NOËL, J. LEON - J. Leon Noël passed away unexpectedly at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, October 20th, 2007. He was the son of the late Francois and Martina (Arseneau) Noël. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas (Mary) and Francis (Janice) Noël all of Saint John; nieces, Janine, Paula and Katie; as well as great-niece, Genieve; great-nephew, Michael; and aunts, Yvonne and Jean; and uncle, Joe. Leon worked on many construction projects in and around Saint John and also as a C.P.R. Trucker for many years. Leon was faithfully found presiding over the offertory collections at the 4 PM Saturday Mass at St. Pius X Church. He will be sadly missed by the many friends he made on his daily walks throughout the city. Leon will be resting at Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, Saint John, N.B. where visitation will take place on Sunday 7 to 9 PM and Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Father Douglas McNeill will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial from St. Pius X Church, Somerset Street on Tuesday at 11 AM with a reception to immediately follow in the church basement. ALEXANDER, ALBERTA "BERT" (PRESCOTT) - The passing of Alberta "Bert" (Prescott) Alexander, wife of the late Ralph L. Alexander, occurred on Sunday, October 20, 2007 at the York Manor Nursing Home. Born on August 10, 1916 in Saint John, NB, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna (McGowan) Chaffey. Alberta was a member of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and was a longtime member of the Devon Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was a housewife and also volunteered at York Manor. She loved spending time with her friends and family, loved country music and her cats. Alberta is survived by two sons, Harold Alexander of Fredericton, NB, Ronald D. and Anne Alexander of St. Catherine's, ON; two grandchildren, Alicia and Sarah Alexander of Fredericton, NB; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Alberta was predeceased by one daughter, Janet Lynch; two brothers and three sisters. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB, on Tuesday, October 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held from York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 2 pm with Rev. Doug Blaikie officiating. Interment will take place in the Gladstone Cemetery, Fredericton Junction, NB at a later date. David "Dave" R. Melanson 1957 - 2007 Dave Melanson, 50, of Riverview, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Ralph and Catherine "Kay" (Belliveau) Melanson. Dave was an avid sportsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a musician and songwriter and was a member of the Hollow Bodies. A thoughtfully, loving and kind husband, father, brother and a friend to young and old, all those who knew him, loved him. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Darla Melanson; his children, Janice, Matthew, Jamie, Cody and Megan; grandchildren, Chanelle and Jayden; his sister, Brenda Richard (Felix) of Moncton; his brothers, Barry Melanson (Debbie) of Fords Mills, and Jeff Melanson (Karen) of South Branch; his mother-in-law, Sandy Irwin of Moncton as well as nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Roy A. Hopper Roy Albert Hopper, 94, of Colpitts Settlement passed away peacefully at home Saturday October 20, 2007 Born at Allison he was a son of the late Whitmore and Etta (Bannister) Hopper. In his early working life Roy worked at Fred Colpitts Fox Ranch and later was a heavy equipment operator with D.O.T. and retired as a carpenter. He enjoyed the outdoors, family gatherings and time spent at the camp. Survived by his beloved wife, Peggy (nee Colpitts); five children, Debbie Carter (Larry), Lorne (Pam), Cheryl McCormick (Kevin), Richard (Yvonne) all of Colpitts Settlement, Marlene Colpitts (Barry) of Salisbury; grandchildren, Kevin, Christa Steeves (Mark), Michael, Kelli, Tim, Shauna and Jordie; sisters, Esther Elliott, Rita Geldart, Alberta Hopper; brothers, Wendell (Juanita) and Randall; and by several nieces and nephews. Ulysse Gallant 1936 - 2007 COCAGNE, NB - Ulysse Gallant, 71, passed away at home on October 20, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Born in Grande-Digue on February 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Ovila Gallant and the late Eva Donelle. He was a retired fisherman and attended La Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Grande-Digue. Ulysse is survived by his wife, Jeannette LeBlanc; two step daughters, Bernadette Chase (Jim Martin), Edmonton, Alb., and Joanne Legere (Herve), Cocagne; two step sons, Albert Chase, Calgary, Alb., and Yvon Chase (Theresa), Rockland Maine, USA; two sisters, Alma Pellerin (Eddie), Shediac, and Leona Gallant, Moncton; two brothers, Joseph Gallant (Simonne), St-Antoine, and Fred Gallant (Jeannita), Grande-Digue; six grandchildren, Allan, Marc, Mathieu, Tommy, Natalie and Melissa. BRADLEY, FREDA WINNIFRED Freda Winnifred Bradley, 63, Halifax & Dartmouth, most recently of Enfield, passed away Friday, October 19, 2007 in the VG Site, QEII. Born May 31, 1944 in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Hubert and Anne Ruth Doody. Freda attended Dalhousie University and obtained her BA in 1965 and later worked at Baycrest Jewish Home For The Aged in Toronto. She later graduated with her Masters from the Maritime School of Social Work in 1980. In the Halifax area, she worked at the Department of Community services and later at the Department of Mental Health at the Nova Scotia Hospital as well as at Bedford Sackville Mental Health Clinic. Freda had worked for the department of Mental Health for 20 years during which time she was very socially active in her community as well as championing many social causes on a broader scale as head of the social Action Committee within the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, having served as vice and then later president of NSASW, working for equality and improving the life of those less fortunate and being the voice of those in need. Freda retired after 20 years of work in the Mental Health field. After her retirement, as well as during her tenure, she devoted much of her time to such causes and was a member of many groups for Social Action and change. She made many dear friends through this journey of devotion and compassion. Freda is survived by her son, Jason B. Bradley; sisters, Margaret Anne Doody and Mary Howell-Jones; niece, Meghan Doody; nephew, Eamon Doody. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Arthur Edward Cornwall, who was a notable turn of the century photographer in the Hantsport area. McNAUGHTON, Fergus George April 6, 1924 - October 19, 2007 Fergus died peacefully at home on October 19. He was a loving, kind and gentle man, well loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marie, his sister Helen Shaughnessy, his children Leslie (Hal), Debbie, Laurie (Michael), Harry (Karen), Doug, Peggy (Greg), Gordon (Cathy), Fergus, Steven (Linda), Bruce, JoJo (Jeff) and James, and his 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. O'CONNOR, Ronald Stewart 'Ron' - After a long and courageous battle with cancer, at home, on Friday October 19, 2007, in his 89th year. Beloved husband to the late Etta (Jackson) (1997); loved step dad to Robert Jackson (Wendy) of Harley. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and most especially by; his longtime caregivers and 'little family' June and Katie MacGregor, his niece Patsy Salisbury who looked after his personal affairs, his nephews, Shawn Kitchen, who refered to Ron as his ever dependable mentor buddy, and Brent Gibbons who looked after and cared for uncle Ron in his last few days. Born in North View on May 16, 1917, he was the son of the late Ernest and Arena (Beach) Burgoyne. Ross leaves behind his daughter, Lola (Edward) Bell of North View; his sisters, Hazel MacQueen of Three Brooks, Vera Kennard of Alberta, Norma Larlee of British Columbia; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Burgoyne (Hathaway); sisters, Lottie Harrison and Hattie Green; and brother, Bruce Burgoyne. WRAY, William Bill Hugh - passed away at Eastwood Manor Retirement Home, Ridgeway, in his 90th year on Thursday, October 18, 2007, with the comfort of his family and friends at his side. Bill was born on November 3, 1917 in Broughshane, County Antram, Northern Ireland. He came over to Canada on April 25, 1928 with his parents, 2 brothers and a sister aboard the S. S. Antonio. Bill lived a part of his life in Brampton and Listowel before moving to Welland to work at Atlas Steels. Bill signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Victoria, B.C. from November 12, 1943 - May 1, 1946 with the rank of L.A.C. He was awarded the War Medal 1939 - 1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service medal. Bill came back to Welland and resumed his employment with Atlas Steels as a crane operator in the melting department until his retirement. Bill was a well rounded athlete excelling in more than one sport. An ardent golfer, he won the Westbrook Senior Men's Championships in 1974-76; 1978; 1980-85; 1987-89. He also represented the Club at the Tournament of Champions all those years. Bill taught golf to the Juniors at Westbrook Golf Club for 25 years. Bill coached the Plymouth Cordagettes to the Ontario P.W.S.U. Ladies Ontario Championship in 1948. Our mother Elaine Pillsworth was also on that team. He also coached the Welland Lionettes Junior Girls softball team to regional finals in 1949 & 1950. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Senior Bowling Team that won the Ontario Championships in 1953-54; 1970; 1973-74; 1990-91. With the help of the Welland Badminton Club he formed a Badminton Club at Atlas Steels for the employees. Bill was honoured twice on the Sports Wall of Fame at the Seaway Mall. The first was a team award for the Womens Softball Championship, and the second was an individual award for his accomplishment of Builder-Athlete for golf, bowling and softball. Bill was predeceased by his parents Mary Ann Townsley and Robert William Wray and sister Wilma (Mac Watson). Also predeceased by Jean Kress. His surviving family members include his brother Jim (Betty) in Listowel, Dick (June) Stratford, sister Betty West in Ottawa, brother Bert (Helen) in Durham, and daughter Shirley Franklin (Allan) in Brampton. Our mother, Elaine Pillsworth arrived in Heaven on January 7, 2005. Family members they both now leave sadly behind are daughters Colleen Fowler (George Furry), Susan and Don Walton, Karen Brauweiler, and Anita Wray (Wayne Sobhani). The hand puppet show will be memories forever for grandchildren David, Kimberley and Michael, Wayne Jr., and Julie, Meliah and Kourtney, Aria and Arielle and great-grandchildren Eric, Michael Jr., Jamie Lee, Crystal, Brittany, Ashley, Jessie, Jordan, Lauren, Kyle, Jacey, Aaron and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a friend and mentor to anyone he met and will be sadly missed by many. A service to honour his memory will be conducted on Thursday October 25, 2007 at 1 o'clock at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland The Royal Canadian Legion will initiate the service with a memorial service to follow. Friends may visit with the family after 12 noon. The Royal Canadian Legion will host a luncheon following the service at Branch 4, 383 Morningstar Avenue, Welland. SAVAGE, John William Highly Respected Member of the Ottawa Police Service 1969-2002 Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1947, he passed away peacefully, October 20, 2007 at the Ottawa General Hospital after a short battle with cancer. WAY, IRENE EVA (ROSSITER) - (1948-2007) Irene Eva (Rossiter) Way, 59, who resided in New Maryland and Alma passed away peacefully at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital on October 19, 2007 after a very courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Moncton on July 10, 1948, the daughter of the late Gordon and Irene (Bernier) Rossiter. She worked in retail and last worked as manager of the Bombay Company store in Fredericton before her retirement. She loved the outdoors and spent a great deal of time fishing and gardening. She also enjoyed doing many crafts, making wreaths and dried flower arrangements which she sold at many craft sales. Irene had a very bubbly personality and you could always count on her for a laugh. She had a great sense of humor which helped her look at the bright side of things. Irene had struggled with cancer for several years. She was the type of person who kept her spirits high and ended up making you feel better rather than you cheering her up. She was a true giving spirit and enjoyed the life she had very much. She especially enjoyed the times she spent with her family and never took them for granted. Her family meant the world to her and she let them know it. She felt very fortunate to have such a support group around her during her hard times. Let's remember Irene for the way she lived her life to the fullest and for her cheerful manner. Instead of shedding tears that she has gone, smile because she lived and she has given us such good memories to cherish forever. She was a very special lady who will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever. "When a loved one becomes a memory, a memory becomes a treasure. Treasure the memories." She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband and best friend, Terry Way; her treasured son, Todd (Shelley) of Saint John; her cherished grandchildren, Matthew and Madeline; her three sisters, Doreen Steeves of Hillsborough, Jean Taylor-Bogle and Carol Nelson (Herb) both of Edgett's Landing; her seven brothers, Malcolm (Ruth) of Alma, John (Bettyanne) of Alma, Hilyard of Alma, Milburn (Brenda) of South Branch, Earl (Monica) of Riverside-Albert, Roy of Moncton and Eric (Marla) of Alma. She will also be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude. Honoring Irene's own wishes there will be no viewing. The family will be meeting with relatives and friends at the Albert County Funeral Home to share memories and reflections on Monday evening from 7 to 9 pm. A Memorial Service to celebrate Irene's life will be held at the St. Stephen's United Church, Alma, on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 2:00 pm with the United Church Minister, Audrey Daley, officiating. Following the service, everyone is invited to join the family for further fellowship and for refreshments at the Alma Activity Center. WASHINGTON, Lois Self-Portrait COLOR Light, Shape, Design, Family, Friends, A love of life speaks of Lois Washington. She was born Lois Sedgwick in Govan, Saskatchewan, one of Francis and Evelyn's seven children. Lois originally worked as a teacher. She took time off from this to raise a family. With her young children in school she attended the University of Calgary and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Later, she moved into furniture sales and interior design. Regardless of her profession, at her core Lois was an artist. She was a founding member of the Centennial Art Gallery and a member of the Alberta Society of Artists. Among the hundreds of places she displayed and sold her art work, you could find it most recently at the Leighton Center and at Elevations in Canmore. Lois was diagnosed with ovarian cancer five years ago. This did not affect her love of life, her desire to connect with friends, or her zeal to create her many works of art. When she realized her fight with cancer was coming to an end, Lois planned one last party - her living wake; complete with a big band, she was surrounded by those she loved. She made one last trip to Saskatchewan for a family reunion, and one last trip to her beloved ocean before passing away peacefully on October 17, 2007 with her husband at her side. Her husband, Ted, her children, Jordan, Megan and Norman, and her acquired daughters, Nikki, Rachel and Kirsten could not have asked for a more courageous, inspirational and loving role-model.
