PATTON, William Duglass "Bill" July 16, 1939 - February 26, 2008 It is with overwhelming sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Patton in his home on February 26, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bill is survived by his soulmate Gail; son TJ; mother Margaret Walker; stepchildren, Brent (Brenda), Gary (Yvonne), Donna, Brad, Jodi (Kevin); nine beautiful grandchildren, Megan, Kyla, Quinn, Chelsey, Curtis, Willie-May, Ty, Skyler, Cody; and a countless number of friends and colleagues. Sadly, Bill is predeceased by his daughter, PJ who lost her battle with cancer at age six. He will be hand in hand with PJ, forevermore.. "Here's to Billy!" SANDY, Evelyn Dorothy Evelyn Dorothy Sandy of Calgary, formerly of Nanton, passed away at the George Boyack Care Centre on February 24, 2008 at the age of 94 years. She is the loving mother of Jim (Kathy) of Claresholm and Edith (Blake) Gordon of Calgary. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Leonard in July 1969. A Private Family Interment Service will take place. TABACHNICK, Rena November 14, 1914 - February 26, 2008 Rena passed away peacefully at the Beverley Centre Nursing Home on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the age of 93 years. During her teaching career, Rena was a favourite of the many Russian students whom she taught English as second language to. Rena will be lovingly remembered by her brother Joe Tabachnick of Edmonton, AB, by her special friends Elisabeth Gitterman of Israel, Ethel Allman and Gary and Esther Silberg and family of Calgary, AB and by her numerous friends and frequent visitors from the Jewish community. She was predeceased by her husband Myer Tabachnick and by her parents Eli and Dvora Tabachnick. We would like to especially thank the nurses and staff at the Beverley Centre Nursing Home where she resided for over ten years, for all of their care and devotion. KNIGHT, Roberta Arlene May 12, 1936 - February 8, 2008 With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Roberta Arlene Knight of Calgary on Friday, February 8, 2008 at the age of 71 years, while vacationing in Maui. Roberta was born in Vancouver, BC grew up in Saskatchewan and took her nursing training in Winnipeg, MB. Roberta and Jim raised their family in Calgary, AB where they spent many happy years. Roberta enjoyed public speaking, was an active member of Toastmasters for many years, enjoyed reading and playing bridge, and was a member of CA Wives. Roberta and Jim had the opportunity to travel widely and were able to spend twelve winters at their condominium in Fountain Hills, AZ. Roberta bravely battled the degenerative disease Progressive Supranuclear Palsy for several years. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Roberta is survived by her husband Jim; son Brad (Shanta); daughter Heather; grandchildren Sean and Crystal Rampersaud. She is also survived by her sister Gail (Garry) Paulson; brother-in-law Charlie (Doris) Knight; sisters-in-law Freda Broadbridge and Charlotte Knight; and several nieces and nephews. Roberta was predeceased by her parents, Bob and Margaret Heaps, brothers-in-law Bert Knight and Cyril Broadbridge. SINGERS, Arthur J. - Veteran of World War II with British Expeditionary Forces 1939 - 1945 - Peacefully after a lengthy illness at Rideaucrest Home on Monday, February 25, 2008 in his 88th year. Cherished husband of Robina 'Ruby' of 63 years. He will be dearly missed by Lorna (Clive), Sandy (Leslie) and grandchildren Robin, Trevor, Allison and Shawna. Arthur came to Canada from Scotland in 1957. He was an ordained Elder of Ruthrieston South Church of Scotland, Aberdeen, an Elder in Eglinton United Church, Toronto and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Kingston. A Life Member of Lodge Moncreiffe No. 1332 Bridge of Earn, Perthshire on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Life Member of Burma Star Association. Before retirement, Arthur taught at Northern Secondary School and Monarch Park Collegiate, Toronto. Following Arthur's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service of his life will take place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Clergy and Princess St.) on Saturday March 1st at 2:00 P.M. JENNINGS, Scott Douglas JENNINGS, Scott Douglas - 52, Montague Rd., Dartmouth, passed away at home, in the loving arms of his wife, on February 25, 2008, after a 14 month race with cancer. It was with broken hearts that we let Scott go. Born in Halifax on March 28, 1955, he was the son of the late James and Florence Jennings. Scott showed a passion for anything mechanical from a very young age and enjoyed the many hours he spent in his garage with his family, friends and neighbours. He especially looked forward to his visits from his little friends. His other interests included camping in Nine Mile River and Porters Lake; local stock car racing; he was an avid NASCAR fan and most recently enjoyed his 1927 Ford Hot Rod. Scott is survived by his wife of 29 and a half years, Colleen (Goode). He was the proud father of Eric and Jim (Jesse Neunzig). He is also survived by his beloved granddaughter, Jennavieve, and his faithful companion, Winston; sisters, Linda (Joe) Luddington, Kathy (Fred) MacDonald, Lois Arnold; sister-in-law, Cecile MacKay; brothers, Wayne, Phil (Penny Shaw), Elvie (Verna Greenough), and Bernard Harnish; many nieces and nephews. Besides his mother and father, Scott was predeceased by his brother, Herman MacKay, and nieces, Mary MacKay and Sarah Young. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday in Port Wallis United Church, Waverley Road, Rev. Ivan Gregan officiating. GLOCK, Hedwig December 1, 1920 - February 24, 2008 It is with deep sadness that the family of Hedwig Glock announces the passing of our beloved Mama and Oma, on February 24, 2008. Hedwig died peacefully in her sleep at her residence in the Beverly Midnapore Care Centre, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Hedwig will be sadly missed by those she leaves behind to mourn - her three daughters and their spouses - Margot (Doug), Linda (Dave), and Joanne (Hoover); her nine grandchildren and their spouses - Don (Heather), Christopher (Christine), Stephanie (Stephen), Kelly, Joshua (Melissa), Nathan, Katie, Alex and Natalie; and her five great-grandchildren - Patrick, Rachel, Aiden, Malachi and Cohen. Sharing in our sorrow are Hedwig's surviving siblings - Elisabeth, Robert (Gerta) and Ruth (Willi); her brothers-in-law Robert (Ilse) and Oskar, numerous nieces and nephews in Germany, Ona and Bill and their family in Seattle, as well as several relatives in B.C., Ontario and Quebec and many cherished friends in Calgary. Hedwig was predeceased by her husband Theo in 1990 and her siblings Anna, Lina, Emma, Arnold, Alfred and Hermine. Hedwig was born in Wattweiler, Germany in 1920 and endured many hardships in her life but her own quiet strength and the love of her large family helped her get through the tough times of the era. She married Theo in 1946 and they soon became the proud parents of Margot and Linda. Seeking a better life, Theo came to Canada in 1953. The rest of the family joined him the following year and settled in Calgary. Joanne was born in 1958. Hedwig was a gentle and patient woman. She spent a good part of her life caring for others and always did so without complaint. Hedwig was a wonderful mother and was always especially thrilled when a new grandchild would arrive. She was also an outstanding homemaker, well-loved for her cooking and baking. We will all fondly remember the good times we had celebrating various occasions and life events. During her life, Hedwig was able to return to Germany several times to visit her large family, something which gave her great joy. In the late 1960's, Hedwig worked at Bruno's Meat and Delicatessen in Inglewood, where she shared many laughs with her friends and customers. After Theo became ill, she was especially grateful for the company of her friends at their "hen parties". She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her as a sweet, dear lady. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Beverly Centre for their compassionate care of our Mama and Oma. Mr. S. Bertram (Bert) Mills 1921 - 2008 MIRAMICHI, NB - Mr. Samuel Bertram (Bert) Mills, husband of Rita H. Born in Northwich, England, on June 19, 1921, he was the son of the late Samuel and Gertrude (Oakes) Mills. He was a retired employee of Flett Motors Ltd., Miramichi, employed as an motor vehicle mechanic. He attended St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church, Miramichi and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a Veteran of the Second World War, serving in Canada with the R.C.A.F. He is survived by his wife, the former Rita H. Buggie, of the South Napan Road; two daughters, Mary Grant (Francis) and Anne King (Wayne), all of the South Napan Road; four sons, Robert Mills (Noreen), of Napan, Ernest Mills (Brenda), of Strathadam, William Mills (Gloria), of Napan, Van Mills (Cathy), of Glenwood; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, James Mills; one brother, Ernest Mills. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King Street, on Thursday only, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. PILE, LLOYD THOMAS - Saint John NB, passed away on the 25th, of February, 2008, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John November 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas Walter Pile and Sarah Ann Pile (Cleeve). In his formative years he was a King Scout, played the organ at the Church of Good Sheppard and the clarinet along side his father in the Saint John Fusiliers Band. He joined the regular army at the outbreak of the Second World War. He remained in the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps following the war and retired as a Captain in 1974 after postings throughout Canada and overseas in Germany and the Middle East. Over the years he served his church and the communities in which he lived as an organist and choir member, church warden, scout leader and little theatre performer. He was an Honorary member of the Carleton Union Lodge # 8 F. & A.M. and a member of the Luxor Shrine Temple. He retired from CFB Gagetown, with his wife, to their home "Dunroamin" on the Kingston Peninsula. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Isobel (Hughes) and is survived by his daughter and guardian angel Elaine, Saint John; sons Richard (Ida), Corner Brook, NF; Thomas (Nora), Musquodoboit Harbour, NS; grandchildren Sheri Lynn Pile, Corner Brook NF, Michelle Gillingham (Matthew), Orangeville, ON, Shannon Hardy (Darren), Fort McMurray AB, Sean Pile (Teresa), Ottawa, ON, and Andrew Pile (Laura), Halifax, NS; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Joyce and brothers Lawrence and Jack. His earthly remains have been cremated. PETRYSHYN, Alexander 2008-02-27 1919 -2008 A much respected community leader and Ukrainian patriot, Mr. Alexander Petryshyn, age 89 years, passed away at St Joseph‘s Hospital in Thunder Bay on February 22, 2008. He was born to Mykhailo and Maria (nee Hrynchyshyn), the youngest of three sons, on March 31,1919 in Koropec, Ternopil Oblast, during the time of Ukraine‘s short-lived independence after World War 1. From his teenage years and throughout his life he was actively committed to the cause of Ukraine re-emerging as an independent country. In 1943, aged 24, he married Stephania (nee Zelinska, age 21) of Kuty, Stanislaviv (today Ivano Frankivsk Oblast). As the war front approached they left their home and fled west, away from the Soviet occupation and regime, along with hundreds of thousands of other refugees. Carrying only backpacks, they crossed the snow-covered Carpathian Mountains on foot to reach Slovakia in 1944. There they worked on various jobs until 1945 when the war front again compelled them to flee to Neumarkt, Germany. Alex and Stephania lived in post-war refugee barracks where their son Roman was born in July 1946. Then they lived in a Displaced Persons camp at Regensburg until 1949. Favoring Canada over Australia, the family emigrated to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) with help of friends. There a daughter, Martha, was born. Alex and Stephania Petryshyn have resided in Thunder Bay for the past sixty years. Continuing his activism in Canada, Alexander Petryshyn devoted enormous personal time to fundraising and administering Ukrainian Canadian organizational work locally, nationally and internationally. As a volunteer he served as secretary for the local branch of the Ukrainian National Federation from 1950 onward and was secretary of the Ukrainian (Fort William) Credit Union for sixteen years. He was co-founder of the local branch of Ukrainian Canadian Social Services and held executive positions (including the presidency) of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Thunder Bay in the course of four decades of voluntary work, until his health failed. Alexander Petryshyn received many awards and tributes for his work in these organizations and from grateful immigrants he helped. He was awarded the Shevchenko Medal by the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko. Alexander had trade skills, did financial bookkeeping and had office experience in Ukraine. In Fort William he worked longest in the woodroom of the Great Lakes Paper Company until his retirement in 1984. His loving wife of 65 years, Stephania; daughter Martha; son Roman and daughter in law Marusia (nee Kucharyshyn) and their sons Demian and Luca Petryshyn, all in Canada survive him. In Ukraine and the United States he is survived by his brothers‘ grand nephews and extended family. Prayer services for the late Alexander Petryshyn will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Blake Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 am, Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Transfiguration, 629 McIntosh Street, celebrated by Reverend Vladimir Chvets. Internment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and/or to the Canada Ukraine Foundation (entrusted to the care of the Blake Funeral Chapel). A tree will be planted in memory of Mr. Alexander Petryshyn in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 29, 2008.

STUART, Donald Joseph “Stu“ - Passed away Friday, February 22, 2008 surrounded by his family, at the Brantford General Hospital in his 83rd year. “Stu“ is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Catharine “Cassie“ Stuart (nee Alpaugh) and their children, Ann and Robert Lefebvre of Brantford, Donna Stuart of Brantford, Mark and Jennifer Stuart of Oakville, Phil and Chris Stuart of Brantford and Mary and Mark Anthony of Paris. “Stu“ is also survived by his grandchildren: Andy (Susan) Lefebvre, Eric (Sarah) Balazs-Lefebvre, Ian Lefebvre, John, Mary-Rose and Sara Stuart, Brock and Jessica Stuart, Jacob and Faith Anthony. “Stu“ was predeceased by one grandchild, Lee Anna Marie Lefebvre (1981). “Stu“ was Uncle “Don“ to many nieces and nephews in the Stuart, Ronson and Alpaugh families. He graduated from BCI and served overseas in England with the RCAF in WWII. After the war he worked in the sign, art and display business in Brantford and Detroit, starting his own business, Stu-Art Display, which operated from Wood Street, Brantford until 1972 and from Oakhill Drive in Brantford Township until “Stu's“ retirement in 1988. Stu had a near life long contract to hand letter school buses at Canadian Bluebird, which continued briefly even after his retirement. In retirement “Stu“ enjoyed golfing and RV camping in Michigan, Ontario and Texas, wintering in Texas for many years with a crowd of Brantford and Ontario retiree- campers. “Stu“ liked to purchase a new RV Model every year whether he needed it or not. “Stu“ was born at Brantford on Oct. 13, 1925, the son of Thomas and Verna Stuart. “Stu“ was predeceased by his parents, his sister Margaret, his brothers Jack and Wayne, and is survived by his sister Shirley Stuart of Brantford. “Stu“ was a quiet, active man with a wry sense of humour and a cartoonist's view of life and his community. “Stu“ never saw a tool or a gadget he didn't want to investigate. Roger Roy Carruthers TRURO, N.S - Roger Roy Carruthers 93, Truro, passed away at the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, on February 24, 2008. Born in Oliver, Colchester County, he was the eldest son of the late Harry and Gladys (Tucker) Carruthers. He was a well known building contractor having built many of the finer homes in Truro and vicinity. Roger was a member and former elder of St. Andrews United Church, Truro; past president of the Truro Lions Club; former member of the Truro Curling Club. He enjoyed spending his summers at the cottage in Bass River and also the many winters spent in Florida. He is survived by his wife Agnes (Roode) of sixty-eight years; sons, Gerald (Ellen), Bass River, Leigh (Lynda), Hilden and Kim (Carolyn), Moncton, New Brunswick; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Bernard; son, Kenneth James in infancy. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 29th at 2 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Jay Ettinger officiating.
