VANDERSCHOOT, Auke (Al) - Passed away courageously but peacefully on Friday, 18 Jan. 2008 in his 98th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Antonia (1984) and brother Peter (Myrtle) and sisters Hiltje and Wijke. Father of Jim (Margaret) and Jane (Trygve) Jenssen, Union Bay, BC. Dear Opa of Agnes and Christine Vanderschoot, and Sonya, Kevin and Monica Jenssen. Also survived by sister-in-law Lammie de Boer in the Netherlands. Favourite Uncle of Gerard and Elske in the Netherlands. Born in Rotsterhaule (Friesland), The Netherlands, Al and his family came to Canada in 1949. After the war he received a commendation from the Allied Forces for “service rendered to Allied personnel“. The family lived in Eastern Ontario for two years before moving to the Falls where Al worked at Stamford race track until it closed. he then had a fruit farm in St. Davids, and also worked in the construction of the Hydro tunnel. Al also farmed in Milton until 1956, when he returned to the Falls to manage the Mount Carmel Farm for nine great years. From 1965, Al worked as a custodian for the Niagara South School board, which he loved, and retired from in 1975. Numerous people in Niagara Falls then benefited from Al's volunteerism in subsequent years - He drove “elderly people“ to doctor and hospital appointments, he kept score for the blind bowlers, was active at Coronation Centre (his second home), took numerous bus trips as he enjoyed travel, raised funds and donated to many charities. Al's many friends will best remember him as a stand-up comedian, for he loved to play cards and to tell jokes, especially at his birthday parties. He will also be sadly missed by his best friends Ron Coates and Victor Betts (the boys), with whom he enjoyed dinner every Friday night at Basell's for the last ten years or so. CORDA, Giuseppe "Joe" Devoted husband and loving father died peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2008 after a courageous fight with cancer. KILREA, Kenneth Hector After a long and courageous battle, the family announces with sorrow Ken's death at St. Vincent's Hospital, January 19, 2008 at the age of 67. Son of the late Kenneth Kilrea and Frances (Loates). Loving husband and soulmate of Jeanette. Cherished father of Jason. Dear brother of Judy (Cameron). Hec leaves behind his buddy Bert, his good friend Teddy, loved in-laws Louise and James Scott, Harvey and Pam Woodrow, Michele Woodrow, Craig Woodrow, nieces Alexandra, Sherry, Tara, Crystal, Tiffany, nephews Daniel and Brad. Fondly remembered by his companion "Ben" and his many friends, relatives and loved ones. Hec lived life to the fullest and he was happiest smoking a cigar and riding around in his prized 1987 "Caddie". He was master of the New York Times Crossword and Jeopardy. Ken was an avid music fan and king of trivia. Hec's message to all - be sure to have a colonoscopy. It could save your life. LORD, Elizabeth Helene "Beth" (nee Silliker) Elizabeth "Beth" Lord, 51, wife of Wayne Lord, of Bathurst, passed away as a result of a motor vehicle accident on the outskirts of Bathurst on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of Robert and Lois (Ramsdell) Silliker. She taught music for over 26 years and was an Elementary Math Coach for District #15, Bathurst, member of the NBTA, actively involved in youth choir, musical theater and was an avid reader. Besides her parents of Kanata and her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lindsay Lord (Daniel Doucet) and Kaitlyn Lord both at home; one brother Laurence "Larry" Silliker (Lesley) of Kanata, ON.; one sister Shawn Silliker (David St. Jean) of Stittsville, ON; several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service attended by 800 mourners was held on Thursday January 17, 2008 at Bathurst First United Church. Burial will be in the spring. McFARLANE, Ethel Peacefully went on to her Heavenly Father on January 20th, 2008 at Bronson Place of the Glebe Centre. It was difficult for us to let you go but, knowing that God's gentle hand had led you home, helped us with the pain of missing you. You were loved by many and revered by all who were blessed to meet you. Ethel (nee Murdock) was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Morgan McFarlane who was the minister of Bell Street United Church from 1966 to 1978. She was a devoted and caring mother to Margaret Peasey (Les) of Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia; Marilyn Allan (Cliff) of Belleville, Ontario; Murdock (Debbie) of Beaconsfield, Quebec; Jane Burton (Bob) of Ottawa, Ontario, Shirley Underwood (Richard) of Toronto, Ontario and Greg (Pam) of Russell, Ontario. Dear sister of the late Clarence Davidson Murdock and the late Reginald William Murdock. Her loving and nurturing connection will be greatly missed by her 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. BEAUDOIN, Reverend Dorothy (nee Ireman (Yzerman)). "Preacher and teacher." Peacefully at Mount Sinai Hospital on January 18, 2008, at the age of eighty-one, following a long, final battle with cancer. Loving and beloved wife of Norman, mother of Kathleen (Kathy), and sister of Richard. Predeceased by her parents, Thelma Hodgeson and Antony Ireman, and by her sister, Mavis Wensley. She was also the companion of canine Cocoa, the aunt of numerous nieces and nephews, and a cherished friend to many. A woman of intelligence, wit, warmth, and compassion; and she faced her passing as she faced her life, with courage and acceptance. Visitation will follow her memorial service on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 1 p.m. at St. Lambert United Church, 85 Desaulniers Boulevard, St. Lambert, QC. Interment will be at a later date in Hawthorne-Dale Cemetery. LEIGHTON, Thomas Swinburne. December 12, 1921 to January 20, 2008. Tom passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday, January 20, 2008 at Grand River Hospital, Freeport Health Centre in Kitchener, Ontario, in his eighty-seventh year, following a bravely borne and lengthy illness. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Doris, his daughters Anne (Eric Lavender) of Kitchener, Helen (Andrew Maxwell) of Mississauga, and his son, Stephen of Mississauga. Tom is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Robert and Katherine Lavender, and Alexander, Nicholas and Emily Maxwell. Tom is also survived by his sister Stella Kelly, his sisters-in-law, Marie Guest and Isabel Thornton, and many nieces and nephews in England. Tom was born in Seaham Harbour, England . He served in the British Merchant Marine (Blue Funnel Line) during the Second World War during which he survived a torpedo attack which sank the ship on which he was serving. Tom joined Lloyds Register of Shipping in 1949, and lived and worked in many countries during his tenure. He was their Senior Principal Surveyor for Canada from 1969 until his retirement in 1986, and will be well remembered in the marine community. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 4:30 p.m., at the McKersie Kocher Funeral Home, 114 Main Street, Milton, Ontario. Please join the family for a celebration of Tom's Life at the Grand Chalet Banquet Hall 324 Steeles Ave. Milton. The family requests no flowers. OBITUARY KATHRYN ANNE MUNRO Dec. 21, 1968 - Jan. 17, 2008 After an incredibly courageous battle with cancer, Kathryn Anne Munro passed away January 17, 2008 while surrounded by family and friends. She was predeceased by her father Jesse and survived by her husband Mike Simons, her daughter Brianna, her mother Yvonne, her brother Dave (Claudia), and her parents-in-law Paule and Hermann. There are many other extended family members and friends who loved her deeply and will miss her unspeakably. Kath, the bravery with which you faced your illness was nothing less than inspiring. SANDBERG,John Halvard 2008-01-22 John Halvard Sandberg passed away peacefully on Friday, January 18, 2008 at the age of 90 in Surrey, BC. He was born in Fort William on February 12, 1917. He joined the R.C.N.V.R. at the beginning of the Second World War and served aboard the H.M.C.S. Restigouche throughout the war years as Chief Petty Officer. After the war he stayed with the Navy in Vancouver for several years until he started with B.C. Ferries as first mate and later as captain until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Gladys of Surrey, B.C. and brother Eric (Dolores) of Thunder Bay, as well as numerous nephews and nieces and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, Johan and Hedvig Sandberg, sisters Heldy and Helga, brothers Harold and Henry, stepdaughter Joan and stepson Dickie. Memorial services will be held at Valleyview Funeral Home in Surrey on Saturday, February 2, 2008. Donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 11040 River Road, Delta, B.C. MARTYN, Janet Louise 2008-01-22 On Sunday January 20, 2008, Janet passed away peacefully with family at her side. Martyn, and by her sister Thelma Wismer. She will be fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews and by her many friends. She enjoyed curling, travel and playing bridge. She was a Life Master with the ACBL and directed games for local bridge clubs. She also enjoyed the several years she spent at BDO Dunwoody.
