PULLEN, Ethel - It is with sadness that the family of Ethel Pullen announces her passing on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the Kirkland & District Hospital at the age of 85 years. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Morgan; son Chester; parents Eduard and Edna Desaulniers and brothers Archie and Floyd Desaulniers. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Lorraine (Warren) Peaker, Judy (Ron) Brown, Mary (Larry) Morrison, Brad (Darleen) Pullen, Dale (Isabelle) Pullen, Albert Pullen and Blaine (Claudette) Pullen. Ethel will be fondly remembered by her 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Myrlle Roy and extended family. LANG, Edward John Samuel At the Edinburgh Residence on Thursday, December 20, 2007. Born Devonshire, England in 1910, came to Canada with his wife Edna in 1947 to work at the newly created Defence Research Board (DBR) at Val Cartier, Quebec as a mechanical engineer. He also served with DRB at its Headquarters in Ottawa. Since his wife died, he has been well looked after at the Edinburgh. TARRANT, James Frederick October 4, 1918 - December 22, 2007 Jim passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his sister Betty (Ken), numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends, particularly his close friends Bruce and Margaret and their family. Jim was born and raised in Calgary, attending Central School and Crescent Heights High School. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in February 1941, serving with the 2nd Canadian Corps in England. He landed on Juno Beach, serving in Holland, Belgium and Germany. He received the "Gallantry in the Field" award twice. Jim also received the Belgium Croix de Guerre with Palm for recognition of distinguished service; the Netherlands Anniversary Medal to veterans on the 50th and 55th Anniversary of the Liberation. On his return to Calgary in February 1946, Jim started his career with the Canadian Western Natural Gas Company and worked there until his retirement. Jim's passion was classical music and he devoted a lot of time and energy to the musical society in Calgary. He was a fine accompanist and conducted the Austrian Canadian Club's Heimatecho, as well as founding and conducting their men's choirs. Jim was also an avid mountaineer, beginning his climbing career in 1935. He has climbed throughout North America, Europe and the Himalayas. He was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, receiving an award in 1989 for fifty years of membership. In October 2007, he was awarded an honourary membership from the Alpine Club of Canada in recognition of outstanding service to the Canadian Climbing Community. Jim traveled extensively and felt most at home in Austria, particularly Vienna "the city of his dreams". He has also been recognized by the Austrian Government. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Agape Hospice for the wonderful, compassionate care provided to Jim. Born in Campbellford, ON, Alice married John "Jack" Runions on August 16, 1941. For many years she worked for an optometrist, Dr. Kirk. Maisey loved the outdoors, having a deep appreciation for nature and the solitude of the seasons. This love was further expressed through many memorable hours spent boating and fishing with her husband, Jack. A devoted wife, Maisey dearly missed their time spent together, following his passing. Sylvia E. (Agnew) Killins 1933 - 2007 Sylvia E. (Agnew) Killins, of Caledonia Mountain, passed away at the Forest Dale Nursing Home in Riverside Albert on Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Born in Moncton, NB on January 27, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mable (Kervin) Agnew. Sylvia retired in 1991 from NB Tel working as an operator for many years. HOYLE, Dennis George 1922 - 2007 Dennis George Hoyle of Calgary, died on Sunday, December 23, 2007 shortly after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, at the age of 85 years. The seeds for Anglophilia were sown for Dennis with his birth near Heston, England on February 28, 1922. His heartiness enabled him to survive two childhood bouts of Scarlet Fever and to persevere through later maladies. As an adolescent with his sole sibling, Joan, the self-styled "Hoyle Twins" helped instill in others a love for travel and knowledge, coaxing a friend out of London for the first time in his life (to the country), encouraging in him a desire to see the world, ultimately leading to his enlistment in WWII. As a result of a bureaucratic foul-up, a shipload of men, including his friend, were killed during the war by Japanese forces - incensing Dennis to the point that he dropped out of an electrician trade school and signed up for duty in the R.A.F., a service that he later recalled as a mindless waste of a few years. In 1947, his wife Elsie's homesickness provided enough incentive to uproot him from London and transplant himself to her hometown, Calgary, along with their two-year-old daughter, Beverley-Jean, where he became a foreman for AGT in short time. Early in his career, he received a severe electric shock, through which he experienced a few epileptic seizures over the course of his life; due to the stigma of disease at the time, plus the uncertainty of possible after-effects, his condition was cloaked in euphemism and rarely referred to, though it had a significant impact on his life. He helped others where he could and offered up his extensive knowledge of history, genealogy, gardening and photography whenever an opportunity arose - often during lunches or on camping and hiking trips he and Elsie arranged for friends, family, co-workers, exchange-students and visitors alike, always having a relevant story or photograph at hand. The lengths to which he and his family went to help others included providing support and a home for a time to some newly arrived immigrants from Zimbabwe during the 1970's - the daughter and grandson of a couple that married, along with Elsie and Dennis, in a double ceremony in 1944. When his wife became hospitalized in her final years with Alzheimer's disease, his devotion led him to visit her there every day until her death in 1996. Despite this, he remained a part of the Calgary Outdoor Club and helped to distribute food hampers, always remaining more than willing to show slides and regale about his life and travels around the world. Dennis will be sorely missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his daughter, Beverley, her husband Bill Shaw and their children, Tamara, Christopher and Jeremy. DRAKE, Marvin Marv's year-long battle with pancreatic cancer ended on December 19, 2007 when he passed away at the Palliative Care Unit in the Foothills Hospital. Memories of his life will be cherished by Dorte, his partner for twenty-eight years, his daughters Marvette and Madison, son-in-law Kevin, stepson Jason, grandsons Cort and Kade and by his friends and extended family. Marv enjoyed his retirement at his home in Redwood Meadows. His passions included golfing, camping and riding his Harley with his "Biker Buds". Many good times were had at family get-togethers, accompanied by good food and wine. He looked forward to winter getaways in Hawaii, Phoenix and Mexico. Marv lived a full life. In Marv's memory, an Open House will be held January 13, 2008 between 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at his home in Redwood Meadows. Friends and family are welcome to drop by.
