JACK, Dorothy May JACK, Dorothy May - 87, High Crest Sherbrooke Home for Special Care,formerly of Sonora, Guysborough Co., died Sunday, February 17, 2008, in the home. Born in Sonora, she was a daughter of the late William and Nora Belle (Coles) Jack. Throughout her life, Dorothy spent most of her working years in Sydney and New Glasgow. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, especially her chosen nephew, Dion McGrath. Dorothy's greatest gift to the world was her willingness to help others, a gift she gave freely. She is survived by sister, Joyce (Clyde) Metzler, Canning, Annapolis Valley; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jack, Dartmouth; Theresa Jack, Lower Sackville; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Clayton, John, Murray, Roy, Clyde, Laurie and three brothers in infancy; sisters, Hazel McGrath, Beulah MacIntosh. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in Calvary Faith Church, Sonora, where funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Wayne Bray officiating. JUURLINK (Belt), Wilhelmina Hendrika Jozefina JUURLINK (Belt), Wilhelmina Hendrika Jozefina - Born on March 14, 1922, in Slagharen, The Netherlands, died surrounded by her loving family, in the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital on February 16, 2008. She was a daughter of Anna Maria Elisabeth (Arkes) and Johannes Josephus Belt. She is survived by her children, Bernhard (Barbara), Saskatoon, Sask.; Joseph (Kathy), Calgary, Alta.; Trudy Thompson, Maitland; Herman, Shubenacadie; Elisabeth (Allan) Brown, Aylesford; Charles, Calgary, Alta.; Mary Anne (Gerry) Alley, Stewiacke; and Helena (Dave) Cole, Middle Musquodoboit; and brother, Henk, The Netherlands. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jan Herman; her sister, Ada (Juurlink), and brothers, Rieks, John, Jos. Our mother was a lifelong learner and always encouraged her children and grandchildren to continually broaden their minds. She loved to travel and experience new cultures. She was fluent in four languages and was particularly proud to be very articulate in the English language. She took great pride in being a published poet. She was a welcoming, sharing person who opened her home to all. She lived life to its fullest and was very community-minded and an advocate for those in need. She was a devout and active member of St. Bridget's and Holy Cross Roman Catholic Churches, Home and School Associations, the Farmers' Union, the East Hants Historical Society, Shu-Mil 4-H Club and the New Horizons Senior Citizens' Group. She was a vital member of the many communities in which she lived and considered each her home. In recent years she resided in Middle Musquodoboit. Oma was loved by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other children. Our mother lived life by the same philosophy expressed by Anne Frank in the following quotation, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world". Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 19 , from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. A funeral mass will be held in St. Bridget's Roman Catholic Church, Shubenacadie, on Wednesday, February 20, at 2 p.m., Father Gregory-Peter Agyeman officiating. Immediately following the service a reception will be held at St. Bridget's. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Milford. SNURE, Janavee (nee Rogers) Peacefully on January 29th, 2008, Jan joined her beloved husband, George. She was cherished and is survived by sons, Gary (Joanne), Roger (Sheryl) and Reg. Groundwater 74, of Indian Mountain, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Born in Lutes Mountain, he was the son of the late Earlie and Winnifred (Stiles) Groundwater. Ray was retired as Production Manager at Moncton Crushed Stone (Division of Modern Enterprises) with 43 years service; charter member of Hillside Baptist Church, former member of the Church Board of Directors and former member of the New Brunswick Road Builders Association. He enjoyed hockey, his favorite team The Montreal Canadiens as well as the AHL Moncton teams. Family was his ultimate pride and joy and meant all the world to him. His hobbies included farming, his horses, cows and rebuilding his antique tractors. MARKS, JAMES LABARON (1941- 2008) The death of James Marks of Lincoln, NB, occurred at the Oromocto Public Hospital on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Born in Fredericton, he was the son of the late James S. and Jean (Hayward) Marks of Fredericton NB. He was employed at U.N.B. for approximately twenty-six years. He enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to Blue Grass music. He also was an avid hockey fan (New York Rangers). Survived by his wife, Joan; one son, Jamie Marks (Anne) of Beaverdam; one daughter, Stacey Marks-Davidson (Michael) of Rusagonis; six grandchildren, Andrée-Anne, Victoria and Julian Marks. WHYTE, CHRISTOPHER F. (SCOTTY) 1927 – 2008 On Friday February 15, 2008 at the Timmins and District Hospital at the age of 80, Scotty left for a better place. He was born in Dundee, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1957. He is survived by his sons Christopher A. Whyte (Michelle) of Field, ON, Gary Whyte (Jennifer) of Texas and Richard Whyte (Melanie) of Texas. He is also survived by the mother of his sons Jean Whyte of Texas, his grandchildren Tammie Whyte (Jean), Melanie Ranelli and Sarah Whyte, his great-grandchildren Bradley, Nicholas and Daniel, and he will always be remembered by his special friend Gisèle Ranta. Scotty was known by many for his friendliness and his sense of humour. He enjoyed spending time reminiscing on his life in the old country. POIRIER, Pamela Denise POIRIER, Pamela Denise - 48, Windsor, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Pam was born on August 22, 1959, in the old Payzant Memorial Hospital, Windsor. She was the daughter of the late Ignatius St. Clair "Steve" and Marilyn Symms. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Edward; son Leonard and his common-law wife Shelly Bogensberger; sisters, Darlene, Ontario; and Heather; brothers, Steven and Jamie, Windsor; also nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her grandparents, Kathleen and Raymond Benedict; nephew, Jason Benedict; father-in-law, Alphonse Poirier. Pam joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1978 as a Steward where she severed for 12 years. In 1982 Pam was one of the first women to go to sea on a Canadian Armed Forces ship, H.M.C.S Cormorant. When she retired she attained the rank of Sergeant (Petty Officer, 2nd Class). Pam suffered a long illness, especially over the past two years. She was a loving and caring wife and mother and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed her. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Jim Norton officiating. MORASH, Grant Linwood, F.C.A. MORASH, Grant Linwood, F.C.A. - Grant Linwood Morash passed away peacefully at home on February 14, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer (melanoma). He died in the arms of his devoted wife of 48 years, Gretta, surrounded by his family. Grant was born in Chester, and he graduated from Chester Municipal High School with three scholarships. He was admitted into the five year co-operative program at Queen's University's School of Business Administration, and articled with Gurnham and Hanright, Chartered Accountants. The firm's name was later changed to Touche Ross, and now Deloitte. After passing the UFE's, he was awarded the designation C.A. He moved up within the firm quickly due to his tireless work ethic and was made partner at a young age. He was later appointed Senior Vice-President, Atlantic Provinces, for Touche Ross Limited. He was a Trustee in Bankruptcy and Insolvency. Grant was the Partner-in-Charge for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island from 1979-1998. He retired from the firm in 2001. He was known as an innovative leader and respected highly as a mentor. He served on several major committees of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, including Chairman of the Professional Development and Education Committees. He served on Council for seven years and was president of I.C.A.N.S. from 1974 to 1976. Grant was a member of the C.I.C.A. and I.P.E.C., and the first Nova Scotia appointee to the National Co-Ordination Committee, and served on the Finance Committee which drafted the initial terms of reference for the Co-Ordination Committee. Grant was past president of Duc D'Anville School in Clayton Park, where he established their library. Grant was appointed Commissioner of the Halifax City School Board, from 1971 to 1974. He served two years as chairman of the Committee for Children with Learning Disabilities. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Medical Review Board on Lieutenant Governor's Warrants for 10 years. He served on the board of Neptune Theatre Foundation for nine years and as president of Neptune 1975-1977. Grant took over as president during difficult financial times for the theatre. Under his leadership, the theatre became very successful, both artistically and financially. He took great pride in bringing artistic director and actor John Neville to Halifax. In appreciation, of his dedication, Grant was given the Honorarium of Life Director. Grant was also a director of the United Way. He was president of the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation and also served on the board for 25 years. He served on the National Board of Canadian Health Partners. Grant served on the board of Symphony Nova Scotia. He played a leading role in a landmark fundraising campaign, titled "The Symphony Explosion", which was critical to the future success of the symphony. Grant was on the Board of the Convent of the Sacred Heart (private school), and was instrumental in the transitional turnover from the Sisters of the Sacred Heart to the Sacred Heart School of Halifax. He was a former member of Ken-Wo, Halifax Board of Trade, St. Paul's Church, St. John's Church and St. Peter's Church, Ashburn Golf Club, Saraguay Club, The Halifax Club, and the Bachelor's Club. He was a long-time supporter and friend of St. Francis Xavier University. In 2002, Grant was appointed to the board of C.D.I.C. (Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation) where he served on the Audit Committee and the Human Resources Committee. He took this challenge on with great pride and energy, and never lost sight that he was directly serving the Canadian public. Members of the board have stated that Grant "was committed to sound governance and management of Canada's financial system." He was awarded the designation "Fellow" by his professional peers, an award given for achieving an impeccable professional career, a sterling reputation and dedicated service. The countless hours and hard work he devoted to charitable work was exemplary and rarely matched. Grant was well-known for his straightforward business approach and was a very quick study. In his insolvency practice, he rescued and turned around a great many businesses. He took his thanks in seeing the future success of many clients who were struggling when he first met them. He spent most of his life rooting for the underdog and the underprivileged. Grant was a great guy and loved by all who knew him. He was a voracious reader of history, was a duplicate bridge player and enjoyed live theatre and the arts. He traveled extensively with his wife and in later years spent winters in Florida and summers in the Annapolis Valley at his beach house. He had a great love of golf, and will miss all his old golfing partners at Ashburn, especially his Tuesday and Thursday buddies. Grant was a tireless worker and also full of life. He loved his career and enjoyed a challenge. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife Gretta; his daughter, Terri-Leigh Morash Harlow (Tim) of Halifax; his only son, Dr. Christopher Morash (Colleen) of Ottawa, and his daughter, Jayne-Rae Morash Kuehm (Kenneth) of Halifax; grandchildren, Christopher and Caitlin, Halifax; Phillip and Bobby, Ottawa; and his best buddies, Oliver and Grant, Halifax; siblings, Murray and Maureen. He was predeceased by his parents, Gertrude and Walter Morash. He is now with the Angels, in God's hands. "Remember me when the salt air embraces you on a summer's day, and when the cool breeze off the ocean blows your hair, I am the golden sun that breaks through a dreary day, I am with you always, my dear sweet grandchildren." CONNELL, William Francis "Bill" CONNELL, William Francis "Bill" - 90, Middleton, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born August 21, 1917, in North Sydney, he was a son of the late John and Mary (MacDonald) Connell. Bill served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in the Canadian Army in Canada and overseas during the Second World War. Following the war, Bill became a pharmacist and served in the army as a hospital pharmacist and later hospital administrator until his military retirement in 1966. In his civilian life, Bill worked a short term at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and then at the Greenwood Pharmacy, Greenwood, for many years. Bill was a member of St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church, Middleton; Middleton Curling Club, Eden Golf and Country Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. He is survived by son, Richard (Linda), Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.; Michael (Laura), Edmonton, Alta.; Shari (Reg) Lund, Trout Lake; grandchildren, Dustin (Tara), Mitchell, Shane, Brett and Caitlin Connell; great-granddaughter, Emily, all of Alberta; and family friend, Terry Webster-Lamrock, Kingston. He was predeceased by his wife, the former, Mary Catherine Boudreau; sister, Gertrude (Murdoch) Morrison. de JONG, Jacoba (nee Kans) February 21, 1916 - February 7, 2008 At 91 years of age, Jacoba "Coby" de Jong passed away peacefully in her sleep in Calgary at the Bow View Manor. Coby, the second youngest of two sisters and two brothers, was born and raised in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Literally the girl next door, Coby married Tiede de Jong on July 16, 1941 and they made their home in Rotterdam and Schiedam. In 1960, Jacoba and her husband Tiede, along with their two children, Maria and Ted, made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada. Their journey led them to Calgary, AB, where they resided for the rest of their lives. Coby was filled with abundant energy and an enthusiasm for life. She was an avid member of the Dutch Reformed Church, Ladies Auxiliary, the Dutch Canadian Club, and a friend to all who met her. Coby loved singing with both the church choir and the Dutch Canadian choir, and could always be found humming a melody. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, taking endless walks, dancing, and traveling with her husband. Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was clearly displayed by the enormous smile on her face each time they were present. Jacoba was predeceased in 2006 by her beloved husband and partner in life, Tiede, with whom she is now reunited. FLEMMING, Harry John FLEMMING, Harry John - 74, of 2001 Brunswick St., Halifax, died peacefully with family nearby on February 16, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late John A. and Edna Tays Flemming. Raised in Truro, he was a graduate of Mount Allison University and Dalhousie University Law School. He was a journalist for 50 years, having been an editorial writer for The Chronicle Herald and The Globe and Mail and a columnist for The Daily News. For some years he was a weekly political commentator on CBC TV's First Edition program. Most recently he recorded short commentaries on Halifax Information Radio. In the late 1970's Harry created and edited a weekly newspaper, Barometer, published by H.H. Marshall, Ltd. He also worked for the federal Atlantic Development Board, was executive vice-president of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council and was a political advisor in the government of Premier Gerald Regan. He was the Liberal candidate for Cumberland-Colchester in the 1968 federal general election. Harry was married to Glen Maureen (Perry) Flemming, Halifax, and is also survived by daughters, Cara Flemming, Toronto, and Dr. Anne Flemming, Vancouver; son, Andrew and daughter-in-law Susan; and grandchildren, Kate, William and Sean Flemming, Halifax; sister, Carolyn MacDonald, Truro. He will be missed by his dear friend, Lois Swain and her daughter Glenda. Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by brother-in-law, Donald "Lick" MacDonald. Harry was grateful to Lois and his family, especially daughter-in-law Susan, for their help and support during his brief illness. Thanks are extended to staff in the emergency room and Section 8.2 at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, for the extraordinary care they gave Harry during his few days in hospital. As he wished, his body was donated to medical science, and remains will be interred in Gay's River Cemetery, Colchester Co., at a later date. Visitation and a reception to celebrate Harry's life and to reminisce will be held on Sunday, February 24, from 1-4 p.m. at Ashburn Golf Club, 3250 Joseph Howe Dr., Halifax. REID, Wilbert Webster "Bill", Capt., Lt. RCN (Ret'd) REID, Wilbert Webster "Bill", Capt., Lt. RCN (Ret'd) - 100, Halifax, passed away after a lengthy illness on February 15, 2008, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Gabarus, Cape Breton, March 3, 1907, he was a son of the late Charles and Eva (MacDonald) Reid. He had a wide ranging marine career, beginning at the age of 15. Before the Second World War, he was on the cargo ships and in the Merchant Navy and sailed all over the world. During the war, he survived the sinking of the HMCS Fraser. He also served on HMCS Thunder, HMCS Nanoose and the HMCS Chilliwack, his favourite ship. After the war, he worked for the Department of National Defence as Captain of the Fire Boats, from which he retired after 25 years of service. He was a long-time member of the United Memorial Church, Halifax, and belonged to a number of senior citizen groups. He will be sadly missed by wife, Vera, Halifax; daughter, Margaret, Halifax; Flo and Lyndon McIsaac and family, Hammonds Plains; and many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Bernice (Nickerson); brothers, Vinal, Aubrey, Albert, Wiley, Harry, Howard; sister, Matilda in infancy. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23, at 2 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Interment at a later date. CHAPMAN, Elsie (nee Babak) June 25, 1931 - February 15, 2008 Elsie Chapman (nee Babak) of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice on Friday, February 15, 2008 at the age of 76 years. Elsie was born on June 25, 1931 to parents Fred and Julie Babak in Preeceville, SK. As a deaf child, she attended the Saskatchewan School for the Deaf at a young age. The school, where she completed her high school education, became her second home and she was proud of her attendance and accomplishments. Elsie was a gifted student and athlete who participated in many school sports, continuing her athletic pursuits into adulthood as a champion tenpin bowler. Elsie married Percy Chapman, a teacher of the deaf at the school, on August 3, 1953. The two were inseparable until Percy's passing in July of 1991. They had two sons, Robert (Rob) and Wendell (Dell) and devoted all of their time and effort into raising them, keeping their boys involved in many sports and activities. Countless hours were spent teaching, watching, mentoring and driving their sons to hockey rinks, bowling allies, ball diamonds and golf courses across western Canada. Elsie is lovingly remembered by her son Dell, daughter-in-law Claudette and grandsons Allistair and Lowell; daughter-in-law Karen Chapman-Slater and granddaughters Brianne and Sarah Chapman; and sister Lena Sawchuk (nee Babak). She was predeceased by her husband, Percy; son, Rob; sisters Ann, Tillie, and Amelia; and brother, Bill. A Celebration of Elsie's life will be held at Grace Lutheran Manor (3600 Sarcee Road S.W.) on Sunday, February 24, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm. Elsie's cremated remains will be interred at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery in Saskatoon, SK, where she will join the love of her life, Percy, and son Rob.
