honour of knowing her. PHINNEY, Lloyd Percy - November 30, 1940 - March 6, 2008, Broker/Owner EXIT Realty Negotiators. It is with the saddest of hearts that the family announce Lloyd's passing at the very early age of 67, after a very brief illness but extremely courageous battle! Lloyd passed away peacefully in Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on March 6, 2008, surrounded by his family, who loved and adored him. Lloyd was born and raised in Parrsboro and moved to Toronto in 1959 where he pursued his first passion of music, which eventually led to a recording contract with RCA Records. Lloyd discovered his second passion later in life when he obtained his real estate license and experienced such an overwhelming sense of fulfillment being able to help others! Lloyd leaves behind his best friend and loving wife of 38 years, Polly; son, Greg, Burlington, Ont.; daughters, Paula Hargraves (Les), Pickering, Ont., and Colleen Foley (Neil), Burlington, Ont. SPENCER, Sidney Robert - 84, Windsor Junction, passed peacefully to his rest on March 5, 2008, in his home, with his immediate family at his side. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Watson, Bedford; brother, Cecil and his wife Alice Joyce, Windsor Junction; 12 nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by parents, John and Elsie (Crouse) Spencer, and sister, Annie Blois. He worked for CNR for 43 years, retiring as the Rockingham Station agent. Throughout his life, he was an avid world traveler and later in life he spent many winters in New Zealand and Australia. He was active as a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Philae Shriners, and in December of 2007 he received his 50 year pin. He was also a member of the Windsor Junction Historical Society and the Fall River Friendly Group - Senior Citizens. He will always be remembered for his active role in family picnics and outings. Much thanks is expressed to Dr. Brian Ashton and wonderful neighbours, Bussie Grimes and Eric Adams for their constant and reliable help and concern. WOJTASIEWICZ, Jan Tadeusz "Ted" - 93, Antigonish, formerly of Isaac's Harbour and Drum Head, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Piotrkow Trybunalski, Poland, he was the son of the late Pawel and Bronislawa (Kotwicz-Gilewska) Wojtasiewicz. He is survived by daughter, Theresa Wojtasiewicz, Ontario. He was predeceased by his second wife, the former Gladys Maude Langley, Drum Head and his first wife, Emily Downar. The youngest of seven children, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jozef, Leszek and Zbigniew, and his sisters, Lucyna, Felicja and Maria. At 16, he joined the Polish army, discharged 3 years later but returned briefly as a civilian instructor teaching senior officers hand-to-hand combat. He rejoined the army after the invasion of Poland, was captured as a Prisoner of War in 1940, escaped, was recaptured and sent to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in 1941. He was transferred briefly to Sztetin in 1942 and from there, to Mauthausen where he remained until liberated in 1945. After 2 years in a displaced persons camp in Austria, he was offered work in Canada by CN Rail. With his fiancée, Emily he took the ship Saturnalia to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then on to Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario. While working full time as a taxi driver in Toronto, he was also going to school full time to better his English and learn a trade. Sadly, after 3 months working at his new trade in Orillia, his wife died. During this time, he was reunited with his sisters, Felicja and Maria, who were both living in Toronto, through a mutual friend. Ted married Gladys in December 1965. He retired in 1979 and he and Gladys moved to Drum Head, where they ran the Sun Dial Gift Shop and Cafe (named for the Sun Dial restaurant in Orillia where he courted her). They closed the business in the mid-80s to enjoy their retirement. Gladys passed away in 1998. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service by request. A private family burial will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Seaside Cemetery, Seal Harbour. Funeral arrangements are under the dignified and compassionate care of G.W. NAYLOR, Brian A. On Monday, February 25, 2008, our much beloved and respected husband and father, Brian Alfred Naylor unexpectedly passed away with grace and dignity at his residence in Ottawa, Ontario. Brian was born in London Ontario on October 10, 1945. He is survived by his loving family: wife Brenda of Ottawa; daughter Michelle of Ottawa; sister Janet (Gordon) of Spruce Grove, Alberta; nephew Joel (Katherine) of Edmonton, Alberta; niece Jodi (Tim) of Stony Plain, Alberta; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Grace Helen (Peggy) Naylor, and his father, Carman Alfred Naylor. Brian was blessed with an enjoyable full life and especially enjoyed lots of travel with his family and expanding their horizons. He was an ardent downhill skier and had a passion for golfing, guitar playing, computers, and photography. He is loved and sorely missed by his family and many friends across Canada. PARSONS, Leah Florence - 1915-2008; Leah Parsons completed a compassionate, faithful and gracious life on Friday, March 7, 2008. Leah was the beloved and devoted wife of the late John Denny (Jack) Parsons, a loving mother to Joanne Bannister (predeceased 2003), the dear mother of Judy Lowe (Tom), Nancy Buckingham (Don), Cathy DeFrancisco (Gerry) and Mary Lou Haines (Ralph), and a special mother-in-law to Dr. Leslie Bannister (Jane). Grandma will be remembered with love by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. (Predeceased by Jeffery Buckingham and Heather Bannister.) Leah was the last of her family being predeceased by sisters Dorothy Rice, Pauline Christie (Joe), Jean Watson (Rupert), Phyllis Kent (Herb), and by brothers Ted Rice (Elaine) and Creighton Rice. She is survived by dear sister-in-law Marguerite Rice (Creighton). Leah was a charter member of St. Andrew's United Church, formerly Zion United, where she joined the U.C.W. and Friendship Group as well as being a 50 year member of the A.M. Overholt Chapter of the I.O.D.E. Leah was also a volunteer with what is now known as The Lansdowne Centre. Leah's love of family, nature, and needlework has comforted all who were blessed to know her. The family will receive friends at McCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME, 495 Park Rd. N. on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The funeral will be held in the chapel Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Farringdon Burial Ground. Rev. Don Robinson will officiate. PARKER, A. Keith. 1927 - 2008 - Peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice in Calgary on March 7, 2008 in his eighty-first year. Much loved husband of Dorothy Parker (nee Duffy), father to Jeff Parker, Janice MacIntyre, and Claudia Parker, and sister to Mary Sisson. Predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Henry Parker, brothers Ken and Bobby and sister Clare. Keith will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Janel and Jared MacIntyre, and Ben, Alec and Chloe Parker. He will also be sadly missed by his sons-in-law, Eldred MacIntyre and Peter Glass, daughter-in-law, Karen Parker and many cousins, nieces and nephews and dear friends. Keith spent his entire working life in the insurance business in Montreal. He was an avid gardener and he enjoyed many years in retirement as a flower crafter. Keith will also be remembered for his long time association with the sport of Ringuette in Quebec, for which he was recognized by the province. A private funeral and cremation will take place in Calgary and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Montreal. SWEENY, Nancy August 9, 1948 - February 27, 2008 Nancy Sweeny died February 27, 2008 in hospital in Drumheller, Alberta after a year long battle with cancer. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband of 32 years, David Sweeny, her sister-in-law, Maureen Sweeny (Malcolm Stewart), nephew Charles Thompson, and her aunt and uncle, Shirley and Bill Hart. Nancy will also be deeply missed by her family in Hong Kong. In accordance with her wishes and beliefs, Nancy's ashes will be laid to rest in a private family service. BAKER, Albert William "Bill" Passed away on March 6, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer at Queens Square Terrace in Cambridge. In his 90th year Bill left behind his beloved wife Mabel (nee Flower) of 65 years. Much loved by children Ted (Patricia ) of Burlington, Wendy (George Evans) of Port Elgin, Lee (Sherry) of Brantford, Daniel (Bev) of East Amherst N.Y. and Lynn (Steve Agnew) of Ottawa. Sadly missed by his eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and his two surviving sisters and brother. Bill served in Ferry Command during WWII which was followed by a period in Argentina establishing their national airline. Returning to Canada, he worked for A.V. Roe Canada as the chief flight engineer of the AVRO Jetliner. He later worked for Garrett Corporation, Fleet Manufacturing, and finished his career as Executive Vice President of McDonnell Douglas in Ottawa. Bill's many achievements, such as induction into Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 2000 and achieving his commercial pilot licence were chronicled in his memoirs "The Life and Times of Bill Baker" which he wrote for his family. He retired in Ottawa, moved to Tillsonburg and finally settled in Cambridge. Bill enjoyed stained glass making, wine, reading, gardening, golf and travelling the world. Special thank you to all the staff at Queens Square Terrace for all their care and kindness. A private memorial service will take place on Saturday March 8th. BRISCO, Agnes Cleghorn "Nessie" Nessie, passed away at the age of 90 on March 4, 2008 in Arborstone Nursing Home, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Raised in Maybole Scotland, Nessie came to Canada in 1941 as the young warbride of the late Howard C. Brisco. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Paul) Lametti and her son Creighton (Valerie) and grandsons Craig, Daniel, Dawson, Brendan and Trevor. A loving mother who was dedicated to her family and who in her later years derived her greatest enjoyment from following the lives and significant achievements of each of her five grandsons. The family especially wishes to express their deeply felt appreciation for the kindness, the personal care and the friendship the staff at Arborstone provided Nessie throughout her stay at the home. There will be no visitation in Halifax at the family's request. A Church Service however, will be held for Nessie in early summer in Ottawa, the city our mother and father came to regard as home and where many of their closest friends continue to reside.
