Cherished wife and best friend of Joseph for 61 years. Loving mother of David (Judy McNicol), of Brockville, Ann (Jim Buchanan), of Perth, James (Patricia Luke), of Cold Lake, Alberta, Joseph (Wendy Hoppins), of Kanata, John (Dawn Smith), of Sherwood Park, Alberta and Patrick (Ruth Somerville), of Perth. Lovingly remembered by her 13 grandchildren Jennifer (Jeremy Harness), Geoff (Caroline Kelly), Stephen, Karen, Erika, Alexis, Rebecca (Jason Haughian), Joey, Jason, Krystan, Nicholas, Katie and Patrick, and her 9 great-grandchildren. KELLY, James Edward "Eddie" - 46, Glencoe, Guysborough Co., passed away March 5, 2008, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of James and Sarah (MacEachern) Kelly. Eddie was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Community College in heavy duty engine repair. He lived in Lochaber for a number of years and worked at the Lochaber Service Station. He also worked as a truck driver, plow operator and furnace repairman. Eddie had an intuitive and inventive mind and just completed restoring his 1950 International tractor. Eddie received his 10 year medallion from AA and will be missed by his many friends there. Besides his parents, he is survived by children, Robert, Michael and Laura, all of Pleasant Valley; companion, Sue Yewchuk, Antigonish; brothers, Francis (Pearl), New Glasgow; George (Rose), Erinville; William (Karen), Moncton, N.B.; Michael, Afton; Douglas, Clarence (Alyssa), Antigonish; sisters, Donalda Kelly, Antigonish; Mary Phinney (Clinton), Fairmont; Irene Hemlow, Ontario; Clara Kelly (Wade MacPherson), North Interval; Bridget Kelly, Antigonish; Sarah Rose Kelly (Nick Pennaquin), Port Hawkesbury; numerous nieces and nephews. DIRKS, Gerald Edward - 1942-2008 - It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected death of Gerry at home in Victoria, B.C., on February 28, 2008. Gerry is survived and deeply mourned by his loving wife Pat; devoted mother, Esther; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Bill Boechler and sister-in-law, Roberta Reid. He will also be sorely missed by his nephews Jason Butcher (husband of Maureen, father of Madigan) and Matthew Butcher (husband of Jenny). Also bereaved are his goddaughters Maud Arthur and Emma Michielsen, his extended family and many friends, former students and colleagues. Gerry was predeceased by his father Edward Dirks. Gerry lived a remarkable life. In spite of losing his sight entirely at an early age, he was able, with strong family support, to graduate from the University of British Columbia and to go on to complete an M.A. at Queen's University and to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. In addition to a long and successful teaching career in the Politics department at Brock University, Gerry published extensively on the subject of Canadian immigration and refugee policy. After taking early retirement in 2002, Gerry returned with Pat to his beloved B.C., taught a few courses at the University of Victoria, made new friends and travelled extensively with Pat which he so loved to do. In addition to his professional achievements, Gerry made a significant contributions to the CNIB both as a volunteer Board member and, for a short period in 1984-1985, as Executive Director of the Ontario Division. He played a central role in the establishment of Voiceprint in Canada and worked to improve the lives of the blind in other parts of the world through his involvement in the World Blind Union and his support of the World Braille Foundation. Although he left us much too soon, Gerry died looking forward to the trips he was planning to take next and to the fine wines he was sure he would discover! We will all miss his sense of adventure, his loyalty to family and friends and his witty humour. No service by request. Celebrations of Gerry's life are being planned for Victoria in the late spring and for Ontario in the early summer. TORRANCE, Thomas A.H. (Tom) - After a valiant battle with cancer, Tom passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Thursday March 6, 2008 in his 58th year. Tom, loving husband of Tomolynn for 36 years. Dear father of Stuart and his wife Leanne. Remembered by his brothers Peter Torrance and his family and William Torrance and his family, and sister Margaret and Danny Petit and family and Theresa and George Upham and family. Tom taught for 19 years at local colleges, on the internet and through private sessions. He was the former editor of “50 and Over“ magazine and Pioneer Christian Monthly. ATKINS, Helen Mary - 94, Windsor, passed away March 7, 2008, in Windsor Elms. Born in Eganville, Ont., she was a daughter of the late William J. and Julia A. (Mullin) Holleran. Helen was a graduate of Ottawa Normal School and the University of Toronto, where she earned her B.A. and M.S.W. She taught in Ontario and Nova Scotia and practiced social work in Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia. She was a member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers. Helen retired from the Dartmouth Regional School Board in 1978. She is survived by daughter, Pamela Atkins, Dartmouth; son, Dr. Kenny (Vicki) Atkins, Tennessee. She was predeceased by sisters, Frances Brown, Dorothy Holleran, Marian (Eric) Patterson, Patricia (Mark) Howard, Rosemary Holleran, Margaret Holleran; brother, Jim (Mary) Holleran. FOUGERE, Ernest John - 83. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest John Fougere of French Cove, on March 5, 2008, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in French Cove, he was a son of the late John and Catherine Fougere. He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret (Wilfred) Bonnar and Philomen (Jamea) Calder. He is survived by hisdevoted wife of 54 years, Joan (MacPhail) Fougere; daughter, Marilyn (Lloyd) Boudreau, French Cove; son, Darrell Fougere, Toronto; grandchildren, Amy (Peter) Parrag, Toronto; Brendan (Melissa) Boudreau, Toronto, and Charlene (Adam) Pottie, Calgary. He is also survived by his brother, Charlie (Polly) Fougere, French Cove. He was a great husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing, boating, hockey, cards, and going for a drive with his dog Blue when in better health. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Il était l'époux bien-aimé de Diane Bellefeuille et le père de Christian Roy (Sarah Paquet) et de Josée Roy (Larry Daigneault). Sa présence manquera énormément à ses petits enfants adorés Noémie, Sophie-Anne et Émile Roy ainsi qu' Anouk et Louis Daigneault. Il laisse dans le deuil trois frères dont Pierre (Dolores), Paul (Jeannette) et Gabriel (Raymonde) et trois soeurs dont Soeur Marie-Luce, misssionnaires oblates, Alma(Ken) et Alice (Gerry). He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren Noemie, Sophie-Anne and Emile Roy as well as Anouk and Louis Daigneault. He leaves to mourn his brothers Pierre (Dolores), Paul (Jeannette), Gabriel (Raymonde) Sister Marie-Luce (Missionary Oblates), Alma (Ken) and Alice (Gerry). He also leaves his parents-in-law Gerard and Therese Bellefeuille of Cornwall and sisters-in-law Pierrette Bellefeuille, Francine Bellefeuille (Santo), Helene Dionne (John) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. KEELAN, Raymond John - Passed away peacefully with his family at his side, looking at the lake he loved so much. A great guy, he was the beloved husband of the late Virginnia Keelan for over 64 years. Loved father of Brian Keelan and his partner Sylvia Foreman, Faith Capern and her husband George, Joyce Keelan and her partner Reid Campbell and Hope Parker and her husband Philip. He will also be lovingly remembered by daughters-in-law Robyn and Sue Keelan. Proud grandfather of Ned, Kate, Jaime, Sarah, Rory, James, Edward, Matthew, Kaitlin, Trish and Eric and great grandfather of Mitchell, Lauren and Max. Predeceased by his sons Eric and Mark Keelan, parents William (Chum) and Helen (Nana) Keelan, and his brothers Bill and Jack Keelan and his sister Margaret Furlong. A prominent member of the Sarnia business community and past president of the Sarnia Chamber of Commerce, Ray was well known for his tenacious spirit, strong leadership, and his commitment to the community. An active member of Sacred Heart Parish he provided generous support not only to his parish but also to Habitat for Humanity, Covenant House, Huron House Boys Home and St. Joseph's Hospital of Sarnia. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1942 with an honours business degree, he completed four years in the Royal Canadian Navy (1942-1946) finishing his naval career as the Captain of a Corvette. Vowing never to set foot on a boat again, Ray traded in the North Atlantic for Lake Huron and the North Channel proceeding to become one of the most adventuresome and passionate sailor/cruisers on Lake Huron. Ray will be remembered for his sharp wit, zest for life, and love of a good joke. Not to forget his Love of Opera - at FULL VOLUME. He was definitely an unforgettable character! Friends will be received at the MCKENZIE BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME at 431 Christina St. N., Sarnia, on Sunday March 9th, from 2-4 pm. SAMARIN, Robert William - In lovely memory of Robert William Samarin, 72 years, who passed away Thursday, March 6th, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Born in Sudbury, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at INCO for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Robert was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 76, Sudbury. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Robert enjoyed the outdoors, working at the farm, in the garden or spending time hunting and fishing. He leaves a wonderful legacy of love for his family and friends. Beloved husband of 51 years to Sonja (Anderson) Samarin of Sudbury. Loving father of Terry Page (husband Rodger), Marla Julien (husband Dan), Kevin Samarin and Cindy Samarin (husband Todd Blais). Cherished grandfather of Justin, Amanda, Jason and Bradley. WELCH, Leonard - Our family is sad to announce the passing of our father, Leonard Walter Welch, on Friday, March 7, 2008, in his 76th year, after a brief and courageous battle with leukemia, beloved husband of Margaret Ellen Welch (Thompson). Loving father of Steve and his wife Susan, Dan and his wife Cherene, and Leslie and her husband Dave. Cherished grandfather to Sierra, Kaitlyn, Meghan, Carling, Jason, Aiden, and Liam. Will also be missed by many friends and neighbors in West Brant. Dad was a great fisherman, a lover of all sports, and a lifelong automotive enthusiast. SWEENEY, Susan Marie - Suddenly, at Aberdeen Health Care Center, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on Friday, February 29, 2008, in her 60th year, Susan Marie (Stephenson) formerly of Brantford and Paris, life partner of Fred Kiley. Survived by her mother Mary Stephenson, son James Sweeney and grandson James Kenneth Sweeney. Predeceased by her father Kenneth Stephenson (1983). Also survived by her brothers David, Roy (Nora) and Robert Stephenson (Carol) and sister Brenda Easton.
